Default A Tale of Two Scripts: Let's play FF3 US & FF6 RPGOne!

Welcome to the Let’s Play of Final Fantasy III! Wait, we already have one of those? We’d better make it a Final Fantasy VI LP, then.

Let's just get this out of the way: this game has a confusing name. Not in the "Why do they call it ‘Final’ Fantasy when there’s so many of them? hur hur hur" sense, but because its number in the series depends on where you lived when the game was released in 1994. Here in the US, it was the third Final Fantasy to be released, thus “Final Fantasy III.” However, as everyone on this board probably knows already, it was actually the sixth Final Fantasy game; Japan was just keeping half the series for themselves. Or Square might have done it simply to confuse us foreigners, as they are wont to do. (Don’t even get me started on Final Fantasy Adventure.)

Anyway, none of that is vital to know to enjoy the game, or this LP! We’ll simply refer to the game as FF6 to avoid confusion, though the game (and my fourteen years of playing it as FF3) might not always cooperate.

And who’s this “we”? That would be myself and the ever-popular, ever-snarky LPer Sky Render. We’ll take turns presenting chapters of the narrative, each of us focusing on a different aspect of the game – Sky Render will be taking care of the dialogue and story and translation and all that stuff, while I’ll concentrate on showing off the mechanics.

Alright, I think that’s all you really need to know going into the LP. Everything else will be revealed eventually, I’m sure.

EDIT:
Thanks to Sky Render, we now have a table of contents for the LP!

I’m terrible at introductions. Besides, this is Final Fantasy 3/6 we’re talking about here – if you don’t know about it, I have no idea what I could say. So without further ado...

I’ve been playing this game for the past fourteen years or so, and that still gives me the shivers. I have to admit screenshots are kind of bland; it has more strength with the organ sting that accompanies it.

As the words fade, the heroes of the game enter the scene.

...Ok, that doesn’t sound so heroic.

As the credits roll, a sort of gloomy march arranged for beep and pseudo-woodwind plays and we’re treated to a little mode 7 animation of our armored men (and... slave girl? Puppet?) approaching the mining town of Narshe under cover of snowfall.

It’s not very well conveyed in just three screenshots, but this cinematic provides a nicely gloomy opening to the game. The Magitek suits walk with steady pace, the cliffs from which Narshe is carved slowly emerging over the horizon as the soldiers get closer, and there’s a definite inevitability to what’s going to happen next.

And all this in a pre-rendered cinematic lasting less than two minutes, with no jpop, closeups on hair or fuzzy clothes, or explosions.

Ladies first! Our heroes (they must be the heroes! They’re the only characters important enough to be named at this point!) are so gallant.

In that middle shot, while Vicks fire beams one of the Narshe guards, you can see our slave girl’s attack options. The two soldiers only have the three elemental beams and heal force. ?????’s extra attacks are pretty powerful – Confuser and Bio Blast hit everything, TekMissile does three times the damage of the beams, and X-fer is an instant kill – but this provincial little town has no troops powerful enough to withstand a single use of an elemental beam so there’s no need to bother with that other stuff.

We go through the town’s guardians like a Magitek fire beam through butter. Surrounded, ambushed by their attack mammoths, it doesn’t matter. All resistance gets a laser to the face, disappears in a puff of purple dust, and we move on. (The distortion in that third screenshot is the animation that announces you're entering a battle.)

A quick tutorial from the game. Note that last part – I never did for my first playthroughs of this game. I actually first noticed it in the GBA port and thought it had been added for that version, so I was a bit surprised when I noticed it on my practice run for this LP. But anyway, further into the mines!

After Vicks sacrifices his armor’s paintjob battering down a hastily-built gate, the guards sic the big guns on us. Considering we’ve faced the militia, trained wolves, and attack mammoths so far, I can only wonder what horrible beastie we’ll be facing this time. I mean, a whelk is a type of snail, but surely they couldn’t really mean...

Yup, it’s a snail. While the briefing may have talked about its vicious shell-lightning-based counterattacks, it’s still a snail and too slow to avoid a bunch of TekMissiles to the face from ????? and way too slow to return fire. But it’s this Esper thing’s final defense, it’s got to have something up its sleeve!

And it does! With a flash and a pop, it changes to its powered up red form and-

Oh, it fades away. In a slower and much more dramatic (and red) way than most of Narshe’s militia, but still.... Oh well, time to check out this Esper thingummy. Hold on to your hats, this should be impressive!

Let’s be honest: this part is pretty freaky. Vicks and Wedge are just a couple of soldiers, magic power armor or no, and they aren’t trained for this kind of shit. When a light show starts happening and your partner disappears into nothingness, you deserve a little freakout. And this whole time their slave-cum-heavy artillery (who’s technically unconscious, remember) is just staring at the Esper in silence. Brr.

