Googling hasn’t very helpful on that matter; the Language Selector only seems to affect the menus.

Does anyone else have any experience with this thing?

Didn’t see an option for individual games’ language options when I checked but I only tried a handful

Fix Your DSi's Faulty Shoulder Buttons With This One Weird Trick!

As I've mentioned elsewhere on the forum, a few weeks ago I found a shiny blue DS Lite in very good condition (in the trash!), and it sent me down the road of revisiting some games from the DS catalog. About halfway through a replay of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, however, I started to feel like the screen on the DS Lite was just too cramped for me. I got out my trusty old DSi, and sure enough, the larger screen made a world of difference, especially when it came to distinguishing the fine lines on the map screen. HOWEVER, just as I was starting to get used to those nice big screens again, I realized I had a problem: the R button on my DSi wasn't responding any more. This was doubly irritating, because I had originally bought the DSi to replace my original DS Lite because it was suffering from faulty shoulder buttons!

Now, being a little older and a little wiser, I decided that I would see if there was any way to fix the problem. It turns out that, not only is there a way to improve the functioning of the DSi shoulder buttons, but it's totally trivial to do! All you have to do is stick the corner of your console into your mouth and blow as hard as you can. Doing so seems to push air through the space between the button and the case, cleaning out the contacts. I tried it on both buttons (the R wasn't working at all and the L was being pretty finicky) and now they're right as rain. I don't know how long this fix will last, but it's easy enough to do it again, so long as you don't mind looking a little stupid in the process. I hope this doesn't do any long-term damage to the buttons, but I figure I was already going to have to replace them if I couldn't find a less-invasive solution. If you ever decide to try this for yourself, try to get the air to go in from the side and come out the top of the console. It's simple as can be and only a little gross, depending on how clean your system is!

Kazin

did i do all of that?
(he/him)
That does work, yes, and I used that tactic on my original DS Lite before eventually just taking it apart and cleaning it/reseating the buttons and springs, which is what you should do if you can (the springs on the shoulder buttons are extremely annoying to deal with, so if you have shaky hands or something, I wouldn't recommend taking the DS apart).

When I finally did take the DS apart, my L button (which was the one I was having problems with) was gross and once cleaned and put back together, worked like a charm. What's happening with your DSs is there's dirt/grime in there, and blowing into it may dislodge some of it, but the moisture from your breath is going to likely cause problems down the road (just with further grime getting stuck in there, I mean, not rust or anything).

Good fix, much easier than doing a full teardown and trying to put the little springs back on the triggers correctly. I remember people saying to use canned air to do the same thing, which is probably safer since you won't be blowing moisture into the system.

I think I broke my original launch DS shoulder button from playing Drill Dozer, so I wonder if this trick would've helped back then. That system's long gone though, can't test it out.

Yeah, the blowing trick will only work for a bit. Opening the back up and replacing them / using contact cleaner is better in the long term

Oh, and as a counterpoint to the above; the replacement Neo Geo Mini I also arrived today, and is a cute widdle guy and I wuv it.

And it DOES seem to be using the English ROMs

Yeah, the in-game option menus would sometimes have the option to change to English, but it doesn’t apply to every game; which hurts some games more than others.

I’m assuming there’s some chicanery that would replace everything with English roms

The Neo-Geo Mini is underrated. I know a lot of people bag on it for the analog, non-clicky stick and the terrible TV output, but it's quite handy for scratching that occasional itch to beat up some dudes in Mutation Nation. Are you gonna hack yours?

Fatal Fury Special for one!

Yeah, the Neo Geo Mini is cool and well worth getting, I just wish it'd had as much love as the Astro City Mini did.

Luckily, Fatal Fury Special is a lucky recipient of a language I can read!

Super Spy appears to be unplayable in this state

I could be convinced to hack the Pro Stick, as the lack of English roms is something I’d like to overcome (and feel like some of the Minis games would benefit from the larger screen and controller, but I have no idea how intuitive that process is and haven’t looked into it

I was talking about hacking the Neo-Geo Mini (tiny arcade cabinet), but yeah, both can be done. Look up "Scarlet Sprites Hylo Hack" or "Madlittlepixel Hylo Hack" on YouTube and you should get instructions for hacking the arcade stick. The only problem is that you have to find the file for the hack, and these two individuals can no longer provide it. I'm sure it's floating around there somewhere... Reddit's probably your best bet for tracking it down.

Oh I have no interest in hacking the l’il guy; it’s perfect.

Or at least as perfect as far as its firmware is concerned; controllers a bit cramped, and hooking the big one up to it is going too far in the other direction

So I FINALLY got one of these, as I received a rg351v as a XMas gift. My initial impression is I don't care for hot key combos for menu navigation. Given they added a separate function button I'm not sure why they couldn't just use that as a universal menu button I navigate/tweak settings from. Note, I'm still on stock firmware and I know should probably upgrade to using 351elec, but I'm not sure that is any different.

