Hydra/Tiamat = Venger

Behemoth = Betsy

And good god, the PSX script for "the stones aren't inherently evil" is nigh-incomprehensible. I guess it means we had to deal with the 'problem' of figuring out what the hell Ramza meant until the PSP version came out.

In short, it's what Zef said: the stones themselves are powerful, but they're not inherently evil. There are two ways you can go with this.

The first is the idea that not all the stones contain "Lucavi" or demons or whatever in them. This is unlikely, given that if only certain stones were 'cursed' as it were, then why would people like Vormav looking for all of them? I mean, sucks if you get a stone with no demon inside! It's be like a Kinder Surprise egg with no toy in the middle.

The second is to view the stones as tools that sort of amplify desire. "Evil" desire creates (or revives) the Lucavi, and the price you pay for desiring such power is that you lose your soul/body. "Good" desire however, let's you do awesome things like revive the dead and make robots move. But is there a price to pay when you do awesome instead of evil? That I'm not sure of, and the game leaves that question intentionally vague (which is probably for the best).

I think the truth is this: Zodiac Stones give you cool boss fights, and otherwise are used to do impossible and/or silly things for the benefit of your party.

Well, I consider Malak a benefit to any of my parties, but your results might differ.

I figured they did that so the Assassins could get more HP from regular headgear. I once managed to steal both, but it was a close battle. I can usually steal the Cachusha (yeah, yeah, Poach... but that's luck-based) and still win.

I make no secret of the fact that I consider speed to be the only really important stat in this game (and many others). If you can survive the solo Weigraf battle and not realise how important speed is... well, Riovanes Rooftops should get the message through. Auto-Potion cheapness won't save your ass here!

A group with a Ninja or two (Red Chocobo works in a pinch) should have no trouble regardless of Rafa's AI.

I... I like Rafa and Malak. They have rare elemental attacks (wind, water, and earth), and their status spells can cripple enemies. Plus, they can wield Sticks. They aren't as immediately impressive as Agrias (Swordskill!) and Mustadio (Gun! Snipe!), though, and you get those two much earlier.

I assumed they were just a means of contacting 'otherworldly' powers. In light of FFXII's bestiary, I'd say each stone except Serpentarius is connected to an Esper 'pair' - Belias and Loghrif, for example. Rafa's selfless desire made her connect with the Scion of Light for that stone.

Although... this speculation is all based on the original script. I suppose the WotL script says something completely different?

I checked the one on gamefaqs, and it says essentially the same thing - but in a much clearer way. I haven't actually play that far yet to verify it, though.

Yep, quoting it from there, it goes like...

Quote:
[Ramza walks one final time through Riovanes Castle in search of his sister. He spies Isilud's body and the Zodiac Stone that his sister had left.]

Marach (voice over): A voice called to me in that land of pure white light, though whose it was I cannot say. "Return," it said to me. "Return to the side of the valiant - the one whose heart beats true."

[Ramza picks up the Stone.]

Ramza: Another Zodiac Stone? But why would it be here?

Ramza (voice over): I'd thought auracite a product not of godly fashion, but an issue of hands far fouler - a gateway of sorts for Lucavi into our world

Marach (voice over): I know not by whose hands it came to be, but I do not think its evil inherent. I believe it is the wielder gives its power shape.
I have a save file just prior to the battle. I'll confirm the script when I get a chance to play it.

And come to think of it, isn't it odd that Vormav would leave one of the Zodiac Stones just lying around near Izlude's body for anyone's taking? Maybe it's associated with a Lucavi that Ramza has already slain, and he would therefore consider its power "spent," but still...

I think despite sharing a connection to each other, that the Lucavi cannot 'sense' the presence of Zodiac Stones. It's not unreasonable to assume that Izlude didn't want to tell him that 'hey, I've got one of these things on me' (of course, how he has one on him is a big ol' plot hole). Not having any desire to be taken over by Lucavi after seeing his father turn into one, the stone did not respond to Izlude.

Hence, Izlude is able to pass it onto Alma.