????? catching some magic resonance and glowing, getting struck by lightning, and exploding doesn’t help.

Guess it was just her armor. Still, that looked like a wanzer-level robot. Gundam, almost! Having that explode around you and surviving is pretty impressive, and/or magic. Except... I thought magic was a destructive force?

Locke leaves without another word, his heart presumably in turmoil at being tasked with the protection of his enemy.

Hoo boy. That’s a lot of killer furry elephants. If we still had Terra’s tricked out trotmobile, they wouldn’t be a risk. With just Locke we’re in trouble. I mean, probably. We haven’t actually seen what he can do in battle yet.

Such ominous little fuzzballs!

We take up position and await the enemy. It doesn’t take long before we engage, and we get hit hard.

For reference, the previous most powerful attack we suffered was 12 points to one person. (The whelk’s counterattack would have been plenty powerful, but it’s very avoidable. Heck, I meant to trigger it for the LP but pure muscle memory stopped me.) Not to mention our exosuits gave us free powerful healing. Roughly a third of our max HP to everyone in the party is pretty rough at this point.

Still, none of the enemy groups here last longer than a round or a round and a half, so nothing too exciting happens until we see this:

Oh-ho! Apparently one of these “moogle” fuzzballs has something special about them. I’d guess it’s the one that has twice the max HP of the rest of them. Sure enough, the next time his turn comes up he has a “Dance” command. Let’s try it out!

Our only dance right now is the Dusk “Requium”. Let’s go for it.

Whoa, that looks impressive.

...or not. It chose a target at random and did less damage than our weakest attack. Actually, it does 25% of the enemy’s HP, so it’ll be a bit more impressive when the enemies themselves are more impressive. It did give the wolf the poison-esque Seizure effect, but it didn’t live long enough for us to enjoy it.

Oh well, that was the last attack mammoth unit anyway, let’s go for the beast master at the bottom and get out of here. First, just to save a few G later and since Mog has no need for weapons now that he can dance, we steal his mithril pike and shield.

It’ll be a few hours before we can legitimately buy them ourselves and in the meantime they’re the most powerful equipment we’ve got going for us. Sadly, we can’t do the same to any of the other moogles. But enough of the quartermaster stuff, we’ve got a battle to finish!

Well, I like that dance a bit better. For reference, Terra’s TekMissile attack in her Evangelion I was playing up so much before? That maxed out at a little under 470. We’ve only got a one in sixteen chance of Pois. Frog happening and we can’t control who it hits, but it’s probably our hardest-hitting attack by far right now. Except that we won't actually get to use Mog again for a few hours. Oh well.

With Marshal the Zookeeper out of the way, the last two lobos go down quickly and we’re done.

*boom*

At least Locke is being stealthy, with his giant sliding rock walls and such.

From his reaction, you’d think Locke had never starred in an RPG before. Actually, was amnesia an RPG cliché sixteen years ago?

Fighting pose go!
And out we go! We have a little cash from our fights in the mines, let’s see if we can get some supplies in Narshe.

Guess not. It’s like Potos Village all over again!

There is one place we can go, though.

Most of the stuff here is fairly basic and intuitive, or at least unsurprising. Here’s a few important points they cover, though:

Recovery springs! “Throughout the world” in this case means “three or four total, including this bucket.” But hey, they’re useful when you can find them!

This guy’s practical joke loses a little punch when you talk to him before checking the treasure chest. The fight is just a single lobo, and not much to worry about. Other monsters in boxes are of at least sub-boss strength, however, and some of them are among the hardest enemies in the game. And this is the only warning you ever get before you encounter one! Yay!

Now this is practical advice. Two caveats he doesn’t mention: first, this applies only to physical damage, not magic, which is only important to Terra right at the moment. Second, there’s a lot of weapons that ignore the attack power reduction, if you want to look for them.

This sounds a bit odd, since you can’t actually run from a pincer attack – you’re surrounded with no place to run to. What he’s actually referring to is the fact that sprites have a front side and a back side and getting hit in the backside does extra damage; being surrounded in a pincer attack or running from an enemy shows your rear end to enemies and lets them get in a backstab.

What he doesn’t mention is that the same applies to enemy sprites as well. If you can get a shot at the back side of an enemy, either through getting lucky at the start and surrounding the enemy or by confusing them, you can deal extra damage to them. It’s not enough extra damage over the course of the game to worry yourself about it – not nearly as much as elemental affinities or front/back row shenanigans - but it’s something to keep in mind.

With those lessons out of the way, we can finally leave town.

