If you want some inspiration, I would make a character who used the Stone Gun + Charge skill if I hadn't already made a team.
It gets stonewalled by Blade Grasp, but so does everything else.

I didn't know Blade Grasp could stop Draw Out or Math Skill.

I'm going to take up that gimmick team offer as someone who knows only the bare minimum about FFT to get through the game. Are WotL classes accepted? Also, can we choose palettes, because my team is 99% a concept team.

This is FFT PSX, so no Onion Knight, Dark Knight, Tynar Rouge, etc.

There is probably an option to choose which palette a unit uses (from the available palettes, e.g. Nanten, Hokuten). I can't guarantee it without re-examining the FFTastic interface.

Well I'm tentatively listing the palettes in my list, if you can change them use those.

Anyway, here we are. Note that it's been ages since I last played FFT, so there may or may not be obvious mistakes. Correct me if there are.

I decided to go with a Disney-esque scrappy young outlaw and wandering monk for my theme. Their hard-won friendship will mean little when they are killed in the first round.

I'd say 'don't underestimate the power of steal heart' but then I remembered almost all the characters in this tournament are women.

Except Batman.

I'd genderswap her, but that would mean losing my Barette and Chantage. Worthwhile tradeoff?

Incidentally, the next tourney should be 1v1, because I have an awesome idea for a Simon Belmont build.

All the women are immune to charm, anyway.

Huh. So I guess I won't genderswap, since she still gets female-exclusive gear and presumably won't try to target immune units (am i off-base on this)

Incidentally, the only reason Baron has Throw Stone is that I actually had a dream about Throw Stone winning a tournament. LOGICAL ABILITY CHOICES

Idea for a future tournament: the winner is the team who loses. In the case of a stalemate (defined as x minutes with no appreciable change in game state) both teams are eliminated.

That's actually really cool. I'd also like to recommend a 4v4 tourney where 3 of each team must be monsters.

Also, I don't suppose I could submit two teams that are equally likely to die early and horribly?

If I ran this, I'd probably make everyone create a team of three and a fourth character that would be given to the other team, so you'd always be playing with your core three plus whoever the opponent gave to you. The question is, how poorly can you synergize with a random death machine?

That would actually be interesting. Brick's original idea led me to the rapid conclusion that two female Calculators with Equip Knife, Nagrarock, and nothing else would be the way to go. Even frogs can outdamage PA*Sp/2 from a Calculator.

Oooh, nice twist. Yeah, that pretty cleanly solves all the problems I envisioned after cooking up the idea.

If I understood anything you guys were talking about, I'd make a team.

It would lose in the first round because I don't know the game, but still!

I don't know what I'm talking about either.

But no, do what I did and come up with a concept, then look at the references in the OP. You'll be able to slap something together.

Just pick classes you think are cool, abilities you think are strong, and equipment that compliments what you want them to do. If you screw anything up, like giving people abilities that don't compliment each other very well, or give them equipment they can't use or wutever, we'll help ya out.

Interesting. Now I'm trying to think of a way to get an AI character to turn itself into a chicken.

Stone Gun (or whatever it's called) should probably be banned in this format. Anyway, when is the doubles tourney actually starting?

This is an amusing idea but I think it needs some rules. For example all characters must be fully equipped unless they have Martial Arts then they have to have bare hands. All abilities much be set and the character must have at least one skill in each of their action abilities. I'm not sure if Mime should be banned or not.

Do you need Item to make Throw Item work on a non-Chemist?

I might eventually have a team.

Stoneshooter makes the user start out petrified, so it might not be doing what you think it does. It's not bad otherwise. Regardless, in a format where throwing Chaos Blades isn't banned, guns certainly aren't ban-worthy.

Yes; Throw Item is useless without Item.

Yes, I know. I was talking about the "try to lose" format.

You can prevent this by giving the user an item that prevents petrification.

I agree with this assessment but it doesn't provide the whole story. A non-Chemist with Item skill can only use items on characters on adjacent squares/tiles. Throw Item allows non-Chemists to use items on characters that are farther away.

He's trying to come up with bad builds for the "try to lose" format. Having a character start out petrified, and having a 100% useless passive skill are great ways to make your characters bad enough to lose.

Oops... I don't think I had refreshed the thread after reading Gerad's post so I didn't know he was talking about the proposed "lose to win"/LTW format. The point about Item would still stand in that format - Item without Throw Item can still do something.

I think Stone Gun should be an item that's banned in the LTW format. Otherwise everybody would equip it.

Item works without Throw Item, yeah, but The point is that Throw Item doesn't do anything unless you have Item. You can still equip it, tho.
