I find the timing of this posting particularly amusing, as I bought the PSP FF4 Complete Collection last week, and just last night reached Tomra and the optional Underworld caves.

(This marks the fourth copy of this game I've purchased, and the sixth version I've played. I love this game so hard.)

Finding an update to this thread is literally the best thing that's happened to me today. And I haven't even had a bad day or anything!

Hmmm... I think I might have repressed the memory of the Toad Lady fights. Thanks for digging that trauma back up, Brickroad.

Doodads? What about Bafomdads?

Part of me has always wanted to make a game where you did nothing but open treasure chests. Unfortunately there isn't much of a game in that idea.

Nonsense! It just needs some careful consideration on how you can make it a consistently interesting experience.

Alternatively, you could just run through one of the bigger dungeons in Skyrim after entering "killall" on the console. That would pretty much emulate what you're after, as long as you're willing to extend your definition of "treasure chest" to include burial urns.

Your game also needs to let you smash pots and cut bushes.

No! No! No! That is not my artistic vision. My vision is nothing but treasure chests!.

Not: urns, boxes, crates, barrels, pots, bushes, bags, armor racks, weapon racks, bookshelves, sacks, coin-purses, hidden compartments, coffins, safes etc.

I think the closest you're gonna get to that is the Great Cave Offensive in Kirby Super Star. And even there, you still have to fight enemies and figure out how to get to some of the chests.

Hmm. Would there be inventory management? Bartering? An Animal Crossing style home decorating system? A time limit? Because I can definitely see being excited to receive an item that lets me open treasure chests faster. I'm just not sure what else would be in that game.

I have no clue. It was just a silly thought that I had.

Loads and loads of gold, potions, enchanted weapons, and mystic armor. There doesn't even have to be a battle system. It could be a screen saver!

Incidentally I love everything about The Great Cave Offensive except the actual act of opening the chests. Obnoxiously long animations that you cannot skip do not make me feel very happy. Or filled with rainbows.

I... I never knew you could cast float outside of battle. I just... chugged a lot of potions because that's how we deal with damage floors where I come from.

The chest game should have a base/lair where all the loot goes. And you can see it all pile up into a huge mountain of loot. And if you wanted, you could sleep on it. And be a dragon.

Scrooge objects that swimming in the loot is not presented as an option.

Or swim in it like Scrooge McDuck. OK... Maybe this idea does have legs.

That's a fascinating explanation of what's going on.

I thought I might watch the video of the dude's speedrun but I quickly got annoyed by the constant pausing and un-pausing in each battle. If that's the sort of thing you have to put up with to get the best time then I am utterly unsuited to ever attempt a speedrun of this game.

Uhg, I'm glad I didn't watch it, then. Sometime speed runs are just silly.

Tool-assisted speed runs of RPGs are inevitably going to be RNG-exploiting malarkey.

I don't know about "full sheen of glory". I only made two small .gifs for this update.

I was gonna make one of a full "Croak, my dears!" cycle, but I figured nobody would want to be subjected to it.

if you managed to capture all six frogs targeting the same player over and over so you ended up unchanged at the end it would be pretty funny.

It's been a while.

I remember when this thread first started. I recently went back to the same beach house that, two years ago, I first played FFIVA between trips to the beach. It's been over a year since my last post here, I think. And finally, after automatically deleting notifications from this thread from my inbox for months, it finally clicked.

This thread is still updating.

I'm reading through everything I missed. Thank you, Brick, for bringing me back to this forum via your inability to update with any sort of speed.

Man I just watched that episode of ponies last night, where Fluttershy makes that face, and was like "wasn't there a dude on TT who used that face?"

When I first started this thread I didn't even know ponies was a thing.

It has been a long, weird ride.

Something I want to point out: I never really realized how awesome Cid was until you revealed it to me. I thought it was because the GBA translation I played removed some of his great lines, but then I replayed it and realized that, while he doesn't have as many one-liners, his overall personality is made more boisterous, which lends him some awesome in its own way. I dunno, maybe I just wasn't paying attention.

The problem with Cid is that he's not really that memorable as playable character when he is in your party. But as an NPC, he's pretty awesome!