So it turns out the heroes of our game weren’t the guys with the vaguely Star Wars-esque names and the awesome MagiMechTech MechaMechs. Instead our heroes are Locke the treasurenapper and Terrina the Teenage Witch. For now, at least. We’ll see if things stay that way when Sky Render picks up the LP in Part 2.

This is one I'll be looking forward to reading. I've played a little bit of this game but never quiet enough in my own opinion.

May I recommended this remix of the song. I know this is a very popular piece to remix, but I really like how this one came out.

Part II - To Figaro We Go!

Hello and welcome to the other side of this FF6 LP! While Lucas tackles the famous official "Woolsey" version, I will be tackling the infamous fan-translated "RPGOne" version. You know, that one translation that all the fans of the Ted Woolsey translation hate? The one done by some obviously hateful monster who doesn't deserve to live since he defiled the sacred unwritten law of "thou shalt not diss Ted Woolsey"? What a jerk, am I right?

Wait a minute, that's my alias on the splash screen!

...Oh crap.

Yes, dear users, I confess my guilt. I did willfully and knowingly translate Final Fantasy VI into English from Japanese even though an acceptable and even downright influential translation already existed. That was pretty much in violation of every unspoken rule back then, though pretty commonplace now when even remakes of games that got a release only 2 or 3 years prior get new translations.

(Seriously, what the hell, Squenix?)

Looking back, my translation work on this game wasn't that great. I made a lot of elementary mistakes, my writing style was as dry as the Sahara during a drought, and my key motivation was to learn Japanese (instead of, you know, translating something that people actually wanted to see translated). It does make me smile a bit that the more-faithful-than-Woolsey translation of FF6A reads like my translation if it were given a proper proofread and sprucing up, though.

Oh, and for those who're wondering, here's my final word on Ted Woolsey: I don't hate the guy. He did a huge favor for game translation by bringing the concept of easy readability into the mix (which I ironically ignored when I did my own translation). His impact was undeniable, even if his methods pissed off translation purists, and what he contributed far outweighs the liberties he took with scripts. I'm not a fan of his work, but I do respect what he achieved.

With all that guff out of the way, let's get on with the show!

When we last left our heroes, Terra and Locke, they were merrily on their way to the mysterious Figaro Castle. As you can see, they've managed to get as far as a coniferous forest so far.

And shortly found themselves in a battle in a scorching-hot desert. A desert just south of a frozen mining town. Also, their names have spontaneously changed. The heezey?

Anyway, it turns out that Figaro Castle is a big ol' honkin' castle in the middle of the desert. Interesting choice of building locations.

Apparently Lock is expected here.

Quite the interior. Let's explore a bit, shall we?

HebejebeWHA-!? Engine room!? Mobilize!? Clearly this man is a lunatic and has been put down here for his own safety. Anyone can tell you that castles can't move.

See what I mean? I bet he's hoarding pumpkins down there or something.

The other stairs lead to the dungeon, but this guy won't let us talk to 'em. Boo!

Looks like they don't want us exploring just yet...

Like any good thief, Lock takes a five-finger discount on the item shop guy's stuff.

Though he does at least have the decency to pay for a few miscellaneous tools that he and Tina can't even use. Why would you do that, Lock?

BLASPHEMY! FENIX FOREVER!

"Nah, she's a hooker. Let's have some fun."

Checking out her rack? Classy, your highness. Really classy.

That's right, call the pervert out on his behavior!

Gee you think?

At least he knows he's being a dick.

Well, he's got impressive credentials, at least. Though I don't much care for him flipping me off.

Ha ha, my naming screen has funny letters in it! Take that, original localization team!

"But my friends call me Captain Bellend. I don't get it."

I'm more surprised that you'd want to make his acquaintance.

...Okay, it was disturbing enough when you checked Tina out, but now you're giving Lock a once-over too?

Yeah, I'd get outta there pretty fast too. Edgar's a randy one!

Somehow I'm not reassured.

Oh I think he has something else in mind...

I wonder if Edgar realizes how creepy he is.

Fortunately for him, Tina appears to not grasp inept foreplay.

Your techniques are barely a step above one-liners, Edgar.

...Not an idiot?

Woot!

That does not sound like a good time.

Yeah, I'm always almost giving away state secrets to wandering pretty girls. It's an easy mistake to make.

Good thing, too. That whole "conquer the world" bit makes me a bit leery. At least being allied with them means you'll never be attacked by them, right?

It's so modern that its parapets have fans on top, making them completely useless as battlements!

Oh dear. That has unpleasant connotations.

I guess Edgar has a habit of chest-gazing.

NO I NEVER WOULD HAVE GUESSED

We've got an optimist on our hands here, folks.

Aaaand the creepy factor goes up another notch.

Oho, my Exposition Sense is tingling!

