I know this isn't that kind of LP, but this is still neat (for the first five minutes.)

FuSoYa - Lunar

It seems unfairly dismissive to just write FuSoYa off as "Tellah II", but, well, if the beard fits...
You know, I had never seen whether or not there was actual Amano art for FuSoYa. So I just checked and it turns out that there is. And it's a little bit terrifying!

This not look like the illustration of someone who's a good guy!

But not too dissimilar from a mop!

He looks like a deranged Dr. Seuss character.

I think he looks more like something out of an angry, grown-up version of Ponyo.

I sort of wonder if that wasn't originally supposed to be art of Zemus or another Lunarian bad guy.

I also forgot that in the other (totally nonexistent) versions of the game he got Regen and Bless. Totally makes him a better character.

And free regen is probably better than anything else he could do in the GBA game outside of boss battles.

Of course keeping his squishy ass alive long enough to make use of either is still an issue.

OH.

No, I mean like maybe he made a design and the character changed in the writing. I don't think he made a mistake, but I'm sure he draws stuff all the time that gets changed in production.

Or even that he just had a slightly darker take on the character than what ended up in the pixels and limited text.

E: Like, who is this dude from the early FFIII art?

In the PSP remake, Bless is just Regen, and it's weak enough, slow enough and has a long enough cast time that there's no reason to use it when you have regular, pokey old Cure right there.

All, other then that fact that Fusoya doesn't have enough MP to waste any on something as grand and theatrical as Cure.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

In FF4 DS, the Big Chocobo on the Big Whale is robotic. That makes it even more terrifying.

I'd heard of that bug but never seen it in action. Too bad it's so tedious to set up.

In conclusion, beards.

In the PSP remake, he literally turns into a puddle while his beard rests beside him.

Which is pretty alarming!

So basically, some or all of FuSoYa is in fact liquid he's coalesced into a body.

I can dig it.

I like to think the artwork is intentional, and that both American and Japanese gamers have a thing for inaccurate art, just in different ways. Americans want inaccurate features, hence the Nintendo Power art, while the Japanese want innacurate poses, hence this drawing.

Wait, what if that ridiculous beard is actually fake? An enormous beard-wig falls to the ground, but the limited SNES hardware just made it look like a beard puddle.

I had some other thoughts on that picture of the different "fainted" poses. Rosa and Rydia both look like they're taking a nap. But Edge looks like he has actually been killed. Even if you do enough damage to FuSoYa to destroy his body his beard will still remain (and protect his head).

I don't know what crazy version of the game that is. In the Link's Awakening I'm familiar with the shop keep is that evil birdphone.

Hypothetical Future Musings:
I love Amano & Terada's (the np artist's) designs. Terada finally got an rpg with his own designs in the hypothetical future: Wizardry Busin.

Square sometimes ignored Amano's own designs (look at bartz/lenna of a hypothetical ffv)

There's a part of me that wants to write a NP-style guide to the leaked FF2j English prototype, complete with awful artwork. The characters names would be the Fighter, the Woman, the Brute, and I don't know what Leon would go by.

You know, in an alternate universe where there is a different FF2. this alternate universe thing is stupid and you should feel stupid
