The plot itself is basically summed up as SAVE CRYSTALS ORBS, and much of the game consists of getting a THING to get another THING to get a THING you need to blow off a chunk of a continent/go further into that dungeon you just left/go to an underwater dungeon. For a series that's become all about narrative, I'm sure it's quite a shock to some people when they find out the original Final Fantasy had less of it than Dragon Quest's SAVE PRINCESS, KILL DRAGON story did.

Midgets shaking weapons at monsters sure was a nice change from first person battles, though.
bl.MAGE should go down in history as the first occurrence of magic/magery being awesome in a video game.
The casting animation wasn't really an improvement over "screen flashes, text appears", but consider that no notable RPG in the 8-bit era even tried to depict spellcasting with graphics and you might appreciate that they at least made a step in that direction. When you boil it down to text and math, it's still way more fun to cast NUKE than something with a name like "tiltowait" or "hurtmore".
not to mention that the mage himself is a sublime and iconic piece of minimalist spritework.

This has legs.

I think you definitely need a White Mage (IKA) and a Thief (FUKT). I like the idea of previous characters so I'll basically just second this.

So, Brickroad.

Apparently, FUKT was actually past the worst of it. Some people have done solo THIEF, and while you'd probably want to grind some more levels before LICH, ASTOS actually *was* the worst part.

In the NES version the best possible party is three FIGHTERs and a RedMAGE. And the only reason it's not four FIGHTERs is because they can't cast LIT2 or FAST.

I'm not 100% sure what it is in DoS, but I've played it with a lot of parties and the easiest one, honestly, was four Black Mages. The leader-swapping mechanic is just as good as ever at keeping squishies alive, and the newMP system allows you too pretty much mow everything down with Fira and Thundara. Then to get to the endgame bosses which you can utterly destroy with Haste and the (now no-longer-bugged!) Saber.

In other news, I've tallied the votes (as messy as they were) and decided on a party:

First post coming this weekend!

Shouldn't they be named ZACH, PRCY, BBLT, and IKA? For posterity's sake?

I'll... stop being a nuisance now.

What, I'm five minutes late to vote because I read the thread?? CURSES.

I would have voted FI/FI/BB/BM. I'm so sick of weaksauce parties with TH and WM. Seriously, we had to put up with a thief in the original LP and we just got a master's class on why they suck, but we're still using one? Oh well.

Hey so you should totally take a Red Mage instead of the Black Mage just sayin'. I used that same party (Warrior/Monk/Thief/Red) in Origins and it worked just fine.

Thieves actually got buffed by crazy amounts in the remake. Not only do they function as actual fighters (with a focus on hitting more and dodging over pure manliness), but I believe their promotions can use black magic.

Bro, I have bad news for you.

Ninjas have to be the most inconsistent class in Final Fantasy, though.

I think you should roll your party up randomly, then select names other Talking Time peoples have suggested.

I'm actually interested to hear why you prefer this to Final Fantasy Origins on the Playstation. I've never played Origins myself, but I usually hear it referred to as the best middle ground between the NES version's archaic user-unfriendliness and the easy mode that is Dawn of Souls.

Damn, that solo Thief was a hell of a ride. Good show.

Curious to see how you'll demolish the easier DoS version.

Any chance of a DoS FFII run after this? I've actually soloed that, do it's not only possible, but kinda easy (I'm not very good, you see).

If you do decide to do FFII, you should define "classes" for each party member. It's more interesting that way.

Thanks, Brickroad, for the only April Fool's Joke on the internet that wasn't pointless and stupid. Well... that was pointless and stupid, but in a "funny ha ha" way.

For that alone, I think you deserve to screw the challenge runs and just play straight up Dawn of Souls.

I thought HomestarRunner.com parodying extreme demographic changes with its April Fool's cartoon was pretty amusing, though that may just be due to the site not getting any major updates for five months.

Still, I was happy to see the Thief LP was a joke and the real LP was Dawn of Souls FFI.

You know, I didn't think I could ever be caught on April Fool's ever again. I was all too wrong.

Well played, Brick.
