Dang, that site has a user review of Octopus from off Usenet in 1982. I'd forgotten Usenet went that far back, and Google still has the archives!

Thanks, but I'll pass - I think I just want to collect the Nintendo ones. Unless you're planning on throwing it out or something - otherwise, hang on to it.

I've tried the Adam firmware on my RG280V. It's not quite ready for the big time in my opinion; exiting Retroarch can be a bit of a coin flip whether it works or not (although that's no issue as you use a different button commands when that happens and it still works).

From a UI point of view, however, it's a huge step forward. It's much closer to the RG351 experience and makes it feel like a new console.

Anyone have any experience with the Arcade1up cabinets?

I was thinking that one of the countertop units might make a good birthday present to myself

I don't have any experience with those, but I do have an Atgames Legends Ultimate that I wrote about somewhere here. It's $100US more expensive than it used to be, and out of stock many places, but it gives you more flexibility than an Arcade1up cabinet on modding, in exchange for less good built-in games. Arcade1up wants you to get hooked on building your own arcade with multiple units, instead of having a single cabinet with all the trimmings.

Octo's talking about the countercades, though, and as far as I know AtGames doesn't really have anything comparable. I've never touched an Arcade1Up myself, but I've seen reviews of them on YouTube and they seem to generally get the job done. The buttons and sticks aren't top quality, but you can replace them yourself if it's something you really care about. Out of curiosity, which one were you thinking of getting? You should try to get in touch with Michael B the Game Genie, he's bought a bunch of Arcade1Ups and he's in Nfld to boot.

The only ones immediately accessible are the Pac-Man and Ms. Pacman units (and a selection of the smaller handheld ones). And of those two, Ms. Pac-Man has more appeal.

I'm presuming the myArcade units aren't worth commenting on, as they appear to largel be using the NES ports instead of arcades, and they look pretty shoddy in general.

Also, I haven't lived in Newfoundland for a decade so there's two provinces and a lot of water separating us.

Nope, the smaller AtGames units are all headless, so you'd have to provide your own monitor. An equivalent could be the NeoGeo MVSX, but they're still double the price of the single game countercade units.

One of my issues with Arcade1up is supply, since they do small runs of everything, and are more focused on getting newer ones out to sell to their established base than new runs of the back catalog. The Pac-Man units that I've seen all go for over retail cost because of reseller markup.

I just picked up the AtGames Legends Gamer Mini, and I like it so far. You get a "hockey puck" to hook to your TV, and the selection of games is eclectic, but not bad at all for what I paid ($61.25 at GameStop, although the price is back up now). But the main attraction is the stick, and so far it feels really solid. I like that the buttons have some resistance - it's not like my WWE Brawl Stick that has the Sanwa knockoffs that are super sensitive. And you can use the stick on PC or MiSTer, which is great for my use case.

It should also be noted that you can install CoinOpsX on the AtGames unit and "bring your own games". So you can load it down with far more than it comes with if you're not averse to some legal dubiousness (or own the games you put on there in some form already, like through a Neo Geo collection).

I feel like if I were going to drop the cash, I'd go Legends Ultimate over the Arcade1UP cabs just for sheer versatility like @John says.

I haven't used my Legends Gamer Pro in months, but I have a dreadfully short attention span and the damn thing is huge. I might be more inclined to use it if the stupid trackball worked properly. I was encouraged to install plastic shims in it, but that's where the problems started. Now it rolls fine along the X-axis, but not the Y, which is aggravating. I'll probably have to take it apart again, and believe me, that's no fun at all.

I almost bought one of those back when Sam's Club put them on sale for like $90-100. But I can definitely see it being huge - even the Mini is, well, not very "mini". It's a chonky boy for sure.

I have so much stuff that I can play (and stuff that I still order, despite having so much to play) that I'm all over the place in terms of what I play. I've got several Limited Run and Playasia releases that I've barely touched! I bought some Switch games around Black Friday last year and I still haven't played them (Fire Emblem and Luigi's Mansion 3).

Hey so I'm trying to add a few extra games to my SNES Classic. I've got quite a few stock games working, no big, but I am having a hard time getting a fan translation patched Final Fantasy II running. I would really like to try Namingway Edition or Project II, but I've not had luck getting either to work. Either the system throws an error or it just loads back to game selection.

I am using Hakchi2 ce to mod the system. I presume it is having issues with the modded rom? I'd prefer to use as light of a touch when modding the system as possible, I really don't want to install other emulators on it.

Not sure, but here's a thread on someone getting the Namingway version working:
There's also an SFROM mega pack in an archive that appears to have it in there, so I would assume that would work. It's probably something weird with that version of the patched ROM, though, or it's just not making the jump to the system correctly.

I see that the Neo Geo Pro Max has 20 games built in and 20 more are “unlockable”, and collectively that’s a pretty good selection (between that and the NG Mini International, nearly my entire Neo Geo needs are met).

Are those games hard to unlock or were they restricted behind firmware updates or what? I couldn’t find any indication in all the reviews I read.

For the Pro, unlocking instructions are here.

It looks fairly easy.

I wasn't sure if he was referencing the joystick or the cabinet that was released about a year later.

The Neo Geo stuff is needlessly confusing. I know there are unlocks on the joystick, no idea about the big cabinet.

Does anyone know if there's a mod, or a replacement part, or whatever, to make a Japanese Super Famicom accept North American SNES games? There's this on Etsy, but I was hoping for something a little cheaper than $40 lol

This is one of those things where I'm not even sure what to google.

You did have a comedy of errors there, wow lol. I guess that's why it's difficult to google, it's the opposite of what most English speakers are looking for...

I'm not dropping that much money on an aftermarket shell, though. Worst case scenario I file down the cartridge slot (I do have a dremel, now), or just buy one of those pass throughs.

Okay so I have three systems that will be outputting S-video to my Retrotink 2x mini, and I was wondering what everybody here does so they don't have to get behind their TV every time they want to switch systems. I don't want to buy two more Retrotinks, nor do I want to mod my consoles (a Saturn, SNES, and N64) to output HDMI, since that'd be expensive and prone to failure on my part. Is there a good switcher that accepts multiple S-video inputs that I'm unaware of?

My A/V enthusiast friend pointed me to Shinybow's website, where they currently have four different s-video switcher models for sale. Personally I think the SB-5430 Shinybow looks good; it's a 4-input/2-output switch with push-button input selection and an IR remote. There's also the SB-5425 auto-switcher, which is slightly less expensive and would eliminate the need to press any buttons. None of these switchers are particularly cheap, though.

Wow, you're not kidding! Good for the Christmas gift list, though, particularly that $124 one... And it has enough inputs that I'd be good to connect one more system, too. Nice! Thank you! I'd never heard of Shinybow lol

You're welcome! Gotta spread the good word about Shinybow and their excellent legacy A/V equipment.

I have one of their component splitters and it is a big ol' metal slab (it also comes in a rack-mount version). You could probably drop this thing from a third story window and continue using it without any problems.
