Phenomenal lp as always, Brick. Speaking as someone who's got a big 'ol soft spot for the game himself, you did it justice from start to finish.

Phantasy Star IV makes a great study in contrast. That game also features great 16-bit fantasy/sci-fi RPG storytelling, with snazzy manga panels even, but the dungeons are terrible. Just one blind passageway after another where you think "I hope I pick the way that leads to treasure and not the exit."
They were originally going to go totally old school with first person dungeon crawling like the first game, and went overhead at kind of the last minute, for what it's worth.

The gifs were very impressive. That Big Bang demonstration is the cherry atop a giant LP sundae, and I could still watch this all day:

During the moon chapters, I was thinking of drawing a picture of Cid and FuSoYa transplanted into Skullgirls, fighting each other with animated beards and nicknamed Cidabella and FiliSoYa. Unfortunately my drawing skills are as rusty as a Model T factory.

I hope you guys bring those mad skillz over to the DW4 thread.
Unlike FF2, I haven't played much of DW4, so your LP of it will simultaneously be more eye opening and less emotionally attaching for me. That is, unless it inspires me to play the game myself, which I keep contemplating every once in a while.

I'm also not proficient enough with the game to tackle it from another angle, like I did with FF1. So I think I'll just step aside and let some other tyrant tackle the Advance, DS, and Complete Collection versions when the time comes.
To be fair, FF2 gives far less room for improvisation than FF1. Even Advance only lets you change how you do the last dungeon. Now as for that horrible fanfic you mentioned, if they ever made a game of that and if it gave you more choices of party members, that might make for an interesting LP...

Not to take anything away from any Tyrant who might want to tackle that monstrosity, but there's a pretty good LP of the fanfic here.

Thanks Brickroad! I appreciate all the time and effort you put into what has to be the definitive LP of my second favorite game of all time.

This was amazing! I've read this thing since the very beginning and finally had to create an account just to say "thank you". You've made many a lunch break that much more enjoyable for me!

Thanks, Brick. Your humor was excellent, as always, but what really had me nodding and grinning was when you talked about how the game blew your mind with things like door switches and being able to see the floor below in the sylph cave. My experience of FFII was of sitting in my friend Katie's back bedroom watching her older brother play it on an aging 13" TV, absolutely riveted for many of the same reasons.

Thanks again for the awesome nostalgia trip!

I don't well understand the inner workings of the boss's AI script, but it goes something like this: Zeromus has about 65,000 HPs, and if he is able to take a turn when his HP total is within a certain window (between 10k and 12k or so, I believe), it gets silently reset to 65k and the battle continues.
Just wanted to add that Super Robot Wars took this ball and ran with it. I used to think this was to add a sense of drama to the battles, having to pace yourself for the moment when the boss' HP is low to unleash all your strongest attacks at once. But "fuck you from the develops" makes a lot of sense to me. At least they give an HP gauge...

Congratulations, Brickroad! You did a phenomenal job with one of my favorite games of all time, very informative, and fun to read throughout. One of the best LP's I've ever read. Congratulations again, good sir.

Btw, this was released recently, if people want to peer into the dark, foundation-crumblin' secrets of FFII:

She and Cecil have only one son, whose name I don't remember but I'm sure it was stupid as hell.
Going by the interlude that links FF IV and After Years in the PSP Complete Collection, Cecil knocks up Rosa in a real hurry, too. In fact, I think Ceodore's age was canonically changed because it otherwise implied that Rosa had bacon in the oven during the events of FF IV. I don't know what happened to the couple after the birth of Ceodore (IMPOTENCE IMPOTENCE IMPOTENCE FROM THE MOOOOOOOON)

Thank you so much for this thread. I don't remember when I started reading--very early on, I think--and somehow I didn't notice that you'd finished until today. Your commitment to quality has shown through, and I'm pleased to see one of my very favorite games ever (and my favorite version thereof) treated so well. I'll be hanging around to see what else you do.

Finally got around to compiling the art dump. Enjoy all the great comics and Photoshops of Kain's scrotum, again and again:

Late to the party, but hey, the Dogs of FF2.

Edit: In case the link didn't make it clear, I didn't draw these, but they're interesting enough to post here.

Aww, look at Cid-Dog and Edge-Dog, they remind me of that Looney Tunes duo. You can totally see them getting into a spinning contest.
