I would almost certainly forbid the use of completely useless abilities (although Defend might actually be worse than no support ability).

Until then, feel free to edit your team, but if you do, reply to the thread with your changes. Meanwhile, here's the Mogri-approved guide to counters in Unlimited Doubles. The Mogri-Approved Guide to Counters in Unlimited Doubles Countering offensive strategies Battle Skill: Any source of evasion will prevent Battle Skill from working, unless the user has Concentrate. Maintenance is the only surefire prevention. Math Skill: Minimize your party's Faith (optionally with Talk Skill or Yin-Yang Magic). Reduce the enemy caster's Faith or MA (Battle Skill, Talk Skill, or Yin-Yang Magic). Maximize your M-Ev and absorb Holy. Throw: Evasion, Blade Grasp, and Catch can all prevent Throw. Concentrate will negate evasion. Jump: Blade Grasp is the only way to avoid Jump aside from outspeeding the jumper. Melee: Abandon is countered by Concentrate, and Blade Grasp is countered by Two Swords. The best defense is Escutcheon II combined with Blade Grasp. Hamedo also works if you're lucky enough to be attacked from within your attack range. You can reduce damage against weapon users by removing their weapons. Finally, units wielding knight swords can be dealt with by lowering their Brave. Zodiac: No one is using Zodiac. Lucky you! Draw Out: There is no cure for Draw Out. Countering defensive strategies Abandon and/or Escutcheon II: Concentrate. You can also use Battle Skill to break the appropriate equipment, but it needs to hit. Alternatively, use skills that ignore evasion. Blade Grasp: Lower the opponent's Brave (Talk Skill or Yin-Yang Magic) to lower the proc rate. Use Two Swords to make the second hit pierce Blade Grasp. MP Switch: Lower the opponent's Brave to lower the proc rate. Use multihit attacks, especially Two Swords, since the second attack can't be MP Switched. Chantage: Use status effects, especially Petrify. Steal Accessory. A unit with Ribbon, Chantage, and Maintenance is functionally immune to all of these strategies, so you must resort to killing the Chantage unit last. TECHNICALLY, you can't have two Spell Edges. If you just can't get enough status effects, try Zorlin Shape for Sleep; otherwise, go Koga/Iga Blade.
That team is probably fine with "Save fading life," but I would recommend Concentrate over Attack UP on the Ninja. |

Okay, I'm gonna enter. This is maybe just a prelim team for the sake of getting in, because I don't really have time to sit down and come up with something that really works right now (I need to check if the AI will actually use Golem), so I might change it entirely by the 14th. I fully expect this team to perform abysmally, but it might be fun to watch anyway. Thanks to Torzelbaum for the amusing idea.

I managed to get a Run-like-a-rabbit Monk to cast Golem! But it really doesn't like to, often choosing to do nothing instead. So... I may have to try something else.

You may want to test this, but I'm fairly certain female Monks can wear Ribbon. If you're revising your Monk anyway, that's a good option and frees up Grand Helm for your Knight.

Golem cost 40 MP to cast, so the idea was to allow more recasting. The thing that makes Golem so special is that the AI is kinda dumb about wanting to remove it with basic physical attacks even if it has the means to pierce it (many of the best damage options in this format do). But I'm probably going to drop that idea because it's so hard to get the AI to summon it. Monk was a good choice for something like this, because the high HP would have meant better Golems and Innate Martial Arts makes for better Chakra... one of the few skills that you can heal zombies with. So I may keep the monk, but I need to work on its setup.
I'm also thinking about replacing Alpha Leo's Excalibur with Chaos Blade. The haste and Holy absorb effects are difficult to give up, but the regen would be helpful. Turning other units into zombies might be fun to play around with, but I need to take a look at the other teams and see what it will take to get decent success rates out of the Oracle skillset. Chantage on Bellatrix might be a good idea, too, but I don't know that trusting Alpha Leo to stay alive for very long alone is a good idea, because there are a half a dozen things that can kill him outright. |

A Power Sleeve, perhaps? +2 PA is nothing to sneeze at, especially for a monk, and it's right aroudn the same HP value as the Earth Clothes (only slightly less). Or you could go big on HP with a Rubber costume, which isn't a completely terrible option.

Earth Clothes is good for the Monk because of Strengthen: Earth. It's a tossup whether it's worth sacrificing that in order to take advantage of friendly fire.

Yea, if you think the AI is gonna be using Earth Slash a lot, you're better off keeping it's offensive capability high, rather than trying to allow for healing the Thief. You'd probably be better off changing the Thief's outfit, in which case the same optiions still apply, and for the same reasons. A Thief could probably make some use of Secret Clothes, if you were so inclined to use them. Extra speed, plus some initial invisibility, on a unit that fast? Not a terrible option, especially when you've already got Chantage for longevity.

More announcement time
We are at sixteen participants. This is a good number. You can still sign up. We can run a tournament with seventeen or eighteen, too. If you are planning to enter, please speak up before Wednesday. You don't have to submit your team until Friday, but if no one announces declaration to enter, I'm going to freeze teams on Wednesday instead so that we can get this show on the road. If you have already entered: Plan for a Wednesday freeze on your teams. As with the first tournament, you will be allowed to revise your team upon entering the loser's bracket. Other than that, no changes will be allowed after the freeze. One more thing... The question was raised upthread about how Fight for life AI would work. Here is the answer. "Fight for life" requires an enemy target, just as "Protect allies" requires an allied target. The target for "Fight for life" will be the enemy with the most aggressive AI. In order of priority:
If both enemies have the same AI setting, then the target will be decided randomly at the start of the battle. This will probably become the standard behavior for this setting in future tournaments. Fair warning I have edited my team since the original post. The Ninja now has "Fight for life" AI and Secret Clothes (from "Save fading life" and Black Costume). Once again, if you wish to change your team, please edit the original post and reply to the thread. |

Made some changes: Chaos Blade on Alpha Leo, more defined Battle Skill. Bellatrix was overhauled almost completely and made a little more... thematic, heheh. I'm thinking of swapping the Flame Shield out for an Aegis Shield or dropping the shield entirely for Two Swords, because I'm not sure elemental protection is going to be that useful when everyone who has access to the main elements also has Holy...