But why Izlude has a stone in the first place after being captured by Barinten is a really good question. I'll give an ol'fashioned Marvel "no prize" to whoever can come up with the best explanation why!

Eeep. I knew the last update would be memory intensive but I didn't think it'd be that bad.

I can link to the posts individually in the first post if you think that would prevent such a thing from happening again.

That's pretty much what I did; the only reason I didn't buff his speed and PA more is that it was boring, and giving him much more experience than I would have liked it to.

Regarding Rafa and Malak: I've ridden the hate train as much as anyone else, but they did something to Rafa the make her stupid powerful in War of the Lions. I swear her attacks have more charges, hit their targets more often, and hit harder. She's great.

Malak's attacks still blow though since they rely on low faith and many units in the game have a above average or high faith.

Rafa is amazing in War of the Lions. I turned her into a party mainstay as soon as she joined up. She would frequently land ten -- yes, ten -- successful hits in a single turn.

I like Rafa and Malak because they attack with philosophy. What the hell.

Rafa is ok right from the get-go and is fun to build up (as is Reis, <3.) Malak is too much work for me though.

Also, Faith and Innocent are reversed for him. You'd think he'd benefit from Innocent, but nope. Give the man a Faith Rod and he can rock out with Back-Truth Un-Truth and normal magic at the same time.

(Scene: Rafa and Malak join Ramza in their search for his
sister. The aftermath of the Lucavi attack has left no sign
of Alma...)

(Ramza's Theme)

Ramza: No... she wasn't.

Malak: She was in this castle. Probably gone now...

Ramza: The other one, Izlude, was dead also... That
means that the third one took my sister away...?

Malak: They're following the High Priest's orders, right?

Ramza: I doubt the High Priest knows the stone's secret.
Wiegraf didn't know the secret until he contracted Velius...
And I think that Izlude died fighting Lucavi.

Ramza: I'm sure that's the High Priest's true ambition. But
collecting the stones and using the Brave Legend to use
the people...

Malak: You mean even the High Priest's being used?

Malak: What're you going to do?

Ramza: Does Delita know the truth about Vormav?

returns to Zeltennia Castle from the front lines. What he's
discovered goes well beyond the horror of the Lion War...)

(Thunder God Cid's Theme)

(Olan moves up to meet his father.)

Olan: Fine. How was the front?

Orlandu: You know, it's really horrible.

Olan: Everyone says it's because of you that the other
generals are still here.

Orlandu: Pledging life-long loyalty. That's the Orlandu
way... Watch what you say.

Olan: I'm sorry... I'll be careful from now on.

Olan: Another was found by the late Cardinal at the end of
the War. The Shrine Knights have been active, but we
don't know their plans yet.

Olan: We'd like some proof of the High Priest's plot and
move into peace...

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Welcome back!

Chapter 4 opens up a host of bar jobs and stuff to do. We're going to go through some of this content before
continuing onto the main story; this also gives us a chance to get our regular units caught up to Ramza (experience
wise) and show off how to get some of the 'secret' characters. Of course, if you've played this game you likely already
know how to get these guys!

We're also going to need to kick out a bunch of special characters to make room for Monsters to properly breed, but we
can do that next update. We need Mustadio in our party for the next part (for obvious reasons).

First stop in the quest for optional characters:

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Goug Machine City

(Scene: Musatio's father Besrodio has found something
unusual in the ruins of Goug. There will be comedy.)

(Treasure)

Besrodio: I tried to take it apart, but I didn't know what
to prod where.

Mustadio: What is this steel ball?

(Ramza approaches the mysterious object.)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Next on our quest is a stop into Goland Coal City's pub, for a unique rumour here that will only show up in this city:

Now go north to Lesalia Imperial Capital to trigger a cutscene!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Lesalia Imperial Capital
(Scene: Ramza wanders into a pub searching for a nice
cold glass of...?)

(Meeting with Algus)

Bar Master: Ha, I like you. Never seen anyone order that
at a bar. You must've seen a lot of bloodshed. But you
don't drink, eh?

