I'll keep my eyes open for a race I'm good for. But this one ain't it
Wasn't there talk of a River City Ransom race?

If you guys ever need an extra person to fill a slot, I am down to race absolutely anything. Especially Sonic or Mega Man.

I also have a few ideas for a possible Genesis/Mega Drive Pentathlon, if anyone would be interested in such a thing.

I've been tossing around the idea of a Sonic 3 race with Shadow Warrior Luke.

Yes, I know Sonic 3 is only half the game but that means a shorter race. It also means that we'd have saves if we needed them (lol what?), and no Knuckles since his path is so dramatically different.

But I haven't emulated Genesis before so who knows.

Genesis games, from the little bit I've tried, don't seem that hard to emulate. They seem generally easier than even SNES.

Actually, I think an asymmetrical Sonic 3 race would be really neat. We could have 4 players using Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic & Tails, with the tougher/easier characters assigned based on player skill as a sort of handicap.

Yeah, the Genesis emulator I found a while back was basically just "download emulator, plug ROM, Sega logo". And it doesn't have a DOS-like interface like ZSNES.

Now, I don't know how recording works...

A Sonic 3 race could only reach its maximum entertainment value if someone was participating that didn't know how to do the one part.

Yes, that part. And now I've ruined it.

I'd be down for Sonic racing though.

I don't know how to do ANY part in ANY Sonic game.

So my internet's back to normal, and if you guys need someone to take 'hilariously awful last place' in a Sonic 3 race over the weekend or whatever I'd be down to lose spectacularly.

I can beat Sonic 2 easily enough, but I have actually never played Sonic 3(only tried the first level). I have a busy schedule these days, but I may be able to start racing again soon.

It's about time we race a Sonic game.

I am able to race Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. I can't consistently beat Sonic 1 or 2.

I guess what I'm saying is I'm up for racing Sonic 3

I guess it's time to figure out recording Genesis then.

In fact, I'll throw next weekend out as a possible ETA for racing.

So, looking at Friday evening, approx 8pm Mountain Time (7 Pacific, 10 Eastern) with the usual late night caveat that I might be slightly later.

Sonic 3, normal game (not Sonic 3 & Knuckles). That is, 6 zones, 12 stages!

Everyone would be starting on a fresh save slot. That way if you game over you can start over at the start of the zone!

I don't know if Tails gets any major shortcuts through the game besides skipping the intro in Angel Island Zone, but I'm thinking for fairness Sonic&Tails default would be the fairest.

Tails has a few big shortcuts that can save minutes if you know the right places to fly. Sonic's shield lets you save a bunch of time against several bosses. Sonic & Tails has all the advantages of both if you have a second controller for airlifting Sonic.

Personally, I don't care about fairness at all. If anything, it would be more interesting to watch if people run different characters.

I'm available all week and weekend, so scheduling won't be an issue for me. If we end up with more than 4 people confirmed (which looks probable at this point), I can sit out so that the more active TT members can participate.

We can always do five people. Or six. Just sayin'. There's nothing to say our typical cap of four is a hard and fast rule. We just decided early on we didn't want to do this.

Put me in as a tentative. I might end up working day time on Friday, but as of now I'm free.

Diggin' the music in your test upload.

Yeah, I would say six is probably the max, based on the way we divide screens, though I would think 4-5 is probably optimal so you have one screen free for promo/times. Also having more than four people trying to talk over each other can get messy in a hurry.

Yeah, but I feel like, with our races at least, people never really have a problem with talking over each other. Even in the pentathlons, where there's 5 people, it never really feels like anyone is struggling to get a word in. Six wouldn't be much worse honestly.

Yeah sorry I read that a while ago on my phone and was like "I'll get to it later when I'm on the computer" and then forgot about it because I am stupid. PLZ FORGIVE ME

That link is the script for processing the Super C race. You should be able to read and edit it in Notepad. It's not very well commented but I'm happy to walk through it with you or answer any questions about it.

I'm kinda not sure how to handle the multiple characters thing. I see where Jasu is coming from, that it might be more interesting somehow.

I was thinking we'd get a decent enough spread by just letting everyone use whoever they want. It'd be imbalanced, but slightly more interesting to watch.

I don't know nuffin about the different playable characters in Sonic, but I think it kind of goes against the spirit of all the other races thus far to have people racing with different setups. The closest we ever came, I think, was the SMB2 race where some people used All-stars and some used NES.

Not saying it can't be done, it would be an experiment, anyway. Just unusual.

That said, 10 EST is a touch on the late side for me, though it is a Friday. I'd be an utter failure in the race anyway, so put me down as a maybe.

(incidentally what's the best genesis emulator, right now? I haven't emulated a genesis game in forever)

I'm for different characters. I know nothing about Sonic 3(and unfortunately, I just can't race this weekend), but different characters with different shortcuts sound a lot like SMB2. When watching SMB2, I rooted for the Luigi-guys, as that is "my" character and I wanted it to be proved he is a better character than Toad.

Sound like both Sonic and Tails have their uses in different areas? Or maybe some of the racers are skilled enough to play with two controllers? Let the race decide the outcome.

I think I too am interested in Sonic 3 times. Put me down as a maybe as well as 10pm EST is a tad late but it's Sonic 3 so it shouldn't take too long.

I gotta admit the SMB2 comparison makes sense.

I would just say that we let Sonic players get past the intro cutscene before everyone starts playing in earnest.

Fusion is my personal favourite, but any of the Gens variants would probably work just as well.

Incidentally, does everyone else already have each other's Skype names? Mine is JasuBakuhatsu.

Just have everyone load up the game and get ot the point where they are in control of their character, pause, and then do the "1, 2, 3, GO!" from there.

Seeing different characters would definitely be more interesting. It's what I liked about the SMB2 race, cuz different people went for different characters on different stages. It introduces some strategy, which I think is cool. Knowing what your character can do to get through X area, and using those strengths is just as important as knowing the quickest route through the stage in general.

My strategy for Sonic 3 is "Use Tails."

I will do this even if it's not allowed.

At this rate I'll be the only Sonic&Tails player in a foxy world. Which is okay!

Would you be willing to process the race, Torgo?
