It has arrived!

I'm gonna call it Reggie.

In the process of formatting a spare microSD so I can install some nonfucky firmware on it as we speak.

Okay, so getting 351Elec running off my microSD has been a goddamn bastard so far, because I keep doing things that are Dumb and Wrong,

Things like trying to slap the image file straight onto my card, as opposed to using a flashing program like balenaEtcher to properly flash the image onto my card.

Things like thinking I can just format my card through Windows, when NOPE you're supposed to use specialized formatting software like SD Card Formatter, you dumb idiot animal fuck.

Things like maybe doing that second thing before you start bumblefucking around getting your image file properly installed on your card of choice, and maybe not wasting hours of your precious downtime getting this done.

If you already knew these things, gentle reader, I envy you.

Don't be like me.

I know! I feel in love with that shell the second I saw it.

Success! Got the install running finally, and loaded a few roms into the proper folder to test things out. So far so good!

Once I get back from work tomorrow, I'm gonna start cobblin' me together a library. 😎

Well do, because you managed to work it out in the end. While it'snot a hard process, it is unintuitive. Glad you got it working!

Thank you much! Yeah, unintuitive is a good word for it.

There's also some other kinks that are bugging that I'm gonna try to work out by playing around with the settings later. For example, whenever I quit a game, I have to THEN exit out of RetroArch to get back to my nice neat 351Elec games list. That's an extra step I don't wanna do. I'm sure there's something I can switch around somewhere to not have to do that every time.

This has all still been absolutely worth it, though.

There is: press start and select together twice, it should bring you back to the main menu. If you don't like these buttons, try this:

Pull up Retroarch while in a game. From the “Quick Menu”, press B one to back out to the Main Menu. Move the cursor to the right to find the Settings menu, then scroll down to the Inputs section. Press A to enter the Inputs settings, then scroll down until you find the Hotkeys section, then press A again to enter these settings. For “Hotkey Enable”, set it to a different button (I recommend the F button) back out with B and find the "Save configuration" bit and that's done.

Just to check, are you doing safe shutdown when you turn it off? It's an easy thing to miss

Yeah, to close it down hit Start. Select Quit, Shutdown System, then Yes. Don't hold the power button, there's a danger you'll corrupt the firmware. That's the only gotcha.

Buddy, you have been a lifesaver on this particular endeavor!

I also copied the roms that came with it to an external drive so I could cherry pick a few favorites for the new install. This is the first time I’ve ever played the arcade Alien vs Predator, and I ain’t bout to make that harder to play again than I have to.

Heh, I had to work it out once already, no sense in other Tyrants having to go through that.

I should probably add a part 2 to the "set F to be the function button". Once you've done that, F and Start twice will close the game. It's betterfor games like Link's Awakening where you don't want to shut it down when you're trying to save.

Have you tried Retro Achievements? They're pretty fun. Create an account at Retroachievements.org, sign into it on the RG351V, watch meaningless numbers go up as you play games. It's addictive!

So, I'm thinking about getting one of these on Saturday:

But I have a couple questions for those that have these. I would primarily use it to connect my N64 and Saturn to my HDTV - is it worth the $300 for this, or should I consider modding each of those systems to output HDMI instead? Also, does the Retrotink have an option to force 4:3? I assume it would, but my stupid TV doesn't let me select that aspect ratio for HDMI connections.

The 5x automagically goes to 4:3. Saturn natively outputs RGB and I don't think has an HDMI mod, current state. The N64 HDMI mod costs a fortune, you'd be better served to get one of these and install the RGB board, which is way, way cheaper.

I'm considering this again myself. Already have a TINK 2X I don't use much, though, so... dunno, might hold off a bit longer. I blame the MiSTer. :ROFLMAO:

I had a bad experience with the tink 2x where it didn't output sound to one of my TVs (unless the mode change button was held down), and the response I got was along the lines of "Must be an issue with your TV". I still used it, but I had to run the audio through my stereo instead of the TV. I think this was maybe addressed with later versions of the 2x but I wasn't much impressed with the support.

I ended up getting a TINK 2x mini, which after watching some videos, is pretty much designed for the N64 and comes with an s-video cable, so hopefully that will work for me. I may install the HDMI mod eventually, but I'll wait to see if/when it's available. Thanks everyone!