Monk: And we can't count on Knights either in this day and
age.

Squire: All of Goland's recruiting hunters, I hear.

Bar Master: Wow, very impressive! If only Sir Balbanes
were alive...

Bar Master: Are you going?

Ramza: Yeah. I'll just go and see.

Bar Master: Good luck.

(As Ramza goes to leave, the solitary figure at the other
table stops him.)

Beowulf: I've been searching for this Holy Dragon. What do
you think? I'll probably be helpful.
(Author's Note: he won't be at all.)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
With Beowulf temporarily recruited, we can venture into Goland Coal City. You'll fight four battles one after another
(with time to switch jobs/equipment and save in-between of course). The battles are generally pretty easy, but we'll
be touching on some highlights.
Note: Bring someone with Steal Weapon!

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Colliery Underground Third Floor
(Antidote)
The first fight has you against a large number of Chemists. It's kind of a cute battle; the Chemists all have Mythril Guns
equipped, so be careful when casting spells. With their range, they can easily team up and shoot down a unit,
particularly one that is charging an ability. Spells like Golem, and abilities like Auto-Potion and Blade Grasp make this
encounter trivial.

Beowulf will be in the party as a guest, and will be doing his best to be completely worthless. On a side note, yes we've
turned Junk into a Bard (to get Move +3), and yes we're going to sink his Faith.

Bonus Money: 13,500 Gil
War Trophies: Mythril Bow, Mythril Shield

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Colliery Underground Second Floor
(Under the Stars)
This fight has two points of interest: The first is a King Behemoth that we'll be recruiting so he can breed us a Dark
Behemoth. I had Junk equipped with Monster Talk in case I ran into any good monsters while running around the map
doing jobs, so this Behemoth becomes ours without too much trouble. They can hit pretty hard, so it might be worth it
to give any prospective recruiter an Elf Mantle or the like to try and avoid their Stab Up attack (it has a chance to
Add: Dead).

The Chemist on the map is always equipped with a very rare Blaze Gun. Despite it's name, the Blaze Gun shoots
powerful ice magic at it's target, which unfortunately in this battle meant Ramza kept getting smoked for 300+ damage
every time I revived him.

(And yes, the Glacier Gun you find later shoots fire bullets.)

Bonus Money: 14,500 Gil
War Trophies: Mythril Knife, Mythril Spear

Monsters get recruited just like special characters, which is
to say, after the battle.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Colliery Underground First Floor
(Antidote)
This map is even less notable than the previous two. There's a semi-rare Uribo you can recruit if you'd like (I did want
to, but we'll grab another later), as well as a pair of Blue Dragons. The Blue Dragons have a very strong Ice Bracelet
attack that can easily take one of your units down, so nail em with status effects or nuke them from a distance.

Fun fact: all the hidden items we're not getting, as well as the "War Trophy" treasures are all Mythril items. At this
point, Mythril items are absolutely worthless to us!

Okay, let's get to the reason we came here.

Bonus Money: 15,500 Gil
War Trophies: Mythril Sword, Mythril Armor
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

You want people to have at a Jump value of 4 for this battle; without it you'll be forced to take a longer route which
can put your mission in danger! Equip accessories or use classes to get this value!
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Underground Passage in Goland
(Scene: A group of monsters lead by a demon surround an
oddly coloured dragon. Is this the monster that everyone
is looking for?)

(Espionage)

Schinoeg: If you value your life, hand it over now!!

(Ramza and Beowulf enter from a passageway to the
north.)

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

While Reis the Holy Dragon can reliably one-shot those enemies with its Ice Bracelet attack (it has a very high MA!) it can't
survive being assaulted by all those enemies at once. None of them are particularly dangerous to Reis aside from the
Demon, which still has the same Dark Holy and Giga Flare attacks they had back on the Velius fight.

The team starts in a bit of a pit, which means that you either need to work around it the long way of have a Jump
value high enough to simply jump up (four is all you need). Germanis Boots are ideal for those classes who only have a
base move of 3.

