Not to mention that calling the SNES "way better" than computers of the early 90s would be... just so, so wrong.

Hey, I just had my Tokita interview. It was pretty good! It will be my pleasure to have an intern transcribe it for your reading pleasure.

It's such a vague statement, I don't see what's wrong with it. Unless you're talking about pure technical specifications, in which case I agree, but I'd say the SNES had a "way better" library of games than early 90s computers.

Let alone Wing Commander, TIE Fighter, Panzer General, Mechwarrior 2, etc. The SNES era was the last of pre-3D PC gaming, and pretty much all the big studios were firing on all cylinders (Monkey Island 2, Fate of Atlantis and Day of the Tentacle were all SNES-era games from Lucasarts; Gabriel Knight hit in 1993 for Sierra, and KQ6 was in 1992). |

disappointment
n. 1. The act of disappointing. 2. One that disappoints. 3. Seeing that the last post in the FF2 thread was made by Brickroad, only to discover upon clicking it that it is not a new update. |

It's a strange thing, really, because I'll agree that the early 90s was an amazing time for PC games, but I don't actually want to go back and play any of them now. Something about PC games, which were hugely ambitious, makes them much less approachable than the comparatively simpler games of the SNES. It might also be that most great PC games from that era now have sequels that do the same things, only better, whereas the style of gameplay you got from Super Nintendo games has in many cases died out, meaning that the best examples are still on that system. Either way, if you twisted my arm and asked me which platform had better games from 1990-1996, I'd probably say the PC.
But I don't actually play those games anymore, whereas I dust off my Super Nintendo several times a year at least. Go figure. |

Dude, we totally had kick-ass games in the early 90s for PC! Like King's Quest V! ...Which I ripped mercilessly in an LP. Or how about the original Legend of Kyrandia? ...Which I also gave a beating. Um... we had the best version of DooM! Yeah, let's go with that.

Star Control 2 was released for PC in 1992. I think that just about settles the issue.

yeah, the PC was pretty much the pinnacle of gaming for the early half of the 90s.

Perhaps it would be fair to say that there were a lot of great games in general during the early 90s, regardless of whether or not you you were a console or PC gamer? You might prefer one over the other, depending upon your tastes, but it seems silly to argue about which was better when they were both SO AWESOME.

Yeah. It seems like most people arguing for the SNES didn't or don't play many PC games. Both platforms are allowed to have many classics from the period, and arguing about the technical side is also silly.

As someone who played most of the greatest games on both platforms, I can say without a doubt that there was nothing on the PC that surpassed Super Metroid. There still isn't.

1991 had this Final Fantasy thing that Brickroad was talking about earlier. It also had Civilization! These are both examples of video games that were released in 1991 on different platforms. I think it would be impossible to over- or understate the obvious significance of this fact. |

These kind of things wouldn't happen if Brickroad just gave up on trying to be successful IRL and just focused on his LPs...

Ha! I hope you're kidding because if you're not we're going to have to have some fighting words.
For my part, Super Metroid is one of the purest videogame embodiments of beauty because you can break it six ways from Sunday with crazy speedrunning tricks and it still takes it all so gracefully, like they were natural parts of the world physics all along. That and the atmospheric stuff that I never got to experience because my first run was a hand-holding walkthrough on an emulator. *commits seppuku* |
