Side note before we begin: The game keeps switching back and forth on the King and Queen's names. It's certainly one
of those translation things, since the problem is that they sometimes use an "L" and sometimes an "R" (the profile for
the late king uses both on the same screen!). Any preference on how to refer to them Talking Time? I used Ruveria
(not Luveria like the last cutscene did) and Omdoria (not Omdolia) before, and I really don't want to confuse you guys!

Anyway...

Ramza cashes in his Bard JP to grab Move +3, Life Song and Battle Song. I believe these are the only skills I'll need for
later. I also grab Auto Potion to finally give Ramza a Reaction ability (but don't worry, we won't be using it for any
cheese).

We turn Ramza into a Priest, but I neglected to grab an extra set of mage-y equipment for him (41 MP won't do!), but
the mage equipment is past the location of our next battle, in Zaland Fort City! What to do?

Walk on by of course! This particular battle isn't triggered (like most) until you've stopped on top of it. This means
you're free to level up on a map other than Barius Valley if you desire for the upcoming battle.

I can't take credit for that neat trick tho; thank the goons at the Something Awful Let's Play Final Fantasy Tactics!
thread for that one. The thread's author, Captain Capitalism, is a few battles ahead of me, so you can go (hilariously)
spoil the next few battles, if that's your thang.

That's better!

I also want to point out that you can purchase Rubber Shoes (at any town at this point), which negate Don't Move and
Lightning. The next battle has a heavy amount of people who use Lightning attacks or weapons, so these guys can
make one (or more) of your units more or less immune. It's pretty cheesy, so I won't be doing it (plus I don't really
want to spend the money since I'm cheap).

Let's go!

Dealing with Gafgarion

Our former boss is going to be focused on one thing: hitting Ramza with Night Sword. As an attack that both deals
moderate damage and moderately heals, it's not enough that Ramza out damages Gafgarion's healing, he must also
ensure that he has some way of preventing the incoming damage (or healing through it) that won't cause him to fall
behind. Here's some basic information about Gafgarion, as it pertains to the one you're fighting here:
  • Gafgarion has upgraded his equipment here from the last battle. His HP is now higher, and critical status won't
remove him this time; you've got to bring him to zero HP.
  • He is immune to Petrify, Berserk, and Charm. You also can't invite him with a Mediator (but you probably weren't
    trying to anyway).
  • Night Sword is a PHYSICAL effect; This means Protect and/or Defense UP will help negate the damage (and
subsequently, the healing). It deals PA * WP worth of damage, modified by Zodiac Compatability. His Ancient
Sword has an attack power of 9, and his PA will be at or around 6, meaning you have to deal with approximately
    54 damage/healing a turn.
  • Gafgarion's sign is Virgo. He will deal (and take) more damage if Ramza is either a Capricorn or a Taurus. He will
    deal (and receive) less damage if Ramza is a Sagittarius or a Gemini. Pisces is the worst compatibility available;
Gafgarion will deal (and recieve) 50% less damage!
  • Night Sword still requires Gafgarion to be using a sword to function; stealing his Ancient Sword or breaking it will
prevent him from using it. He will still be able to punch you from moderate damage, but it will prevent the healing.
  • Gafgarion seems to focus on Ramza, even when there are juicier targets available.
  • Certain attacks (such as JUMP) seem to be unable to target the side Gafgarion is on until the gate is opened.
Attacks like Earth Slash can still reach (I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you cannot aim an attack over the wall).
  • If defeated, Gafgarion will crystallize immediately. You cannot learn any of his Dark Knight skills, and he's unlikely
to have any cheap, useful skills that you don't have already.

The switch on the lower level opens the gate, allowing the rest of your party to join in on the other side. They're likely
to have their hands full with the units they're facing, so it's more likely you'll figure out a way to deal with Gafgarion.
The easiest one is of course, to teleport away.

The Bard "Fly" ability will work here as well. A Black Chocobo can fly to the other side and have Ramza jump on it, but
that method is clearly the most akward method.

