Now, when I say 'unique' I don't mean 'wow, way to English that objective' (by now the player should be quite comfortable with the uh, language). Most battles involve killing every enemy, a particular enemy, or protecting a guest by killing every enemy. This one requires Ramza to step on two switches. (Of course, killing everybody first helps.) The game is serious when it means that the battle is won by hitting thems switches! If you're into collecting crystals, you'll be able to collect every last one by simply not hitting the second switch. If you're not into crystals (boo!) or trying to speed run this game as a Calculator (cool!) then try and get the Knights to move by reducing them to critical HP levels. This fight is versus the pretty standard Knights, Archers, and Wizards fight, except two of the Knights (the ones on the slightly angular switches) won't move unless brought to critical HP (and maybe if disabled with Don't Act). Take out the Wizards first as always, although they won't be too threatening if you're packing Ninjas. Of course, in FFT things are always less threatening when you have Ninjas on your side. Small note: there's a short monologue by Ramza which tells the player that maybe you should hit those switches, but I figured you already knew there were switches and you might want to hit them. Two updates ago, I gave you the first part of how to affect your stats. This time, let's learn how to game them. Last edited by Eddie; 11-11-2010 at 10:44 AM. |

Stat Growth in Final Fantasy Tactics, Part 2: Constants WARNING #1: The following contains a lot of gameplay behind-the-scenes math stuff. Viewer discretion is advised! WARNING #2: Don’t stress out about learning this stuff! There is absolutely nothing in the original Final Fantasy Tactics that requires abusing anything below. The most difficult encounters in the game can all be beaten with either more levels, or smart skill selection. The PSP “War of the Lions” remake has additional battles, but to my knowledge none of them require building super characters either. You do this for cool points (and boredom), not for practical reasons. I mentioned last time that there was a second part that affected stats, and it too is tied to class. Along with the multipliers that each class applies to your stats, your stats are also affected depending on what class you're in when you gain or lose a level. You'll notice when you gradually gain levels that your HP, MP, PA, MA, and Speed all gradually increase, some faster than others. The multiplier I covered last update is applied to your base, but this base is compiled and changes based on your class as well. The effect of each level is very small, we're talking fractions being added onto a fraction in the case of PA, MA, and Speed. HP and MP are much more obvious of course given that they tend to increase every level. The growth of your 'base' stats is similar (as a general rule of thumb) to the multiplier a class brings. That means that you'll see your PA and HP rise higher as a Knight than you would as a Summoner. It's not always that easy however; MA growth in particular is only raised by one class, and it's not the Wizard! Also unlike multipliers, you want low numbers for constants. This is because in the formula that adds to your stats, the constant divides the end result (thus lower constant = high number). I present a top/bottom 3 like last time: HP Growth Constant 1st: Mime (6) 2nd: Monk (9) 3rd: Knight, Priest, Geomancer, Lancer (10) 3rd Last: Summoner (13) 2nd Last: Calculator (14) Last: Bard, Dancer (20) MP Growth Constant 1st: Summoner (8) 2nd: Wizard (9) 3rd: Priest, Time Mage, Oracle, Calculator (10) 3rd Last: Mediator (18) 2nd Last: Bard, Dancer (20) Last: Mime (30) Physical Attack Growth Constant 1st: Mime (35) 2nd: Knight, Lancer (40) 3rd: Archer, Geomancer, Samurai (45) 3rd Last: Summoner, Calculator (70) 2nd Last: Chemist (75) Last: Bard (80) Magic Attack Growth Constant 1st: Mime (40) 2nd: Every other class. Every. (50) Speed Growth Constant 1st: Ninja (80) 2nd: Thief (90) 3rd: Everyone else (100) Now, as I said near the beginning your base is affected by your class when you gain OR when you lose a level. If you start at level 10 and gain 20 levels as a Knight, and then lose 20 levels as a Knight (possible either via a trap or the Mindflare's Monster Skill ability "Level Blast") you'll have roughly the same stats you has back at level 10 (there will actually be a small decrease in stats, but for the sake of simplicity you'll be back where you started). But what happens if you start at level 10, then gain 20 levels as a Knight... and then level down 20 levels as a Wizard? Knights have a better HP Constant (10 versus 12), PA constant (40 versus 60), but a worse MP Constant (15 versus 9). They have the same MA and Speed constants as a Wizard. This means that your character will (compared to the character you had pre-levelling) have more raw HP and PA than he started with, at the cost of less MP. It's this effect that allows one to build 'super' characters. You level up in classes with strong constant values (Ninja and Mime are generally the best), then level down with a class with weak constant values (Bard and Dancer have the worst in general). For example, imagine taking a character from level 1 to 99 as a Ninja, then taking them back to 1 as a Bard: NINJA vs BARD HP Constant: 12 vs 20 MP Constant: 13 vs 20 PA Constant: 48 vs 80 MA Constant: 50 vs 50 Sp Constant: 80 vs 100 Your basically looking at incredible gains in every stat except MA. MA, as you can see above, can only be increased as a Mime. Some of the special characters have slightly lower MA constants in their base class, but they'll generally increase it quicker by gaining levels as a Mime. Of course, Mime is much harder to use than a Ninja, but if you set it up you can gain levels with them fairly quickly. (As a side note, since Monsters can't change classes, their constants are always stuck. There is no point to deleveling and releveling them.) Now, gaining and losing levels like that is a time consuming process for unneeded gain. If you insist on doing it, wait until you have a unit to throw Stones/punch that is level 99. The Calculator skill Move-Get Jp is a big help, as are Speed boosting skills like Ramza's Yell and Speed Save. On the whole? Completely not worth doing. But for completeness sake, there you go. With the bodies removed from the switches, we can take the spoils and collect our reward: the most broken character in this game. We'll get into the why next update, but let's just say that if you choose to use him, the game is pretty much all downhill from here (as if it hasn't been since Chapter 4 started). I'm still trying to figure out a good way to display a table of sorts for easily comparing two class's growth and multipliers, hopefully something I can throw into a supplemental update. Until then, see you next time! * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * |

