A fine plan, I'll give it some practice this weekend, might throw my hat in. I'm guessing 3 people will coast through with triple holy waters and the last person will get an unlucky dagger drop or something. I'm thinking that's your point though, you evil mastermind.

I love the idea of a Castlevania race, but I just know I'd be the asshole who would die and lose his Holy Water.

No no, see, the flea man that kills you -- he's the asshole. You're just a blameless victim in the whole mess.

One of Castlevania's many, many hapless victims.

If I get some good practice done in time, maybe. If not, I'm probably out as I have never beaten the game in less than 5 continues, and I always spend forever in stage 5 og 6.
Once I even got stuck on Dracula for 2 hours(I just couldn't handle that first form for whatever reason).
I'm actually not worried about Fleamen, but that bat in 4-1 however, gets me every time.

Call me when you want to race Castlevania IV, that's one of the games I've beaten at least once a year since I was a kid.

The great thing about castlevania is that no matter how good people are at it, some random enemy can drop a dagger and there goes the entire run*.

Wait, no did I say great? I meant the opposite of that.

*well, not the whole run, but at least an entire level

I'm not in any hurry to do the race, so if folks want a couple weeks to grind out some practice I would be totally fine with that.

I would also be fine racing SCV4 at some point too!

Oh hey, a game I can beat reliably. I'd be down. In the meantime I guess any excuse to load up the CV save is as good as any.

*You don't have to pick up the dagger. This is the great secret of Castlevania.

Sometimes the dagger drops from a medusa head while you're in mid air and you don't have a choice.

I guess I need to optimize my run through the game to not put me in that situation?

No, just memorize the drop schedule, and you're golden.

Wait, wait wait. Are you just having fun, or is that actually possible outside of a TAS?

I think there is a trick to it -- like every Nth enemy or something. No way to know what they'll drop, but you can anticipate who will drop something.

This is going off of vague memories of some AGDQ run, though, so grain of salt etc.

I can't say this has ever happened to me. If I pick up a dagger it's because I stupidly jumped towards a candle while whipping it.

I'm getting a bit better. I still need to work on a solid strategy for beating Death without holy water. I seem to screw up and lose it 50% of the time in that level.

Just how good did you end up getting Brickroad, are you going to be blasting though the game in 15 minutes? Need to know just how much practice I'd need not to embarrass myself.

I think he streamed a no continue run live on his stream, while talking and having other people talk to him.

Then he played the "Second Quest", which is just the same levels, but with asshole bats and medusa heads everywhere, and more damage, and died really quick.

Most people would probably say that you are embarrassing yourself by the very act of playing Castlevania on YouTube.

I can finish the game consistently in two lives, but my route isn't necessarily fast. I still haven't gotten the elusive one-life run.

wow, I have to adjust to playing the NTSC version as well. Had to use 2 continues on Stage 2 alone because I misjudged the speed on those spiked crushers. Not boding well.

After that, I reached the final level without any hiccups except dying to that 4-1 bat. Just got a really lucky run, I guess. Triple Holy Water on all the bosses.
I'll keep practicing, but no idea if I can do this consistently enough.

Fridaygirl (who a few of you might know from my Twitch stream chat) expressed interest in the Castlevania race. I gave her a link to this thread and the YouTube channel to make sure she knows what she's getting into.

I think I would like to schedule this one for next Thursday evening. So:

1) Who is a "yes" and who is a "maybe"?

2) Do we want to turn this into a double feature with SCV4?

3) Do we have enough people to run two heats? If so, I'm happy to process both videos.

I'm a maybe for Castlevania. The time is fine, but I need to see if I improve during my practice runs or not. My first run wasn't half bad, but I got lucky, and don't want to risk being the dude who makes this a 3 hour race(even though I promise to admit defeat if everyone else already beats the game).

Edit: yes for Super Castlevania IV if there is room, at least I can beat that game consistently enough.

You guys could always put a hard cap on the CV race time. Either make it no more than an hour, or a certain amount of time after the first dude finishes.

I'm out on this one though. I've never finished CV legit (that one boss always stops me) and have not had time to try and practice it lately, and while I'm better at SCIV I've never actually sat down and made myself play it all the way through.

I second that. 1 hour should be plenty to finish the game for at least one racer. If for some reason nobody has finished within one hour(I mean, it's Castlevania, bad stuff happens), make the race end when the first dude finishes.

I'm down for Thurs, as long as it is after 6 central. I haven't played SCIV in years, though and probably won't have time to practice much by then.

That, or have a mandatory clause that requires finishers to begin racing Final Fantasy immediately.

Hm. I really want in on the IV race, but my skills in the original CV haven't just not gotten any better, they've atrophied. And I don't know for sure yet if the time works. Sooo... Maybe.

I'm more interested in racing SCVIV than CV1.
