Whenever you feel excitement about FFIV Complete, just load up the Virtual Console and play some The After Years, and feel the excitement melt into a thick slurry of contempt.

Didn't stop me from firing up the ROM on my laptop and downloading Snesoid to my phone, though. :/ Not to mention that I keep FFIVAj in the GBA slot of my DS as a matter of course. |

What's wrong with it?

Friend, we've got seven pages dedicated to what's wrong with it.

I guess I should consider myself lucky. I just have a hankering to play either the GBA or DS one. And I beat the GBA one a couple times, meaning the bitchassly hard DS one might eventually win.

I already bought Final Fantasy II on VC becasue of this LP, when I have a ton of games that I still need to beat.

In my continuing misadventures with the GBA version:
So I beat it over the weekend (emulated; I played some on the cart, remembered why I hate games that run slowly these days, and zoomed through the rest at 300% speed), and then decided to go about unlocking people. So I equipped an alternate-universe endgame party, and then had a braincramp and wandered into the Lunar Ruins instead of the palace. And now I think I'm stuck. Fuuuuuuck..... |

At least the PSP version of TAY will have visual consistency and portability, if nothing else to make the experience more bearable. I'm also expecting difficulty tweaks to make it less sadistic and more playable, considering it's a PSP remake instead of a cellphone game or WiiWare port.

Just wondering: am I alone in thinking "Virus" has the best sound effect of any spell that's ever been given an accompanying sound effect in any work of media?
|
#614
|
|||
|
|||
Nope, but I'm not going to play a game I've beaten five or six times already at normal speed if I can avoid it.

You're in good company. Perhaps the best company.

For years it was my "this program has crashed!" sound effect in Windows.

Not only this, but it was BEST on the SNES. Every other version I've played it sounds less janky and harmful. Especially when you multi-cast it.

I've already beaten the game on half a dozen platforms, hate the graphical style, and didn't enjoy what I played of The After Years at all.

Hands up, how many of you cast (past or present tense) virus all the time just to hear the sound effect when way better spells were/are available?

Not just the sound effect! The graphic is pretty great too.

I need to find this sound file and tell my antivirus software to use it whenever it finds something.

Dude, unless you need healing from slyph or hit an element weakness, there is no 'better spell' IMHO.

Actually, this is true on a technical level too. Virus has the shortest casting time for its damage capacity, and lacks the annoying problems that Quake (the next best contender) has. As long as your target isn't strong against magic in general or poison in particular, you really can't go wrong with Virus.

Bio in every other game is a disappointment after it being so broken in this one. You hear that, Bio? Your mother and I are very disappointed in you!

There's a nice touch that I saw when I watched the intro of FF2. When the airship fleet is flying across the world map, one of the first locations you see is Mount Ordeals, where Cecil's quest for redemption begins for real.

Oh go easy on him. He got a triple-grade promotion for his debut as an elemental spell in VII, and never really got over getting demoted back to status effect only afterward. And besides, he TRIED to live up to his legacy with V and VI. It's just so hard to do that when your competition keeps getting so much better and you've already hit your peak.

I honestly think I overuse Bio in other games out of reverence to how great it was in this one. The cool sound effect it generates is just the icing on the cake.

I definitely use the hell out of Bio in FFVI for purely aesthetic reasons and I am not ashamed to admit it.