Ah, actually, it just occurred to me that Radcliffe actually started out at 74/71 and Ramza at 70/70 -- I flipped Argath/Algus the finger at Mandalia Plains and said we should kill the Corpse Brigade rather than save that stupid little dweeb, so my party members got the +2 permanent boost to Brave. Still, that's the best generic I've ever had. It was pretty satisfying to watch him take down dudes in the Dorter slums in a single hit.
Also, I had forgotten about this particular plot twist. Holy crap! |

The way they just sacrifice the fake Cid always kind of creeped me out. I guess the willingness to exchange human life for various political gains just goes to show what kind of game the nobles and the church are playing. And I suppose Ramza's unwillingness to do so is what makes him so different.

I just get to this point and wonder who the heck Grevados is.
Edit: Now that I look into it all these years later, I guess "Grevados" is just a mistransliteration of "Glabados," meaning he's just a generic follower of the church. So that clears that up. |

Also, I realize there weren't really any direct gains from wasting this one guy, but I still felt his death encapsulates the general disregard the church and the nobles have for human life. Interestingly, the way Delita sacrifices this poor chump isn't too dissimilar from how Zalbag and/or Algus sacrifice Teta back in chapter one. Also, also, seeing these cute, little sprites butcher each other always kind of weirds me out. |

Welcome back! With Larg and Goltana dead, what horrors could lie at Zarghidas Trade City? It's a good thing we've got "Thunder God Cid" on our side, I expect the battle at Zarghidas to be nasty. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * (Scene: Ramza makes through the slums of Zarghidas, trying to keep a low profile on Ramza: Alright, I'll buy it. Flower Girl: In a place like this...Not a lot of people buy flowers around here. Flower Girl: Oh, I'm sorry. Excuse me for babbling. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Well, a welcome break from battle. Buying the flower from that mysterious girl is important if you want to unlock a new battle and gain a new 'secret' character. It's only a gil, and the rewards outside of the new character are totally worth it, as we'll see. Before we continue on this merry sidequest, we get a few new bar jobs in. The ones that are left are pretty much 'seasonal' ones that only show up during a certain month of the year. I'll try and track them down when I can, the Treasure and Explored Land pages are in need of an update. Our next stop: Goug Machine City! |

