An awesome game from my childhood that I would fail miserably at.

I'd lose a Zelda race but it would be fun.

I just gotta figure out this framerate recording crap.

I'd lose it harder. I would be that poor sap that gets stuck in the room on level 6.

We would all be that poor sap.

My wife should enter. She's gotten a 70-minute time on the console.

I wonder how fast I could beat Zelda if I were trying...

Was that 70 minutes 100%? I don't know if I could stand to play it without trying to get everything, hahaha.

I'd dig seeing a Zelda race. Because of all my time spent messing around with Zelda Classic a few years ago, I've gotten to know that game and its quirks pretty well.

Otherwise, my suggestions for Little Nemo/Ducktales still stand, as well as Zelda in the space ocean Startropics, perhaps?

It was 100% of the Triforce...

She doesn't even do 100% on casual runs, since some of the items are completely useless (Master Key). She does grind up rupees for the blue ring, but despite initial misgivings, she ended up having little trouble without it.

My wife runs through Zelda 1 a couple of times a year, usually in one sitting. I still have not been able to get her to play through LTTP. She always stalls out around Death Mountain. I'm not even sure she's finished another Zelda game, but Zelda 1 is still her favorite game.

I'm hearing lots of favor for Zelda. Would anyone be up for racing times tomorrow afternoon or evening? If people don't want to do Zelda, I was thinking maybe Pilotwings could make an interesting race. Maybe.

I mean, I would do it. Intend to, in fact, at some point.

ALSO: Another idea for anything that might be long form: Break a game up into segments and award points depending on place like a racing game (since, you know, we're racing and all), and most points at the end wins. An example would be to break up Link to the Past into roughly three or four equally sized segments. It would still favor the player with the most mastery, but it would cut down on time commitment and still give everyone a roughly equal ground to start on each session.

Yeah, I would have to totally rethink my way of playing for a race. Typically I try to dive into Level 8 just as soon as I think I'm able (usually as soon as I get the magic sword) and try to get the magic key early so I don't have to worry about keys in the dungeons. And I've never learned the optimal paths in the dungeons because I always 100% them.

Here are a few tips:
- Start with level 2. There's nothing important in level 1. In fact, the only points of interest in level 1 are the Triforce and heart container.
- You can get through level 2 without spending a single key.
- You can get the white sword before level 5 if you get all of the overworld heart containers. I'm not sure it's optimal, but it will save you a lot of grief, especially in That Room.

The other game my wife beats a couple times a year is The Goonies II, but while it would make a great game for a race, I don't know it well enough to do it myself.

I'm not sure how starting in Level 2 instead of 1 helps except that maybe 2 is actually easier than 1 with the extra heart and the magic boomerang?

I'm pretty sure I always get the white sword before Level 5. I THINK you can get it before finishing level 4, but I'm pretty sure you have to leave the level with the ladder, so that's not speed optimal.

It gets you enough keys for the rest of the game. You can start at 3 instead, but I'm not sure what the advantage would be -- maybe a better path?

I'd love to race Link to the Past.

If I had a computer that could handle recording software.

Or Skype.

Or if I had a microphone.

While I love me some LTTP, I could never do the whole thing in a single sitting. I also don't think I could bring myself to not 100% it, there are just so many neat little collectables.

I HAVE done LTTP in one sitting, a couple of times actually, but it takes a full afternoon at least.

I have to admit, and I may be throwing out all my 'old vidjagame cred' here, I've never legit beaten the original Zelda. That room in Level 6 always ends me. I can beat Zelda II handily (as handily as one can beat Zelda II anyway), and I've pushed to the end of even the most frustrating entries (hi Skyward Sword!) but that one part of the original defeats me.

Perhaps someday I should confront this demon and slay it once and for all.

You could feasibly do a LTTP race to Aganhim.

I'm in favor of a segmented LttP race. A race to the Dark World, and then races to (any) four crystals, and then from there to the end of the game.

God damn I wish I had more time to do this. I guess the good thing about races if you can always redo games with different people, so it's not like I'll "miss" a game if I really want to do. Spring break is coming up, hopefully I'll be able to try one by then.

"that room" isn't that hard in and of itself, but it's one that you will either get through quickly if you are lucky or end up downing a potion on and losing your shield.

Though looking back at Octo's LP I can't imagine trying to do it with the White Sword!

Handling the recording without ass framerate is my only issue right now.
