Lets racing time

I could see if I could get my Super Mario All Stars cartridge hooked up to my HD PVR and record that. I like the idea of being different, like using BC:R for the Bionic Commando race.

In SMB3's case, the differences are relatively minor.

One change I know for sure is a change made in one of the World 4 levels where water was moved to prevent bypassing a water current without a Frog Suit.

I'm tenatively thinking next weekend could be a good time.

Normally lateness is an issue for me, but if it's on a Friday or Saturday evening then I should be able to go till whenever.

So if it's next weekend, sign me up.

The SNES gag didn't work, but I do have the VC version of Mario 3 on the Wii.

I just finished a short test play until I hit a brick wall, and that brick wall was Wendy O' Koopa in World 3. Fucking hula hoops.

So I'm a butt and got this upcoming weekend confused with the weekend after.

Not entirely sure I'll be free now.

Wendy is a pain in the balls. I think the only way I make it past her is to enter with a powerup and eating two hits. Thank god for the rebalance for the U.S. version.

So is this confirmed for this weekend? Are we looking at Friday or Saturday or what?

(after testing my internet connection out during peak congestion hours over the weekend with some 25-man LFR raiding on WoW it was actually pretty playable instead of 'oh god oh god oh god I'm three minutes behind what's happening the laaaaaaaaag' like it has been up till now, so I'm hopeful!)

A Super Mario 3 race? Sounds like fun! I'd be down for some Let's Racing if y'all still need competitors of the competent-but-not-particularly-skilled variety. I wouldn't be able to do Friday night, though.

Wait, you mean there are people who let the boss survive for more than half a minute?

I was flabbergasted when most of the players on that other SMB3 race struggled against the Whomp-Whomps. You just jump on them as soon as they stand up! I have never actually seen them fly before. They look pretty hard if you let them run free.

This weekend is a total no-go for me. I'm going to be down at my uncle's and my brother's most of this week. As things stand, I'm probably out until after I get back from vacation on the 28th.

Don't let that stop you guys though. If you record the footage, I'll get it arranged.

I am SO down if there's an open slot. I don't have a dedicated Mic yet, so if we hit a limit and someone else wants to go, let them before me.

I'm open for joining in some time if any race has an opening(probably not for SMB3 as that seems pretty full...)
Got Camstudio up and running, and same for Skype.

Just wondeing how you usually record the talking... does one person record the Skype conversation? Asking because I have some issues with recording from my own mic for some weird reason, and I don't want to be the one guy causing technical problems...

Well, we typically record all our own audio. That said, I do remember the Goons jabbering about technical issues during their Link to the Past run, and they did mention that one of them was recording the Skype conversation in addition to their own audio, just in case. I'm not entirely sure how that all would work out technically, and it frankly sounds like a nightmarish demand on a system's resources, but it can be done.

I would count on having to record your own stuff though. I like to record video and audio separate. It adds a couple extra steps, but quite frankly I think the results are more than worth it.

Would a bluetooth headset would work well enough for a Let's Play? I know bluetooth isn't quite as instantaneous as a plugged in mic would be but I r not smrt about thing.

Ok, then I'll try to fix my audio issues before joining.
Having some weird trouble with the mic volume going all the way down after recording for a while, but I'll play around a bit, maybe even use a seperate computer to record audio or get a new mic.

It should be fine, but you can always test it out. Try recording yourself playing Mario and say "Jump" every time you jump or something, just to see how in-sync the audio stays.

I hope Dadaph cries "MOD!" every time he falls in a pit or jumps into a fireball.

...and when you ask me what killed me, I'll just cry "MOD!" again.

Since we have so many potential interests, we could possibly do two runs.

Fuck it, just have everyone on TT do head-to-head races and make a bracket

To follow up on this, don't do a short test recording, do a long one. It'll be easier to catch desync in a longer video since it'll get more pronounced.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try and get a recording setup cobbled together in the next couple of days to see if I'm actually technically capable of participating in this Let's Racing shindig thing.

That reminds me of a story.

Years and years ago I had a friend who lived across the street from me who had a Super Nintendo. So after school more often than not he and I would go to his house and play games, especially multiplayer games. Since he owned a SNES and I didn't yet have one he was, of course, much more practiced at these games than I was. I could beat him from time to time but he held a winning records in our competitions by a wide margin

But the game that I could never beat him at was Super Mario Kart. That dude was amazing at the game. It didn't matter what whether we were racing or battling but I could never beat the guy. Eventually I just came to accept that competitive Mario Kart was just something that I wasn't very good at and that if I could just beat the AI opponents that I was doing all I could do.

My friend's dominance at Mario Kart continued unabated over the years until one year he was having his birthday party with a large group of friends and he decided to hold a Super Mario Kart tournament. Everyone would play a heads-up, single-elimination, circuit and the winner would get some sort of door prize whose exact nature I've long ago forgotten. The losers who where eliminated in the early rounds would have to hide their burning shame at their kart racing incompetence and stand at the back of the hot and cramped living room while the real racers continued on in their seats of esteem on the couch in front of the TV.

I didn't exactly go into this contest brimming with confidence.

Much to my surprise I rather handily bested my first opponent and advanced to the next round. The second round came and went and I again advanced. Before I knew it I had knocked off every other competitor and my old friend and I were pitted against each other for the tournament championship.

He beat me without breaking a sweat.

Still, I learned that I had never really been as terrible at Super Mario Kart as all my years of runner-up finishes had led me to think. In fact, I was pretty good! I'd just had the misfortune of being friends with the one guy in my school who was amazing at videogames in general and world-class at Mario Kart in particular.

Just now getting around to watching the MM2 race.

I just watched Umby walk against the wall in the dark section of Quick Man for what felt like an eternity. I kept thinking, "Okay, he's got to know to jump now," but he never did. He just walked and walked. It was sublime.

I haven't even started processing Bionic Commando yet, because I am a lousy slacker.

If there are sixteen people, you could do two worlds each round. First person to get the scepter into the kings hand wins and proceeds to the next round. And unless people really suck, you should still be able to do it all in one night, though it would require some organizing.

Would probably be something interesting for the future.

Would we require fresh loads each time to empty out the inventory, or would save-states be involved? Because my strategy involves using Jugem's Jewel to get past certain auto-scrolling stages, and throwing two of the P-wings I get at the World 8 airships, and maybe 8-1.

Doesn't All-Stars save your inventory?

I abandoned the SM All-stars version for the Virtual Console version. I know it has the suspend saves, but yeah. Just throwing possible wrinkles out there.

Personally I'd rather just do a straight-up run of vanilla SMB3, no tournament shenanigans, no suspend states, just start to finish with a few other Talking Tyrants. I'll probably bow out of this one if it becomes too cumbersome.
