Yes. And it makes sense: getting to Kraken basically requires a second trip through the dungeon in the opposite direction. After cleaning out the treasure floors, it's worth an additional trip to and from Onrac to come back later and wipe him out with little resistance.

It's also just fun to sequence-break.

The Sunken Shrine has lots of treasures, but as you can see a few of them are duds. I'm not really sure why this game has so much bogus treasure in it. No player, anywhere, has reached this box and been like "Dude! Twenny bucks! Fuckin' A righteous, broseph!" It's just a waste of time and energy.

As is, you're merely turtling to high hell. Not a bad idea though.

Bad, deplorable news everyone! The next update is GIGANTAMUNDO, and there is a nonzero chance I won't be able to get around to typing it up this week! Aaagh!

But never fear -- I come bearing filler. And cool music.

♪♪ Cool Music ♪♪

Since the doing away of the Onion Kids in the DS version of FF3 (which is both a good and a bad thing, depending on a variety of perspectives), FF1 became the only game in the series without a set cast. Even in the newest, prettiest, most spit-shiniest versions of the game you're left with blank slates to fill in.

"But Brickroad! I'm an umimaginative boob who can't think of character names to save my life! What ever am I to do?"

I'm glad you asked that, Sadsack McSissypants. Back in the NES days, if you wanted to get into the game rather than stare blankly at the name input screen you just hammered on the controller until you had four schmoes named AAAA. (No, really, the instruction manual suggested this a way to "quick start" the game.) In Dawn of Souls, though? Bam. Auto-name feature.

Just press Select while pointing at any of your dudes, and the game will automagically cycle through a list of names lovingly pulled from previous/future games in the series. Some of these are thematically appropriate. Some of them are totally off-the-wall. Some are so damn obscure even I don't know who or what they're referencing.

Hilariously, the game only picks its references from FFs 3, 4, 5, 6, and 9. FF2 got left out because it's packed in on the cart sucks. FF7 and FF8 were left out because... well, I guess because they're too stylistically different from FF1 to really count. Does Dawn of Souls predate FF10? I don't even rememeber!

"But Brickroad! What about those two jobs you didn't use?"

Nope, they all get names too. Pretty cool, huh?

That concludes this mini-update. You may now all commence nerding yourself stupid to see who can place the most references. Oh, and don't use the FF Wiki -- that'd be cheating.

WHY IS IT NOT ON THE SOUNDTRACK!?! ... (Or is it?) God, I'm actually grooving to it. If it is on the OST and I have never come across it, I'm going to get very mad at myself...

I was listening to this, thinking to myself, "Didn't one of those demo discs have a cool version of Prelude?" and then the main theme kicked in.

And it was Good.

You can tell that the Square translation team hadn't really finalized the 'canonical' names from Final Fantasies III and V yet, from this. I'd noticed some of the references before, but never really gave them much thought.

It's not on any soundtrack because that's the incidental menu music they composed for that particular demo disc. I actually have said demo disc myself.

Drogan - Final Fantasy V (Bartz' father; should be spelled Dorgan)

Definitely not FFIX. He's apparently the werewolf guy who tries to stop the Fire Crystal from shattering in FFV; you only learn his name much later, by talking to one of the werewolves in Kelb.

Koko - Not sure...
Boco's mate in FFV (should be spelled "Coco," since both of their names are based on "Chocobo").

Quote:
Delila - Sounds damn familiar, probably from Final Fantasy III...
Yes. She's the crazy sewer lady who throws exploding shoes.

Quote:
Stella - I think it's from Final Fantasy IX?
Butz's mother in FFV.

Kuku - Got me.
One of the playable Moogles in FFVI, called Molulu in the Japanese/GBA version. (The Moogle Charm is also Molulu's Charm.)

Lenna and Faris's nursemaid in FFV.

He's actually the dwarf digging the undersea tunnel in FFV.

What's sad is that even though I've played through all of FF 1-9, I only have strong memories of 1, 4 and 6 because I played through them multiple times. Everything else I played through only once.

In regards to Sky Render thinking of Stella from Final Fantasy IX -

I believe he's regarding to the Duck Lady who collected the Stellazio? Lady Stella was her name, IIRC.

You know, I've played a lot of Final Fantasy over the years, and yet I still stand in amazement at Kishi (and Sky Render's) seemingly encyclopedic knowledge of these games.

It's like my old band director used to say, "Whenever you start to think you're top dog there's always someone on the way up who's better than you."