Dealing with the Others

Your other four members are going to be outnumbered, but unlike Golgorand Execution Site, they're bunched up more,
making them juicier targets area attacks. The biggest threat is of course, the Summoner. The rest of the enemy units
cannot (at least, without some random skill distribution) hit multiple targets, so using your own to whittle their numbers
down is a smart idea.

One of the first things you can do to give yourself an edge on these units is by positioning your initial units in a way
that best prevents the enemy from ganging up on one of your units. Low HP units (such as Summoners) should be
places at the front of the Unit Selection screen, towards the left. This won't prevent the archers from targeting them,
but at least they'll be forced to move in closer to your own units. High HP units should be placed in the back row,
towards the right, as an enemy Knight will come in from that side when the battle begins.

I get lucky here and hit the Summoner with the bonus effect of a Geomancy effect, turning him into stone before he
can threaten my units. If you can't remove him quickly, make sure to spread out to minimize the whupping you'll get
from whatever he summons. Take the Archers out before the Knights; their bows can randomly nail you with a Bolt
effect after dealing damage.

Barring that, it's very easy to cheese this entire group of enemies: they're all using weapons that have a Lightning
effect! I mentioned before that "Rubber Shoes" are a somewhat cheesy accessory for this particular fight. The
Summoner also seems to favor casting Ramuh as well, making it double awesome. The Knights will still be able to break
your equipment, but if you're having difficulty with this battle I'm sure that will be a small price for you to pay.

Let's slunk into the shadows for our next class!
Ninja

Everybody loves Ninjas. Unlike their less popular Samurai brothers, Ninjas are masters of stealth! Surprise! Deadly! Well,
some of these apply to FFT Ninjas...

I sometimes wonder what they were thinking when they designed the Ninja. Their class skill is pretty basic, allowing you
to throw pretty much anything at an enemy, from a shruikens to books. No assassination techniques, just throwing.
Well, I guess it's called "Throw" so it's at least accurate. Their reaction abilities are kind of middling (not bad, just out-
classed in most situations, although Abandon is actually pretty good if used properly), and their move ability is a
stinker too.

But they've got Two Swords, an ability that lets the user equip a weapon in each hand, and for that Ninjas are beloved
by all FFT players.

Well, okay there are other reasons too. Ninja's have ridiculous movement and are the fastest class in the game. They
have a huge PA bonus, equal to that of a Knight or Lancer. Mobile + fast + big damage + two weapons at once (innately
even!) = good math.

But really, you're here in this class for Two Swords. It doesn't matter if the Samurai's "Two Hands" ability is usually
equal or better, you want to hold two swords at once dammit. It doesn't have to be two Swords of course; you could
have a magic user dual-wield two Wizard Rods to sneak in another +2 MA if you wanted (I would recommend the
Wizard's Magic AttackUp instead, but sometimes style trumps functionality). The real gem of this ability is giving it to a
class like a Knight: there is very little more awesome than dual-wielding two Knight Swords.

Prerequisite: Lv. 3 Archer, Lv. 4 Thief, Lv. 2 Geomancer
Weapons: Knife, Ninja Sword, Flail
Helmet: Hat
Armor: Clothes

Move: 4
Jump: 5
Physical Evasion Rate: 30%
Innate Support: Two Swords

Abilities to get: Shuriken, Ball, Two Swords

Class Skill: Throw
Shuriken: Allows to you throw shuriken.
Range: User's move value. Effect: 1. CT: Now. JP Cost: 50
(Cheap, and an effective, if weak, ranged attack. Notice the range: Increase your unit's move to increase it. To
increase the damage Throw does, increase the unit's speed.)

Ball: Allows you to throw a Ball.
Range: User's move value. Effect: 1. CT: Now. JP Cost: 70
(Balls come in three elements: Fire, Water, and Lightning. These are usually a bit stronger than a Shruiken, and are
great if you can exploit a weakness.)

