The revamped floating fortress is definitely my least favorite part of the remakes. The original technological version was a unique and interesting embellishment on an otherwise standard fantasy setting, and felt much more lonely and isolated amidst, as you said, the naked expanse of space.

The lamest thing in the remakes is the way treasures are put into dungeons. If you explore a floor all the way, you shouldn't have to do it again.

Best line in the series sofar! Too bad I'm doing a 4 white mage run... then again they're going mad with holy power themselves XD
2 different mages, 2 different spells, either way they're the one to be the most scared of.
Also, you think THAT shot was good? I've done 19992 to Chaos before (Right after he fully healed and before he killed off my master), but I bet ya someone out there has done better...
Incedentally, my white wizard hit Chaos for 8 the next turn and killed Chaos. Figures.

Since we're reaching the point where this is relevant, what do you think Brickroad's next LP will be? He could go with using the VYUOKITE code I discussed earlier in this thread, or he could go with another FF game. Love your stuff, Brick!

Does any series outside of Etrian Odyssey even try to capture that sensation anymore?
This breaks my heart as well.

Also, nice to see that uppity Tiamat get what was due. Either via instant-death magic or a punch that is not-dissimilar to a meteor impact, as long as it dies in one hit, I am pleased.

Technically, she died in 28 hits, but those all came so fast that it may as well have been one continuous impact.

Fun fact, none of those 28 hits even touched her. She died from sheer awe of BlBelt's hambone skillz.

So far in DoS I've never encountered Warmech despite spending some time trying to get him to show. This is a change from the NES days when I was lucky if he didn't appear to wreck my day. I'm pretty sure adding faster walking speed, save-anywhere features, and a much higher experience limit into the game caused Murphy's Law to go into reverse.

Like Brick said from the start, Dawn of Souls likes you. It won't make you fight Death Machines if you don't want to.

And if it killed you with one, I bet it would be all "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you! Would you like a hug?"

I forget how many times I stacked Temper up on DoS FUKT, but it's physically impossible due to the 9999 damage cap.

According to the FAQs, Chaos has 20000 HP and, with Curaja, which fully restores his HP...yeah.

Basically, I double-stacked the Defender effect (Blink), then cast Haste, then used the Giant's Gloves (Saber), and then when I wasn't chugging Hi-Potions, I was stacking as many Temper buffs on as I could until Curaja came around in the spell rotation. Once that hit, I chugged an Elixir or Megalixir or something, and then let go with everything I had. I was still only dealing about 4000 per round with about 18 hits, so most of those were crits.

So, tl;dr : Chaos has more HP than is capable of being dealt in one shot. He can still be three-shotted though.

In DoS, though, the dungeon is clearly in the regular ol' sky, not way up in space. It's empty and abandoned, but not utterly desolate like the grey expanses it originally consisted of. It's still very otherworldly, but in a fantasy-style way. This is a place that is clearly not part of FF1's world, but neither is it totally divorced from it. The music is hollow and forboding rather than noticeably beepy. The whole package feels much more like the end of the game you're already playing, rather than the dredged-up leftovers of some other game.

These two quotes seem rather odd when they're together. Do you want more fantasy/less sci-fi, or more sci-fi, less fantasy? I shouldn't be saying anything, I guess, since I'm both pro-pillar and pro-space station.

My only defense is that the space station version is like a precursor to the moon and Lunar Subterrane in FFIV - which, as we'll all agree or else, is awesome. Well, it also shows just how far the Lufenians have fallen, so to speak.

I think what Brick meant was that while sci-fi in a fantasy game can be good, there are places where it is appropiate and places where it is not.

A magic castle that tests your characters'... character? Sure.

A castle in the sky with a dragon inside? Erm...

Besides, it's not like the floating fortress is entirely medieval now. Brick didn't show it, but there are a bunch of computers everywhere.

Examining them gets you some flavor text on how the computers are calculating how to defeat Tiamat. Presumably these things started when the Lufenians were still there.

Yeah, those are some damn slow computers.

Really, both FFs work, just in different ways. As Brick said, the DoS version meshes with the rest of the game better, and gives the feeling of desolation caused by Tiamat's attack. Meanwhile, the NES version doesn't mesh, and gives the feeling that the Lefeinish had all this technology and power lightyears (literally) beyond the norm, yet Tiamat still fucked them over, so what chance do you four puny humans have?

Or maybe we need to stop analyzing the aesthetic implications of dungeons from NES RPGs and get laid.

The trick here is a little thing we call "verisimilitude".

Taking magic teleporters to a flying castle where magic orbs compute how to defeat the dragon that has captured the castle? That could totally fit in with the previously established fantasy setting.

Going onto an out-and-out spaceship, not so much.

Not saying it can't be feasibly done, but the former is a much smoother transition than the latter.

Blitzblast, I'm pretty sure that 1 shotting Chaos is possible if I got 8 hp away from it- you just need one more attack buff then I had (But I had tons of them on my master- patience and healing is what you need)

No it's not.

The damage cap is 9999.

Chaos has like 20,000 HP.

It's not possible.
