It always annoyed me that Cecil is always trying to protect Rosa by leaving her at home, when he's the one who needs to be protected by her.

I believe Rosa's Aim command does increase the damage she does with arrows. It's based on the hit%. Or am I smoking crack?

Also, Rydia is a great name and unlike virtually every other "clever" interpretation of a common name I wholly support its use.

Ps. I sometimes randomly whistle the sound effect for the Slow spell.

Slow is practically required in the DS version.

RE: !Barehanded white mage reminds me how much I was DOING IT WRONG when I played FFV, and how I should probably give it another shot.

Count me as another who never used slow. Before Gamefaqs I never bothered with status ailments because I didn't have the patience to figure out which worked.

That's because Anna is totally 80's with that headband.

I didn't bother with Slow until the DS version, since it was the one that gave a visible indication that it was doing anything.

And then I realized that Slow was the secret to making the Sealed Cave cease being the worst dungeon ever.

I don't think I used any Black Magic spells besides the 3 elementals and Flare (and possibly Meteor, just to test it out).

Isn't that also kind of pointless, since the Summons in that game replace your entire party and are completely unnecessary except for battles that mandate their use?

There a number of good options, really. I could have just gone with 'A Wandring Minstrel, I', but I liked the opportunity for the interplay between the three characters.

Actually, the trade-offs for summoning in FFX are relatively well balanced early on. They can't heal themselves and Yuna can't heal them, so Aeons will get slowly worn down as you progress through any given area. Later they can learn healing spells, which basically makes them into tanks (especially Bahamut), but until then they're not the Get Out of Battle Free cards they sound like on paper.

Mind you, they're still pretty broken since save points heal them and you can charge up all of their Overdrives before a boss fight and do a brute-force nuking on the enemy, but hey. At least they TRIED to make it more strategic. I actually tend to avoid using Aeons just because of that little potential exploit. That, and I don't like one character holding the entire party up (since of course if you only use Yuna, you'll only ever level up Yuna). Bad things tend to happen when you do that.

Uh... Yeah, that's basically what I was getting at. Giving her Summon doesn't realistically give her things to do other than Cure, because there's no point to using Summon for most random battles. As you point out, it can even be harmful. And I don't think there's a single boss fight in the game that's hard enough to require - or even encourage - their use. Thus, adding Summon to the White Mage archetype realistically changes it little if at all. (See also Garnet in FFIX)

Clearly Tellah doesn't need anyone's help, if he's able to easily shove a man in full plate armor out of his way. It'd be nice if he put that Hulk strength to use against monsters.

You misunderstood that scene. That was Cecil stepping back so an old man wouldn't break himself.

Yet Edward endured two minutes of beating from the man without any lasting injuries. I guess Tellah didn't really get mad until Golbez' name came up.

How could they? There's no integration with mechanics involved. You can't cast those spells in battle. One of those materia is only a key item, and the other doesn't even exist. It's neat, in a way, to see those spells play a such a large role in the plot of a game that they aren't even attainable (much like Alexander in FFIX), but it's not the same as what Brickroad was describing.

None of your other screenshots shows this, because they all hide it with dialogue boxes, but...

See that blasted staircase up there? Ever since I first played this, I always see that as though the Red Wings blew the top floor of the castle clean off, throne room and all.

HP/MP Restored! ...but you're still hungry.

Likewise, Water of Life can replenish HP, but not actual health.

Auto-Hide always annoyed me. IIRC, he does it constantly and without interruptions once it triggers, so even if you want to heal him, he'll show up for a second and hide again before anyone has the chance, making you win the battle with one less party member.

There's a bit of Melmond Titan in Rosa's heritage. It's her great-great grandmother's secret shame.

Oh, there's WaterHags in every public fountain in every city in the world. Yes, even the ones the dancers plunge into and the ones children play in. It's just that WaterHags are far, far too weak to prey on anything stronger than a newborn, so children just slap them around and laugh.

Which should tell you something about how threatening Mr. Ed is.

Are you kidding? Edward spends the rest of the game as a shattered man, too broken to even lift a real weapon in defense of his own life. If he'd been in the party before Tellah beat him into uselessness, you'd see that he used to actually be a legitimate bad-ass.

A legitimate bad-ass who uses his girlfriend as a shield against arrows.
Not that the arrows were any threat to his health, she would simply rather die than see his beautiful face and stylish cape blemished.

That was the intended reference, yeah.
(I actually ran a stats page for Adventurers, back in the day when people were silly enough to compile stats on webcomics.)


Also, the Gilbert & Cullivan shenanigans up-thread are fantastic.

I still have a lot of love for that comic, even though the art isn't the greatest, and the writing at times was pretty obvious.

Just because they got Rosa right doesn't mean they didn't get Rydia wrong.

Great stuff, Brickroad! I'm surprised you're not using the dupe trick. But I guess the beginning is easy enough even without that.

I'm also hearing the music without having to click the links (but I have been clicking the links). And I just heard the Ice-1 sound effect in my head.

With those enemy drops she can summon imp (which is as useless as it sounds), bomb and Zoidberg!

So nostalgic anecdote time:
I played this game when I was in high school. I had a friend, F.B., who was a year older and had a Genesis instead of a SNES. He came over and played through FF2 while I just hung out. Besides video games we also played Dungeons & Dragons. Another player, U.N., was playing as a bard. During one of our sessions he told the DM (in-character) that "I'm gonna hide." F.B. and I both bust out laughing because it reminded us of Edward. Meanwhile, the rest of our D&D group though we were crazy. Ah... Good times.

This thread is making me excited for the FFIV Complete Collection on PSP, and that pisses me off. I don't want to be excited about that! Now if they remake FFV and VI for PSP, hell yeah.