(Scene: Mustadio's father Besrodio has unearthed a new contraption. The last one turned into a robot and KO'd Mustadio, foreshadowing the day when the machines conquer their makers. What fiendish purpose does this new device have in store for humanity?) (Treasure)
Besrodio: Holy stone...... indeed. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I opened this area up a number of battles ago, but it isn't until you open up the previous cutscene that you can do anything with the area. With the hunt for the Cancer Zodiac Stone (that was the symbol in the previous cut scene) on, preparations are in order! On this map are a number of rare items that can only be found with the Chemist's Move-Find Item. You'll want to place it on a unit with a low Brave. Jessica here fits the bill with her 23; the lower the better. There are four items on this map you can collect: 1) Nagarock/Elixir: The rare item is the Nagrarock, it's a very weak sword (we're talking 1 WP, compared to 4 WP for the most basic sword, the Broad Sword) that has a 25% chance of turning your target into a Frog. While that's cool, the Nagarock can be poached from Ochu's, which are fairly common. Elixirs are generally more useful, so it's not too big of a concern to 'miss' the rare item here. 2) Sasuke Knife/Elixir: The Sasuke Knife is the third strongest Ninja Sword, it's biggest advantage over other Ninja Swords being that it has a slightly higher Weapon Guard evade (15%) over your typical Ninja Sword (typically 5%). This isn't critical to get, but this is the only place in the game to naturally get one, so you completists out there will want to pick this up. 3&4) Javelin and Escutcheon: THESE are what you came for. Now, you might ask, "why would I want to get the most basic spear and shield?" The answer is that these aren't the most basic spear and shield. Despite sharing a name with them, these items (sometimes refered to as "Javelin II" and "Escutcheon II") are extremely powerful. The Javelin II has a Weapon Power of 30(!) and the Escutcheon has a Physical Evade of 75% and a Magical Evade of 50%. For comparison, there is only one stronger weapon than the Javelin II, and you can't get it until the game is more or less over. The third strongest weapon has a WP of 24, and it too is a rare item (and also only found before the end of the game). The Escutcheon II's closest rival is 50% P.Ev and 25% M.Ev (albeit with a bonus property) so it's basically THE shield in the game. To get these items you'll want to bring a character with an extremely low Brave. As mentioned before, the chance to get a rare item is (100% - Brave). Even with a Brave of 23, there is only a roughly 45% chance you'll get the Javelin II AND the Escutcheon II AND the Sasuke Knife. Even going to a Brave of 22 would improve my chances by 2%! But I'm confident that Jessica has an eye for the unique. As a note, you can't have a non-Ramza character go any lower than 6 Brave (since the character would then leave the party permanently), and you almost certainly don't want Ramza being the party coward. Your Move-Find Item character also needs to have a Jump of 4. This is critical! Being a Monk, Thief, Lancer, or Ninja will fulfill this requirement, but an accessory that boosts Jump by 1 point (like Germinas Boots) can let any other class do it. I made Jessica a Geomancer temporarily for this battle because it offered a nice compromise between HP (so she can take hits) and MA (so she can still do decent damage with her Math Skill). Jade Armlets should be equipped, to stop potential Petrification, or Barettes and Cauchushas (female only ribbons) if you'd rather use them over a Flash Hat. Blade Grasp will help against many of the attacks (although not the ones from the most powerful enemy on the field), as will Auto Potion. Evasion is a decent substitute if you can't get either. I would highly recommend bringing two units who can revive KO'd units too, because there will be a lot of them. Finally, you need to bring a monster unit that can be used as a stepping stone. Particular groups of monsters (Behemoths, Dragons, Malboros, and I believe Hydras) can be used as an effective 3 height 'platform.' It's rarely useful, but to get all the special items on this map would otherwise require a Jump of 7, impossible while using Move-find Item over a Jump or Teleport skill. If you haven't recruited a monster, don't worry; Worker 8 has the same property. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * (Scene: The rumours Ramza overheard hinted at a great power coming from the island. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * (Note: the music for this stage is the same run during the Melidoul fight.) After all the talk earlier about acquiring awesome hidden weapons and stuff, I want to make it clear that the game makes you earn your spoils. This fight is one of the most difficult in the game. For starters, Worker 7's level is fixed at level 66, which is approximately 30 levels above what I am (and probably higher than your levels as well). It makes his attacks exteremely powerful, enough so that he'll be effectively one-shotting any of my characters each turn. Coupled with an attack with great range (see above screenshots) means that the ability to revive characters is crucial. Like your own Worker 8, Worker 7 has an effective Faith of 0, making him immune to most magic. Additonally, it seems that most attacks that use MA in their calculations (such as a unit hitting with a Rod or Malak's Untruth skill) don't work either. I don't have a full list, but the bottom line is that you'll have to use physical attacks to hurt him. Of course, Worker 8 isn't really the one you want to be focusing on, as killing him ends the fight and denies you the treasure. While his speed is somewhat high due to his high level, he can only kill one unit a turn. The Cocatoris and Hyudras are not to be trifled with either; they'll match your level, and each of them have extremely strong attacks. The Cocatoris has a decent ranged attack in Feather Bomb, and a strong (100+ damage) Scratch Up attack. Their Beak attack has ~60-70% chance of Add: Petrify (!) but you brought Jade Armlets like I did, right? The Hyudras will hit for over 100 damage as well, and their bite is such that they can sometimes catch multiple units (they can hit up to three units that they are next to). Luckily they're not particularly fast, but you should try and makes sure to either have units standing directly next to each other, or spread out. Diagonally next to each other is asking to get chomped. And of course, all these monsters fly, making positioning difficult. Okay, Calculator skills + Holy is almost cheating, but this is not a battle you want to mess around in. Worker 8 will of course be immune. You ideally want to kill the Hyudras after they fly off their platforms so you can avoid waiting for them to crystallize, but killing them should always be a larger priority than letting them tear through your ranks. With the Hyudras and Cocatoris's taken out, the fight is a formality, assuming you've got sufficient ways of reviving someone every turn. |