Knife, Sword, Hammer, Katana, Ninja Sword, Spear, Stick, Knight Sword, or Dictionary
: Allows you to throw (insert weapon).
Range: User's move value. Effect: 1. CT: Now. JP Cost: 100 each
(I'm rolling nine skills into one entry here because there seriously isn't enough about the Throw mechanic to talk about
that wasn't mentioned under "Shuriken." Well, here's one: Throw is not affected by the Geomancer's "Attack UP.")

Axe: Allows you to throw an axe.
Range: User's move value. Effect: 1. CT: Now. JP Cost: 120
(Axe is the lone wolf, costing 120 JP to learn instead of it's brothers. I don't know why, I saw Mel Gibson throw one
once and I don't think he was a Ninja. One last obvious "Throw" fact: aside from speed, the weapon's attack power is
the other variable used, thus stronger weapon = more damage.)

Reaction Abilities:
Sunken State: Hide by become invisible (Add: Invisible; Trigger: HP damage).
JP Cost: 900
(A neat Reaction, but Invisible isn't that great a status buff, especially considering what could be in here.)

Abandon: Evade % rises and it becomes easier to dodge attacks.
JP Cost: 400.
(Abandon is a weird reaction ability, in that it's not really a reaction ability. Using Abandon essentially doubles your
evasion rates, all the time. This means with the right equipment, Abandon can be a very powerful ability. Use with an
Aegis Shield for fun!)

Support Ability
:
Two Swords: Use a weapon in each hand even if not a Ninja.
JP Cost: 900
(Their claim to fame. Not much to say here, except that really, if we're being honest, you'll find the Samurai's Two
Hands more effective most of the time. You want to use Two Swords pretty much exclusively with Knight Swords for
their passive buffs. Dual Rune Blades can be great in the right build due to the MA +2 bonus from each. Of course,
both Rune Blades and Knight Swords are still a bit away...)

Move Ability
:
Move in Water: Move or stop on water.
JP Cost: 420
(Treat water like it was any ol' terrain! Yeah. There are way too many abilities dedicated to water and moving in or on
it.)

I hope I'm not making Junk too cool looking in this battle, what with his "Petrify"ing two units and all. Petrified units
don't drop crystals of course, so Sissie uses her gimped Punch Art skill to revive these goons, so I can properly cut
them down.

This is yet another awkward transition into some further discussions about crystals!

More than you ever really wanted to know about Crystals

It's pretty easy to understand that units gain abilities based on what the crystallized unit knew, but there's some
random chance involved in determining which skills are actually passed on. The game is actually set up to always
generate a crystal that can teach abilities, but a number of factors stand in the way:

1) The class that gets the crystal must have the EXACT same class/job on their list of available classes.

This is a bit of a weird one, but it's like this: An enemy Chemist can drop a crystal that all of YOUR units that have
access to Chemist (i.e. non-monster). This is usually pretty simple, and is also why you can't learn 'Choco Cure' from a
Chocobo with a regular unit, since they don't have access to the "Chocobo" class (if you want to look at it that way).
Males are also unable to learn Dancer skills, and neither can females learn Bard ones.

This is also why Gafgarion can't 'pass' on his Dark Sword skills to anyone else (not even T.G. Cid, if that were possible)
because only a class with access to the same Dark Sword skill set can learn it. Bonus fact: the "Dark Knight" class that
Gafgarion is in at the start of Chapter 2 is a different 'class' than the one you fight at the end of Chapter 2 (it has
some status immunities the other doesn't). This means that neither can learn "Dark Sword" abilities from the other!

2) The class has to not have the skill already.

More or less self-explanatory, and particularly comes up in the case of monsters. Theoretically a Red Panther could
learn 'Poison Nail' from another Red Panther (the chance is actually 100%!), but Red Panthers are never found without
having already learned the ability.

3) The unit that crystallizes must have learned the ability.

