Yes (well, not in that book, but you can start playing with later books and it gives you to the option to not have it) but then you run into instant death situations in the later books. Don't worry, they rapidly start inflating monster stats to match.

Heh. Just wait until the grandmaster books, where the usual everday random encounter is packing a CS of sixty (insert very mild embellishment here). Yeah.

The end of book 2 is set to make you feel like you're OVER 9000!!!!!! with the SillySword, but not only do enemies rise in level, boss fights are gated with a preceding choice that goes along the lines of "Are you packing HAWESOME? Then turn to page 90, where he turns his axe into a thing of living flame."

It's interloping time!
Loki, hope you don't mind me supplementing your thread. So to get us ready for the next book The Caverns of Kalte. First off, Loki's been bringing us what I believe is the traditional UK cover art so far, but the series has had a lot of different covers over time. You can browse some here. Please note that the art quality ranges from the rather awesome to OH SWEET JESUS KILL IT KILL IT, IT JUST WANTS TO DIE!
Now, my copy of the Kooky Kaverns of Kalte starts with this: I have helpfully filled out a sample one for everyone, but feel free to make your own. Don't ask me why I bothered getting out the Wacom for this when my handwriting sucks anyway Also, this may be of use for those d20 challenged, who are playing along at home. Lil' Ben didn't have d20's until many years after he played this series, so he had to resort to the close your eyes and poke the page. By this book, he'd learned to use his finger instead of marking it up with pencil tips or wearing it away slowly with erasers (trust me, it's doable). Please note the streak I left on the page from when I used an uncapped pen. Oh the memories! Ah, veritas! |