So this would be Edgar's brother, I guess. He seems a bit naive, and appears to enjoy dressing up like Guile from Street Fighter.

Couldn't take the heat, so he got out of the fire. I can respect that.

Bwahahaha! I can't respect that name, though! Man, that looks like someone tried to translate "Matthew" into Japanese and then clumsily translated it back to English!

That's better.

Expect irony later.

He's not just robbing the cradle, he's robbing the CraftMatic Adjustable Bed too!

South Figaro? What's that? Oh well, we'll probably never find out.

So you say.

Quite a bit, yes. Thank goodness video games don't output smell.

What a highly philosophical gang leader!

If you're so great, why are you in prison? Stew on THAT!

Interesting. I'm sure there's no Majick Warriors left, though.

See? Tina's a Magic Warrior, not a Majick Warrior! Huge difference! Really!

Huh. I'm sure there's an interesting story here that we'll hear all about later.

Edgar. Seriously. Stop trying so hard.

Oh boy a diplomat!

"Cefca"? What? How do you pronounce that? "Sefsa"? Huh?

(This one you can blame on my decision to stick to the official Japanese names faithfully. And of course, Kefka is called Cefca in the official literature. Contrariwise and relevantly, other "official" names for various Square items and characters include "fling ship" for airships, and "Blenda" for Brenda in Front Mission. Do I really have to say more than that?)

Ooh, sassy! I bet he swears like a sailor later too.

He's got his soldiers whipped, that's for sure.

Not pictured (because you can't screencap awesome): Kefka laughing like a maniac.

Ooh, he keeps his Pimp Hand ready!

Guess Edgar needs to have a little chat with him, then. But first...

Quite an improvement! I'm so glad I stole Mog's weapon and shield.

This does not bode well for the King of Figaro.

These guys are about as subtle as Stormtroopers.

Uh oh, this doesn't look good for Tina either!

Hooray, Edgar's perverse lust saves the day again!

Was that a threat? I think that was a threat. Maybe Ghastra should stop sending this guy as a diplomat.

What tipped you off? The crazy(-awesome) laugh? The veiled threats? The fact that he's dressed like a clown? Or did you read his bio and discover that his hobby is playing with dolls? (Yes, seriously.)

Damn it, Edgar, can't you keep your thoughts off sex for five minutes?

I guess not. Oh, he said "her room", not "my room". Nevermind!

Don't beat around the bush, Edgar. Everyone knows it's good to be the king.

No, YOU follow ME!

How the HELL did he get ahead of you, Tina?

Now you've gone and done it. You hit his berserk button.

Don't bite her face off, Lock. It's unbecoming.

Gasp! Shock! Revelation! The king of the country that the Empire has a strained relationship with is in fact part of the rebellion!

Oh yeah, that is a problem, isn't it?

Words of wisdom from Lock Cole. How unexpected.

I'm surprised to see Edgar alone in bed here.

It smells like BURNING!

Take a wild guess, Captain Oblivious.

So let me get this straight. The guy who overtly threatened an attack on Figaro less than 12 hours ago has launched an attack on Figaro. With only two soldiers to back him up. And to the shame of all Figaro, it actually worked. Do I really need to say more than that?

Edgar must still be half-asleep, because the answer is obvious.

They're having a barbeque! Vweeheehee! Fire, fire! Heheh!

And Ghastra sent this guy as a diplomat. No wonder half the damn world has fallen.

REALLY ARE YOU SURE I DON'T SEE ANY FIRE

What's this? Does King Pervert have something up his sleeve?

I sense stalling...

Wow, it's like something right out of Indiana Jones!

Yeah! Wait, what?

What... is... going... on...?

Wait, you don't mean...?

HOLY HELL! That old codger wasn't kidding! The castle really CAN move! Straight down, mind you, but still!

Kefka is not amused.

Uh-oh, this is an older version of the patch. That should be Majick Armor...

That does not sound like a good time.

Ouch!

Lock counters by nabbing a Potion. Yeah, that'll show 'em.

Oh dear, forgot about that little tidbit. Most people in this world don't fling fire around at will.

Yeah, they obviously didn't catch on before.

Lock acts as the voice of reason. Man, that's twice now.

Nobody can resist a seductive wink like that!

See?

Oh right, battle! I knew we were forgetting something! It was very nice of those soldiers to wait for them to finish the conversation.

And one round of crossbow bolts to their faces later...

Yep, he swears like a sailor! I am not disappointed.

And so the full truth comes out! They don't just support the Returners, they're members too! That... really isn't surprising.

Jumping to conclusions there, aren't you, Edgar? Also, in case you didn't guess, Phantom Beast = Esper. I was long-winded and literal in this thing, wasn't I?

Oh that's gonna put her in a good mood. Idiot.

Here comes the pitch...