Pretty obvious, but potentially has to be taken in hand with how the computer randomly determines skills for units. The
following is speculation but seems to be close to how it works: when an enemy unit is generated at the start of a
battle, the game gives it an amount of JP (presumably based on it's level) for it's class, and then goes down the list
through the classes randomly determining whether to 'purchase' a skill or not. If 'yes,' the JP is subtracted and this
continues, until there is insufficient JP to purchase another skill.

The JP given to learn these skills is never generous, thus it's unlikely you'll find a random Wizard who knows Flare; it's
too expensive, and there are too many skills the computer to take before it. This is also why you rarely see units with
reaction, move, or support abilities other than Equip Change or Defend.

4) A unit has a certain percentage chance of inheriting a particular skill from a crystal.

The chance they'll be able to learn said skill is as follows (thanks once again to the FFT Battle Mechanics Guide!):

NOTE: Monster Skills and Special Unit Skills, and dummy skills that cannot be found in the game have been removed,
since you can't 'learn' them without some Gameshark antics. The tables below were the simplest way I could think of to
show the 'chance' of learning a skill without tons of effort. It makes things more comparable this way too, as well as
shortens the post.

The most useful thing to do with this information is to 'jump start' a special character using a generic character. Since
you're not going to use that random you've had since level 1, why not put his corpse to good use? Well, I guess that
could be a bit difficult to swallow...

With his minions gone, the once mighty Gafgarion should be easy to take down. The castle's defenses are broken! A
sinister power lies within the castle between us and Princess Ovelia... a battle which will have to wait until next time.

This is your last chance to put in your vote for a Monster Party! Remember: three monsters (the base type) ranked
one to three.

(Funny happenstance: the game didn't move to complete the battle until after Jessica cast Haste on herself, right after
Gafgarion crystallized. I think it might have been due to Jessica and Jean's CT being the same, but I'm not certain.
It's not the first time I've seen it happen.)

See you next time, with the conclusion of Chapter 2!

Is it? I thought Two Swords was usually superior because of stacking effects and miscellaneous other effects. Looking at the BMG, I don't see any reference to attack damage being lowered with Two Swords. Seems like the only downside is that if the enemy evades the first attack, it's more likely to evade the second.

Doesn't that explain it? Axes have high attack to compensate for their randomness. ... So do flails, though, and there strongest flail is stronger than the strongest axe (albeit harder to come by), so maybe it's just meant to be a mystery, like Bolt 2.

I once gave Reis over 60 skills from a single crystal that way. I'm not proud of it.

I seem to recall the strategy guide saying you should kill G and take his crystal for sweet abilities. Every time I'd try and then be like "wtf strategy guide, you lied to me!" If only I could overcome my aversion to writing in books, I'd have made a note to myself about that long long ago...

Most weapons (including some of the most powerful) don't have added value (such as Excaliber's bonus Haste), thus for most characters, the decision is (PA*2) * WP for Two Hands versus PA * WP1 + PA * WP2 for Two Swords (generally of course). Thus all you end up doing is using two weapons instead of one, a problem for those rare weapons you get only one of (so you can`t pair it with itself).

As I mentioned, Knight Swords are an exception, as are certain stat boosting weapons, but I guess my point was that in some cases, Two Hands can be as effective, if not more.

Also, the whole 120 JP Axe skill I chalk up to random programmig error. The WP thing doesn't really work, else why would tossing Dictionaries cost the same as tossing Knight Swords?

I wish there were more special battles like this one, mainly because it's hilarious to cheat your way around the wall by over-preparing with stuff like Fly.

Oh, because I was in a hurry with my last response:

Two Swords doubles your Weapon Power, not PA, thus the equation I wrote above is technically wrong (although the result would be the same).

And, because after reflection (and a nice Turkey Dinner) I probably was too harsh on Two Swords. Two Swords is also superior for bare-handed combat, or with the Knight's "Battle Skill", as it triggers each instance of the break twice.

