Just make sure to make a copy, and try out various things on the copies and not the original.

If you can get a sample of the sounds, you might be able to do noise removal as well.

Posting mainly to watch because, y'all just finished a race it seems, and I don't really wanna poke my newbie head in here and go "HAY GAIZ LETS RACE THIS GAME" but at the same time, I am definitely interested and would love to hop on the next one whenever that's going down. Especially because I need to buy a new mouse cause the new puppy ate it, and I'm interested in getting a controller for the first time while I'm out doing that. So just being able to keep tabs on this while also letting everyone know that I do indeed have an interest and an intent to participate is probably a good idea. It'll also keep me from flat-out forgetting about it, he he he.

If you're taking suggestions for games to race, I would love to do Bubble Bobble (NES), but that's just my inner sadist talking.

Well, there's a couple possible things upcoming:

Mega Man Pentathlon Heat 2
Super Mario All-Stars and World Warp Run Heat 2

I still want to run as a possible race
Disney Afternoon Heat 2

Anything I'm missing?

Red is correct I believe, however to elaborate. No one person organizes each of the races. I am hosting and organizing the 2nd Heat of the Mega Man NES Pentathlon. McClain is hosting and organizing the 2nd All-Stars + World Race. And Red Silvers is hosting and organizing the Disney Afternoon 2 Race.

I did do the last All-Stars race, and Brickroad did the last Disney Afternoon one. Joining in is simply a matter of talking to the person hosting the race you want in on and asking about it. If you are looking to race Bubble Bobble, pitch the idea about until someone bites. ^_^ (I won't be in on a Bubble Bobble race - that would be horrible XD)

I dunno about everyone else, but I have a calendar thingy that I am updating with details on the races, who is involved, when they are happening, and when they will be released. It's a Google Calendar you can find here. I think anyone can edit it, I think. It probably wouldn't kill us to be a little more organized. XD

I can keep the calendar up to date if peeps send me info to put on it. ^_^

I did actually beat Bubble Bobble as a kid, but I'm just horrible at it now. Racing it could be fun though, but if I remember correctly, the game doesn't have unlimited continues(though, it does have passwords). If three people keep having to restart the game after dying on stage 20 or so for 3 hours, it would be rather horrible. But I think it's a good game for a timed challenge. 1 hour to get as far as possible?

And more racers are always welcome. Just make sure you can get the recording part to work, and do some tests in advance.

And by the way Narishm, in good way to prepare that save for that one race I'm not sure I should spoil yet. About halfway through actually. Even aiming for a nice looking "000".

I don't think I ever made it past the 30s as a kid. Bubble Bobble just had too many levels for me.

The NES version actually does have unlimited continues as well as passwords. I know this because I still have it on cartridge. Though my goal is to knock my times down under one hour from around 67 mins or so before I start streaming speedrun attempts, lol... I wonder if I should probably not participate in a Bubble Bobble race just because I feel like I'd have an unfair advantage... but then again, SMB1 was a thing, so...

In a very loose definition of the word "organizing."

I think I like the way we did All-Stars race and that would be the format of the next Disney Afternoon heat.

Ugh, I want to but I'm unable to race (or stream) anything for an unknown period of time (at least a month or so). Any chance of a third heat down the line?

I'll try to talk twice as much during the MM race because we all know Destil is going to lose his audio somehow

There is, however if we wait for a third heat I won't be able to release the first two until the third one is finished. I am planning a 'hard' version of this pentathlon though with new challenges. There could easily be several variants of this pentathlon just because of how much content there is.

Well the whole thing shouldn't take more than 2 hours tops. If you rock at Mega Man you should be able to breeze through it I'd say. But we did have one person give up and quit in the first one, and everyone backed out of one of the other challenges. XD

What the hell, why not? If you have room for an extra victim, I'm totally down.

Welcome to the mix! You should probably practice! XD Also you will need the FCEUX Emulator, version 2.2.0 or better. That is so the save-states work properly. Other than that just make sure you can record your game footage (not the audio) and your voice.

To follow this up, make a test video of a moderately long length, such as 2 hours. This will help you with seeing if you have desync.

Everyone has their own recording programs, but I personally use Hypercam, and I can say that I have good success recording at 25 fps, but much higher than that and I start to get crazy video desync (for a perfect example, look at my Sonic 3 race footage).

I would recommend shooting for 30 fps that should be a fairly easy to obtain. It's pretty standard and will prevent a lot of desyncing headaches you might run into later. You can lower a framerate pretty easy, but raising it causes all sorts of problems. Youtube locks at 30fps.

To follow up even more: Contra is a good ROM to use for NES test recording. For one, it has a lenghty demo mode, with a lot of heavy graphics for the NES(that waterfall level). This will increase the file size of the video, but that's a good thing, as I have experienced a lot of errors once video size passes the magical limit of 4gb. If the video is playable all the way through when file size is above 4gb, then you should have nothing to fear.
I had that problem during my first race, but luckily, we finished JUST as my video got corrupted.

I would say just leave it on recording Contra for 3 hours, and do a voice sync at the start and at the end to see if there are any issues with desync.

If the video passes this test, then you're probably good to go, though I once had desync issues on some games(where other games were fine), so do shorter(10-15 minutes or so) tests on each induvidual game being raced as well.

Edit: As for programs, I used Hypercam before, but it's hell to set up right and it's has a lot of desync issues. I switched to OBS myself, which works great with both FCEU and ZSNES(though I had to set it up individually for each program to not get a black recording). It's free and open source and all that good stuff though, and fairly easy to use once set up. Recording at 30fps, and have yet to have any desync issues at all, even when recording for 3-4 hours.
For recording audio, Audacity seems to do a good job for a lot of people, myself included.