The enemy Plagues are the biggest random factor in this fight, their Look of Devil attack capable of inflicting Don't Act
or Petrify on your units. I think getting a Jump of 4 via an accessory is more important than equipping a status
prevention accessory (particularly since the status effects the Plagues use are unreliable), so my advice is to simply
suck the chance up.

Bringing two units capable of healing Reis is your best bet in case the worst befalls one of them. Chemists are your best
bet; Reis has low Brave and Faith values (around 30 for each!) so Cure spells and the like are going to be weak.
Samurai's can use Murasame, and Ramza can use Wish.

Spoiler: finishing this fight will get Beowulf into your party, along with his dragon friend Reis. Let's get ahead of
ourselves then, and take a look at this Beowulf fellow!

Beowulf Kadmus the Temple Knight

Okay, don't let his poor performance in the previous maps fool you: Beowulf kicks a lot of ass. His skill set is essentially
an Oracle's crossed with the Holy Sword skill, with the following changes:
  • + Instant cast!
  • + High success rates/effects!
  • + Cannot be reflected (but can still be evaded)
  • - Usually cost more MP
  • - Must be wielding a sword or knight sword to use.
  • - Affect only one panel.
  • - Terrible skill names (albeit easy to understand)

Drawbacks aside, being instant cast and having better success rates still makes his skill set trump an Oracle's. They are
affected by his Faith and MA, but like most status effects Faith and Zodiac Compatibility are more important factors
than the MA score. Beowulf can equip robes, which you might find useful for the MP they provide.

Weapon: Knife, Sword, Knight Sword, Shield
Helmet: Armored Helmet
Armor: Armor, Robe

Move: 4
Jump: 3
Physical Evasion Rate: 14%

Skills to get: Chicken, Don't Act, Break

Unique Skill: Magic Sword
Blind: Magic sword blind enemy with darkness, lowering success % of direct attacks (Add: Darkness).
MP: 6, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 50
(More worthwhile as an Oracle since it's such a quick Yin-Yang spell. For Beowulf, you have so much more you can get
him doing.)

Aspel: Magic sword absorbs enemy's MP, restoring its own.
MP: 2, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 100
(Grabs 25% of an enemy's MP. Grab it if you find yourself running out of MP often.)

Drain: Magic sword absorbs enemy's HP, restoring its own.
MP: 12, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 180
(Steals 25% of an enemy's HP. VERY useful against Zodiac bosses due to their high HP.)

Faith: Magic sword fills the soul with a huge amount of faith (Add: Faith).
MP: 10, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 200
(You know how much you're casting Pray Faith and Doubt Faith as an Oracle?)

Innocent: Magic sword makes enemy disrespectful and not believe in God (Add: Innocent).
MP: 10, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 200
(Yeah, that's what I thought. Skip these.)

Zombie: Magic sword brings bodily death. Unable to restore HP (Add: Undead).
MP: 14, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 150
(Very situational, and therefore easily skippable.)

Silence: Magic sword mutes enemy, making it impossible to cast spells (Add: Silence).
MP: 16, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 90
(The instant cast nature of this makes it great against enemy Wizards and Summoners. Beowulf starts with this, so
it's free anyway.)

Berserk: Magic sword releases desire to destroy, making enemy wild (Add: Berserk).
MP: 16, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 200
(It's not often you can't accomplish whatever you'd use Berserk for by simply using a different Magic Sword skill. Fun
to use on your own units however!)

Chicken: Magic sword strikes fear and cowardice into the enemy, lowering their Brave level.
MP: 12, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 500
(Here we go. You want an awesome skill? Well how about a reliable -50 Brave per swing. That's right, -50. Two uses of
this skill will turn any non-chicken-immune unit into something fowl. Wrecks many monsters, several units, and hell.
It's called Chicken.)

Confuse: Magic sword makes enemy irrational and act disorderly (Add: Confusion).
MP: 14, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 200
(There are better Magic Sword skills than this one.)