Also maybe I'm spoiled by switches and tablets/getting too old, but I wish the screen was bigger? Now I'm eyeballing the Ayn Odin despite having a Steamdeck preordered...

Fake edit: Not to condone piracy, but I do appreciate the stash of fan translated Super Famicom games buried on the SD card that came with mine. I didn't even know half these games had english fan translations.

I'd recommend getting on 351Elec, use Retro Game Corps on YouTube for the instructions. There are tonnes of reasons to do our, not least of all performance improvements. Once you're on it, I can tell you now to get the F button as the hotkey, that how mine's set up.

Alright, getting the 351elec image on the sd card right was a bit fussy, but the deed is done. Yeah, with this one it looks like if I could get it to open the emulation menu by pressing the function button by itself I wouldn't need the other hot key combinations.

I was kind of wondering if I should have asked for a retroid pocket 2+ for my birthday instead since that is coming up and the 2+ is considerably more powerful at a similar price point. After playing this one though I'd have to say no. What the 351v can already play is probably at the limit of what I'd want to play at this screen size. Honestly depending on your emulation wants I'd recommend a modded 2/3DS XL over this because the screen is ever so slightly bigger (to say nothing of also being a 3DS to boot). To be fair the 351v with its Linux derived emulation can also handle a lot more platforms and edge cases than the 3DS homebrew community have the manpower to work through, so it does have its pluses over a 3DS XL.

Also on the plus side I have a full on Pico 8 handheld device finally, with proper wifi and splore as god intended.

I changed the Start & Select thing by pulling up Retroarch while in a game. From the “Quick Menu”, press B one to back out to the Main Menu. Move the cursor to the right to find the Settings menu, then scroll down to the Inputs section. Press A to enter the Inputs settings, then scroll down until you find the Hotkeys section, then press A again to enter these settings. For “Hotkey Enable”, set it to a F, and for “Restart RetroArch”, set it to whatever you want (I stayed with the START button). Back out with B and find the "Save configuration" bit and that's done.
@Becksworth I think this should work for you.

For the moment I'd be wary of the Pocket 2+, the original was hyped to the heavens and turned out to be not great. Let other people than Taki get their viewpoint out, I've seen him say things at half frame rate or missing textures as "playable"

So, I bought one of these and after updating the firmware from here, I can now use my NSO Switch N64 controller with my original N64 console, and it feels great. The firmware update process is a bit weird (I had to temporarily disable Windows Defender to be able to run the update program, not sure why that is a thing), but once it's updated, it works fine. This adapter also allows you to use memory paks with the NSO N64 controller, which you can't do otherwise. Supposedly, if you plug a rumble pak into the adapter, it will send rumble signals to your controller if you're into that sort of thing (I don't have a rumble pak and couldn't care less about rumble, so I haven't tested it myself. Memory paks work great, though).

I've got the upgrade kit for the Pocket 2+. In the next couple of weeks I'm going to get a buddy to help me perform surgery on the thing, and then I'll be able to comment on it.

Initial impressions for the Retroid Pocket 2+:
  • I'm glad I invited a friend who actually understands computer hardware to help. He brought a proper IFIXIT set, and we needed it--the screwdriver included in the upgrade kit was good, but the tweezers were shit and there was no pry-tool. Also, I don't actually know how to (for instance) remove and reattach a ribbon cable, which this requires you to do.
  • You need to replace the buttons. The upgrade kit comes with the buttons. The instructions don't tell you to replace the buttons.
  • They give you the materials to turn the old PCB into a standalone emulator you can plug into a TV. They didn't include instructions for this (we had to find a Youtube video), and we couldn't actually get it to turn on because we didn't have a manual for it, either.
  • When I ordered the upgrade kit, I should have ordered a touchscreen upgrade, too. This runs fairly standard Android, which means that you really need a touchscreen to maneuver everything into place. I ended up connecting a USB mouse through the C to A adaptor the system originally came with.
  • There are two options for front ends once you've got it set up, and at no point does the system become "pick up and play"--I spent an hour figuring out controller settings and downloading RetroArch cores and I still probably have another couple of hours getting settings just-so for every single emulator. The RG350 just runs, y'know? This requires a lot of DIY.
  • This has a wifi antenna and is running standard Android, so there's a lot of flexibility to what you can do with it and what you can install. But again--nothing about it is simple.
I'm sure I have other thoughts, but that's what comes to mind right now.

I'm very interested in this, and especially in seeing how it ends up comparing to the 5X.

In random news, I ordered the new NeoBiosMasta, and there should still be a few on sale if you need one. Now I have to decide if I just want the cheapest legit cart I can get my hands on or splurge on a Neo Geo flashcart...

He apparently sold like half of them in twenty-ish minutes. :p I don't know if you need it for the BIOS or for the VMC, but I think he's going to do a VMC-only run at some point. I have a MV-1C board missing the BIOS, so this will replace that.
