I think I'm a yes for the Castlevania race. I'm not at the point where I can consistently beat the game quickly yet. However, I do plan on beating it daily and improve until the day of the race, so I should at least be able to finish. Perhaps even compete for first place.

Todays practice run was pretty unlucky compared to yesteday. I still died at the spiked crushers because NTSC speed is like superspeed to me(not really, but still 18% faster compared to the PAL version I'm used to).
However, unlucky as I was, I did beat Frankenstein's monster with the whip and Death with dual boomerangs. So even if I didn't keep my holy water this time around, I was still in shape... barely.
Dracula's first form gave me a lot of trouble, as I kept misjudging and he appeared on top of me a lot. Again blaming it on adapting to NTSC speed.

I believe if I do a practice run each day this week, I should be in shape.

Edit: new run. Made it to Dracula without using any continues. Didn't spend too long killing him this time. I'm getting there with some more practice!

Did a CV practice session today and got it down to 1 continue after 4 attempts. I'm totally up for racing this next Thursday.

I'm also down for CV4 too if space permits.

Okay. I did my first run without any continues. One death at the final Dragon Statue in stage 3(fricken medusas), I had to do the mummies without Holy Water.
One death in the first part of stage 4 because I timed a fishman badly. One death at the first bridge area of stage 6, which is the only part of the game I feel is random(either the bats fly into me and cause me to fall, or they leave me alone). And finally, one death on Dracula's second form. He spat in my face, and he's not supposed to do that when I stand close.

All in all, if I can keep these practice runs up and improve even more, I might even beat Brickroad! You hear me? I'm coming for you!

OK, I'm good for Thursday. Guess I'll only be playing Castlevania this week!

I love all the build-up here. I'm just picturing these intense training montages of people whipping candles and slowly trundling up and down stairs.

Started to time my runs now. Bad run today, as I, again, kept getting into a loop of bad timing in the first part of stage 4. But still managed to beat the game in less than 30 minutes. Think I at least can do that pretty reliable now, even if I have a bad run now and then.
So yeah. I'll put up a playlist of 80s training montage songs to be played during tomorrows practice run. Great idea!

What time for the race?

I've beaten the game in 20 minutes with just two lives now. Not saying I could do that again(I'll probably finish 3rd at 40 minutes or so), but I think I'm ready.

can I just say that I'm hype for this race. I'm predicting some major salt when Castlevania does what Castlevania does in a race situation

I think that is a safe prediction. I've been feeling pretty good about my time but then when I was trying to show off in front of some friends on a Wii VC version, it took me two continues to beat Death because the medusa heads right before him kept trolling me with clocks dropping right on my head. He's a bit hard to beat with the cross, much less no usable subweapon at all. Jerks.

Are all the other possible participants planning on doing SCIV as well? If so, I should probably bow out and let someone else take my spot. Did not get a chance to practice that at all.

I got the feeling a ton of us wants to do Castlevania 4, while just a handful have the guts to do the first game.

I'm up for both if there is room.

Racing Plans:

Tomorrow evening, 6pm EST. I'll have Dadaph and Adrian with me, assuming that time works, plus one of my Twitch buddies.

Unfortunately I won't have time to do SCV4 afterwards, but if you guys make it happen I'll be happy to produce it. I'm also happy to produce a second CV1 race if you guys want.

6pm EST is midnight here, and works perfectly for me.
I did a no death run last night, so of course, that has jinxed me and I'll never be able to do that ever again. But I will try!

I'll be up for Super Castlevania IV afterwards as well, if we are doing that.

The CV4 race has been postponed for technical and schedule related reasons. If anyone wants to plan a new date for it, please go ahead! I may or may not be able to participate since I have a con coming up in 2 weeks I have to work on top of other things. For now though, the CV race was a good time, so please look forward to it!

I'm always up for Castlevania 4, though I doubt I'll do much practice, as I like to believe I have the game on muscle memory(that said, I'll probably die horribly).

I live in Norway, but I'm a night person, so anything from 6pm(noon EST) will be fine to me, but I do prefer to hit bed no later than 6am(midnight EST).

Castlevania race went pretty well. We had a short scare with someone's video getting corrupted, but it worked out.

Adrian, please seed that torrent when you get a chance. I wasn't able to download it until this morning.

And like I said, if the rest of you guys who didn't get to race want to run a second heat, I am more than happy to process all the video.

Castlevania and other games of that sort are perfect for races because despite there only being the one path, there's a few different strategies you can use to push yourself ahead. Its also easy to have one thing screw you over and create TENSION & DRAMA.

And as a result, its super fun to watch.

EDIT: Brick! How does it feel to join the elusive "Killed Death with the whip" club? I manged to do that myself once, yet I keep getting my ass kicked by Level 4 for some reason.

I'm surprised no one did the level 1 damage boost skip.

I'm also surprised no one had any trouble with Igor.

Fridaygirl gave the skip a shot at least. Its pretty tough, I can do it 25% of the time, maybe?

I would've been a contender, had the stars aligned. The winner beat my best time by about a minute.

I loved this, these short and sweet races are perfect.

Agreed. I think this format works better than the meandering 2-hour races, and while it's occasionally fun to watch four people bumble through a game, it's more entertaining to watch four skilled players compete for the best time.

Excellent premiere race for Fridaygirl, even if she wound up in last place. I know what that's like, I briefly had the lead in the SMW race for a bit but I quickly fell to second again, and wound up getting trolled by Wendy's Castle and fell to third.

If there's a CVII race I'm down for that.

My best time is around 18 minutes. But Castlevania is rough like that and hard to predict. Some of my practice runs, I finished at 27 minutes, though my bad runs gets more and more rare.
Brickroad lost his subweapon just to have the planets align and beat Death without subweapons. I died in a room I can just breeze through, yet I reached Dracula with less than full health and just barely killed him at my first try.
We finished within a minute of each other, and it all came down to luck, both good and bad.

But needless to say, all the racers this time did really well, just the fact that we all got through the first five levels of the game so evenly made this a pretty exciting run.

Yeah. As mentioned, I tried it. However, I pressed forward before jump and didn't get to jump. I did get the stage 2 skip through the floor. I wasn't even gonna try the stage 4 ceiling skip.

I had a great time everyone!@#$!@# I look forward to more races! Now that I finally have a forum account, let's DO THIS! <3

Thanks! I'll try to redeem myself next time. Maybe we'll do a Guardian Legend race sometime. XD (I'm totally down for that, btw! I promise I'm not less than 3 minutes shy of a WR on that or anything. >.>)

Great race! This is the standard to strive for, at least in terms of the actual race quality. I don't mind longer races so long as they are entertaining (I think the pentathlons tend to hold up, as well as some of our other hour-plus races), but I do appreciated the shorter ones. I know we don't produce a lot of these, but I'd try to make every other one at least be 30-ish minutes.

Welcome to the club, FridayGirl!

I have been planning a mystery score attack race that would be no longer than an hour.