Despair: Magic sword neutralizes magic power and cancels the effective status (Cancel: Float, Reraise, Transparent,
Regen, Protect, Shell, Haste, Faith, Reflect).
MP: 20, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 300
(Beowulf's Dispel Magic skill. It's okay, but you won't use it often.)

Don't Act: Magic sword limits movements making enemy unable to act (Add: Don't Act).
MP: 14, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 50
(An awesome skill! This should be the first one you pick up.)

Sleep: Magic sword disrupts heartbeat, immediately putting enemy asleep (Add: Sleep).
MP: 20, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 170
(almost as good as Don't Act. You'll want this one.)

Break: Magic sword alters body turning enemy to stone (Add: Petrify).
MP: 24, Range: 4. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 300
(Beowulf's best skill. With his Faith raised, the chances of Beowulf one-shotting enemies is very high.)

Shock!: The more damage you receive, the more damage you can inflict.
MP: 20, Range: 8. Effect: 1. CTR: Now. JP Cost: 600
(This skill has great range, but it's pretty situational since it requires Beowulf to be at low HP to be very good. It can't
be evaded and has a 100% success rate, so it's still worth it to occasionally kill an enemy.)

As long as you can get someone over to toss Reis some HP, this fight is quick since the Plague's have low HP and Reis
is going to run around Ice Braceletting everything the death. Both Beowulf and Reis will join the party after the battle.
We're not done with the secret character collection however!

Bonus Money: 17,000 Gil

Beowulf: Yes, she's more important to me than life itself.
I truly thank you.

Beowulf: Weren't you looking for this?

Ramza: Why do you...?

Ramza: I'll trust you. Now, let's get out of here.

Beowulf we have already gone through, Reis herself is just a slightly beefed up Dragon, but keep her around as we can
make her better later in the chapter.

That stone the Beowulf just gave us is Aquarius, which matches the symbol Besrodio saw on that mysterious steel ball.
Head back to Goug and we can see what was in that steel ball!

Goug Machine City
(Scene: what horror will be unleashed by the unholy union
of this monstrous construct from ancient times and the
hellish demonic energy that surely powers the Aquarius
Zodiac stone!?!?!?)

Steel Giant: Master, what is your order?

Mustadio: Wow! It spoke!!

Steel Giant: Master, your order, please!

(There is a pause.)

Mustadio: Ramza, Give him an order.

Ramza: A, all right...

(The Steel Giant starts uh, moving to an unknown beat.)

Ramza: Well... well then...

Worker 8, the Steel Giant

A cool unit that more or less acts like a monster, Worker 8 comes equipped with Counter, Defense UP, and zero faith,
meaning most magic won't work on him. He's not a terribly effective character, but he's solid and unique!

Like many big monsters, you can use Worker 8 as a stepping stone to get to higher ledges!

Move: 3
Jump: 3
Physical Evasion Rate: 0%
Innate abilities: Any Ground, Any Weather. Cannot enter water.

Unique Skill: Work
Destroy: Top priority command. Destroys its target.
Range: 1,2. Effect: 1. CTR: Now.
(All of Worker 8's attacks do damage to a target and damage to itself. All his attacks are based off his PA. This one
deals about 1/8th of the damage done back to Worker 8.)

Compress: Top priority command. Compresses its target.
Range: 1,2. Effect: 1. CTR: Now.
(Ignore the help info which says this skill sometimes Adds Dead status to targets it hits. It simply hits harder than
Destroy. Compress deals about 1/6th the damage back to Worker 8.)

Dispose: Team work command. Disposes of all enemies at once.
Range: 8. Effect: 2,1. CTR: Now.
(A long range "Destroy" that deals about 1/4 of the damage dealt back to Worker 8. You can use Items or an effect
like Wish or Murasame to heal Worker 8. Only Zodiac Compatibility affects the damage done, but the damage taken
back will remain the same.)

Crush: Special work command. Crushes target.
Range: 1,0. Effect: 1. CTR: Now.
(Worker 8's most powerful attack requires him to be on even terrain with the target. He'll take about 1/4 of the
damage dealt back. Worker 8 is considered a Gemini, so try and avoid Virgo, Pisces and Sagittarius targets.)