For what it's worth on the translation issue with names- in English, using L's instead of R's just seems to make more sense. None of those names with translation issues that use R's sound very good when said out loud. So... Luveria and Omdolia. It's up to you, but it really doesn't sound right to me as Ruveria and Omdoria.

Also, Two Swords is the only way to get past Blade Grasp. Even if the target can block the first hit, the second one will always connect. On the other hand, another downside to Two Swords is that, if the first hit has knockback, the second swing will be useless.

How does Two Swords affect (if it even does) the damage output for Holy Sword, Mighty Sword, and Swordskill abilities?

I just wanted you to know, Eddie, that I never intended to ever play this game again until reading your LP. Now I've gone and put it on my Christmas list. SO THANKS FOR THAT.

Gafgarion's sign is Virgo. He will deal (and take) more damage if Ramza is either a Capricorn or a Taurus.
That explains a lot.

(I had some issues with this battle the first time I played, giving Ramza my birthday and making him a Taurus. Eventually I resorted to cheating with purple chocobos and archers).

Two-hands is good for weapons that can't be dual wielded (lances, sticks), or if you don't have a second weapon that matches the firsts WP (not common), or if you are too cheap or lazy to get a second weapon.

I'd say two-swords is better more often, and better overall.

The second hit is subject to normal evasion (and the target is now facing the attacker.)

They get their damage and element from the top hand. But it checks both slots to see if either is a sword. So you can put a flail in the top hand and a sword in the bottom to make use of the flail's high weapon power for your sword skills.

Ruvelia sounds nice.

This is the classical downfall of dual-wielding (at least in my experience). A Two-Handed Chirijiraden is better than a Chirijiraden and a Masamune, for example... at least for regular attacks. There are plenty of weapons with stat bonuses and special effects, though (dual Ice Brands is a good time). Two Swords is also great with Battle Skill (as you mentioned) and Snipe.

Scarcity of weapons is usually the only reason to use Two Hands over Two Swords (or Gauntlet over Genji Glove, etc.). I had thought that maybe the second Two Swords attack was weakened or something, I'm sure I've seen that somewhere....

That one's easy enough: Dictionaries are easier to come by. I agree that it's probably an oversight, though. There are plenty of other oddities to back this up.

Or you can say "who cares, I just want to dual wield two swords because it it is AWESOME." This is why FF Tactics is so great.

I don't think the second Two Swords attack is weakened, although like Coinspinner said the target will always be facing you on the second swing.

Not necessarily a bad thing, since if they somehow survive you could easily have them facing where you can get your next unit attacking from behind.

Also, I believe they only turn to face you when you hit.

The opposite actually. They won't turn if you hit them, but they turn if they block or evade in any way.

Every time I play this battle I have Ramza take out Gafgarion solo. It just feels right that way.

Also, the next battle ranks among my favorites in all of videogames.

Phew! Holidays! So things happened over the holidays...

I'm going to try and have a good update done for you guys in the next few days. I tried to record a video for the last fight in the chapter, and the results were somewhat mixed. I'm still flipping on whether to re-record it or not, without taking screenshots.

Regardless, have a Happy New Year, and thanks for giving this poor man over 30k views!

Nice video Eddie! Man, that boss sure went down like a chump!

As long as I'm posting - everybody, drop in for AlphaWolf's streaming FFT LP if you have the chance.

I can finally watch, now that I've passed you in the game!

You forgot a good point about ol' Gaffy. Ramza can easily Chakra every turn to nullify his Night Sword :P

Incindentally, my Cu Chullain ran away while casting Nightmare. But it was still over within a couple of punches and summons!

I've done some New Years drinking and I think I'm going to go with my gut and re-record the fight. At the very least the comments I made in it are distracting!

So expect a new round of the fight in the next few days!

That particular video is nothing special. But look him up and browse his videos, he's a crazy dude.

Oh damn, I totally forgot about the monster battle. If it isn't too late...

1. Chocobo
2. Great Morbol
3. Woodman

If it is, then don't worry about it.
