Got a huge workload this week, but completed coloring the characters and playing around with setting up the header now.
Edit: Figured out the format needed was different. Anyway, this about what I'm aiming for at the moment: Hoping I can finish the full image later today or by tomorrow. Last edited by Dadaph; 06-15-2013 at 12:04 PM. Reason: moved scrooge |

Okay, made a full size 2560x1440 image. It can be used as Youtube header, or you can download and use it as desktop wallpaper or whatever.
As explained by this link in an earlier post, only the middle part will be visible for most people, so that's where the important stuff is. The rest is just bonus to fit with Youtube's format as described earlier in this thread, but tried to make those parts look nice as well. Last edited by Dadaph; 06-15-2013 at 01:48 PM. Oh snap, I should have used a Clash at Demonhead screenshot somewhere. Will probably update the big version later.

Dadaph, that banner is fantastic. Nicely made.
(Also I keep forgetting to mention that your crazy bird artwork is hilarious, so this seems as good a time as any to mention it.) |

Alrighty! The time has come, next weekend (Friday or Saturday) for a Super Metroid Race!
This time around I'm looking for peeps that are fairly well versed in the game and can pull off a PMSR (Poor Man's Speed Run). The rules for this particular race (so far) are just 5 required kills: Kraid, Ridley, Phantoon, Draygon, and Mother Brain. Apart from this no pickups are required and sequence breaking is allowed. The only reason the kills are required is to prevent peeps from glitching into Tourian early. (I believe I recall seeing someone do that...) Anywho next weekend! Super Metroid! So plan out a path, set some time aside, and get to practicing. So far Dadaph is interested in running the race but may have availability issues. Anyone else leave a message and let me know! Also... I challenge thee Brickroad... -throws down gauntlet- (this will not be another Super Mario World XD) |

Nari, what's your best SM time? If you can get it under 1:10 I'll race you.
Also we will have to get Garrison. I don't even know where that dude is these days. (Besides on twitch playing Donkey Kong.) |

So far with my test runs it's been 1:23, but that's with a 50% collection rate, I am currently deleting items from the run to shave off time

I think I usually get 38% or thereabouts.

yeah, I wasn't sure how well I would do against Ridley so I went on a little shopping spree for E-tanks in Brinstar, I'm doing another run right now removing a lot of that extra stuff...

Ridley's not the one you have to worry about. Grab the Screw Attack and practice staying away from his tail.
Phantoon is the real roadblock. If you're playing quickly, you've used two shinesparks to get into the wrecked ship, and probably only have one super missile when you get to his room. It's pretty hectic. |

I typically don't have much trouble with Phantoon, I have the wave beam and a reserve tank by the time I hit his room and take him out pretty easy (most of the time)

this was my last run, just a moment ago
still refining my path, but I made almost no errors on the mockballs or shinesparks, however I did run out of missiles on mother brain and had to go back to the refill station XD Once I lock it down and practice I think I can get that under an hour. However I expect the run to take about a half hour longer under racing conditions, so around 1:30 or so, and I may pad it out with a few more items to make sure I don't die anywhere. (like maybe running the gauntlet before phantoon for that e-tank) |

Dadaph: That's an awesome Banner. Excellent work.
As for the Super Metroid race, I'd LIKE to participate, but I've never really tried to speedrun it before. I think I might just sit this one out. |

That's why I announced this one so far in advance, it's a full week away. That way you can get in some practice time before the big event.

I haven't been able to get in touch with him. I figure one of your guys would have a better shot since he was (or is still maybe?) a Talking Tyrant. The name would be more recognizable than mine.

Wow, with a time like that, I should really do a practice run this week. Just did the game 100% in 2 hours, but never really gone for a run just intended to be as fast as possible before.
I did download a map and sketch out a possible route on it, with an item collection of about 50%, but I think I should reduce the number of missiles I pick up during my practice. I still think I'll be the guy who keeps screwing up mockballing and wall jumps and ends up dying to Ridley. |

Although it takes 4 supers to destroy one of the barriers, it can take 15 or so normals. There are 4 barriers so make sure you roll into that room with at least 65 normals and 15 supers. You need to clear 4 Zebetite barriers and Mother Brain's case, which is immune to everything except missiles (both kinds). In fact it's impossible to harm Mother Brain with anything but missiles until phase 2. If you run out of missiles you have to backtrack all the way back to the recharge room. Quote:
Phantoon tips: Hitting him with a super missile causes him to go to the top of the room and use an almost undodgeable sweeping attack. Shooting him with Charge + Spazer + Ice + Wave causes him to immediately vanish and go back to dropping fire while invisible. Hitting him with Charge + Spazer + Wave (or the Wave Special) makes him flash 3 times giving you more chances to shoot him before he goes back to dropping fire. I use that last option personally. Most of the bosses have a sort of pattern you can lock them into. The Golden Chorizo for example, if you hit him with a Charged Wave + Plasma he'll jump backwards, combine this with the fact that he can't hit you if you stand directly in front of him, and you can pin him in the corner near the door with him constantly jumping the whole fight and he'll never touch you. I go out of my way for a few extra Super Missiles, so that shouldn't be a problem. But it's stuff like this I'll notice in my practice. If I get in trouble at one point, it's because I haven't collected enough missiles.
I usually never have trouble with Phantoon, just spamming him with regular missiles when he gives me the chance, then one Super to finish him off when he turns red enough. Never really tried to speedrun him before though, but he doesn't really take me very long to kill. |

I don't know how much free time I'll get this week to practice my Super Metroiding, but I'll try. Put me down as a maybe for the race, I guess. It'll depend on the time too.