We continue to gather treasures and explore unknown locations, raising our meaningless ranks even further! You can
check out the respective Bar Treasure and Unexplored Land pages to see the new items. One for our Zodiac Stones
and Geomonik Scriptures follows below this post!

Bar Rumours!

Finally, let's take a look at what our characters are shaping up to be. There has been some changes! We're really
entering a phase of the game where our characters are more or less not going to get appreciatively better by adding
new skills; they've either already learned them, or they wouldn't compliment the ones they already have! If you have
any skills you think a character would benefit from having, post here so I can get them!

Ramza has jumped all around the place, so he's a little unfocused outside of hitting enemies with a stick really hard.
He's also got a new portrait and sprite for Chapter 4! That's not all that's new with him, but we'll save that for another
time...

I would love to learn some Draw Out skills for Ramza, but I'm still having fun poking people to death. What does
everyone else think?

I'm going to be listing each unit's notable skills for reference to those who would like to suggest skills/classes for each
unit. Ramza has the following notable skills:

Guts

Auto-Potion

Two Hands
Two Swords

Move +3
Teleport

Everyone's favorite Thief has become a Ninja for lack of a better place to go with him. The Ninja's high Speed will help
him Talk to his allies with greater frequency.

Oh, and in a pinch he can clobber enemies. He also shrugs off most magic with his 6 Faith.

Junk has the following notable abilities:

Steal
Talk Skill
Elemental

Speed Save
Blade Grasp

Martial Arts
Attack UP
Two Swords

Move +3

Jean has temporarily become a Mediator so he can unlock the Bard class for Move +3. He'll put that Blaze Gun we
recently picked up to good use in the meantime!

Samurai/Lancer hasn't been all that hot for Jean to be honest; I think after Move +3 it would be best to get a skill that
really compliments a Lancer, which means we'll probably switch into Knight after he gets his Sing on.

Jean has the following notable abilities:

Jump
Draw Out

Blade Grasp

Two Hands

Move +2

The dark oracle Sullivan has now gotten the best Oracle skills, so is pretty much cleaning up the rest. He could use a
better Reaction ability, and I'm flirting with getting him Move +3.

Sullivan has the following notable abilities:

Black Magic
Yin-Yang Magic

Weapon Guard

Magic AttackUP

Move +2

Tabitha is working on becoming our third 'mastered' Thief, because you can never have enough! She uh, also needs
Move +2. After that we might put her back in Chemist for Magic Gun usage... but that might defeat the whole "Ninja
Chemist" thing.

Tabitha has the following notable skills:

Item
Steal
Throw

Auto Potion
Abandon

Throw Item
Two Swords

Move +1

Sissie is pretty much perfect. I can't really think of something I'd change on her, although I'm open for suggestions.
She's back to Monk to truly "Master" the class.

Maybe I should unlock Mime with her?

Sissie has the following notable abilities:

Punch Art
Steal

Speed Save
HP Restore
Blade Grasp

Two Swords
Martial Arts

Move +2

Finally, we get to Jessica who has finally mastered all the skills in Summoner. Are people even still interested in seeing a
Calculator rip the game in half? Well, regardless shes just entered the class, so will be stuck trying to work JP up until
such time that she is able to Holy everything to death. I mean everything.

(Until then? 5 Speed. That's with two +1 Speed items equipped. Yay.)

I've worked on reducing her Brave with Junk for Move-Find goodness. This makes her choice of Reaction abilities
somewhat poor!

Jessica has the following notable abilities:

Summon Magic

Weapon Guard

Half of MP
Magic AttackUP

Teleport
That's it for this, er, update. We'll be back into the meat of the game next time. I will be updating the treasure pages,
but there might be some delay as I do that, but rest assured they should be done by the end of the day!

See you next time!

to be continued...

I just want to say that Temple Knight is my favorite playable special class. Ramza's Squire in Chapter 4 is close, though.