When you're prepared to try and get one of the rare items, move your monster (in this case it was the Dark Behemoth I brought) next to one of the empty poles those Hyudras were on. The Javelin II and Escutcheon II are on top. Of course, the game won't outright tell you if you've grabbed the rare Javelin/Escutcheon or not, but you can tell by looking at the picture. The Javelin II is grey (the regular Javelin is blue and yellow) and the Escutcheon II is golden (the regular one is brown with silver trim). This is basically what you're looking for: Incidentally, these ultimate 'spear and shield' items are likely a reference to a famous Chinese parable: I've seen it pop up here and there in video games, most notably in the Phoenix Wright series where it was used toAn armorer of Chu boldly claims to make the best spears and shields. highlight the origin of a 'contradiction' or some legal crap like that. Of course, in Final Fantasy Tactics, such a contradiction does not exist! The unit wielding the shield would take (Speed of unit Throwing the Javelin II * 30) damage 25% of the time, assuming no other evasion modifiers are given to the Escutcheon II user. Of course, why you would throw away an amazing weapon is beyond me. I think the remaining screenshots work best alone, with a few notes: 1) I miss getting the Nagarock inside the cave, but as mentioned above it's not really that good anyway. 2) Like Worker 8, all of Worker 7's attacks deal a moderate amount of damage to himself. 3) Worker 7, when reduced to 0 hit points, will revive a single time at 1 HP. Enjoy! |

Reis Reis is a pretty unique character in this game, but is unfortunately competing for spots against her beau Beowulf and Orlandu. Her base class is a bit weird; it prevents her from wearing any non-female equipment, but she does get a sizable HP bonus to compensate. She is great for recruiting monsters due to her innate Train ability, although her Two Sword innate is wasted without pairing Equip Sword or Martial Arts on her. She also gets a big Ninja-like Speed multiplier, which is nice. Her new skills are a mixed bag. Dragon Tame is awesome if you're looking to recruit certain monsters (it has a 100% success rate against Dragons and Hydras), but her other skills are too situational to be of much use. If you love Hydras however, she can turn any of them into powerhouses quickly (and Tiamats are pretty awesome on their own). Since her breath (Bracelet) attacks are tied to MA, making Reis a Wizard is an excellent idea. I believe that the War of the Lions PSP remake adds a bunch of smaller ones. For example, there is (to my knowledge) a fight between Beowulf, Reis, and the dude who was responsible for turning Reis into a Dragon (such a fight does not exist in the original game)
There are (to my knowledge) a subquests for Agrias as well as a new fight against Algus (who is a little undead-er than last time). They seem to contain a lot of rare equipment that make up for the fact that you can't steal from Elmdor. - Eddie |
