What's Shenmue?
(he/him/his)
With Mega Man X cleared, I decided to follow it with Maverick Hunter X, which I thought would make for an amusing compare/contrast (and because I actually own it but never bothered to actually play it).

Given its reputation, I was expecting to make a snarky post about it, but… honestly, I think MHX is unfairly maligned. It's a reasonably good facsimile of the original that actually makes some smart changes: shuffling the locations of the armour parts isn't just a way to trip up veterans, it encourages a different route through the game that actually works in the game's favour. Now, there isn't really a compelling reason to play this instead of the original, and if I ever get an itch for X's first outing I'm just going to go back to the SNES one, but it's not the literal slap in the face I was lead to believe.

That's another ten for the pile, if it counts!

Did I already add your first play through to the pile or do I add 20? Either way, it counts.

I also never heard anyone complain about MHX to my memory; it played things a bit safer than Powered Up, as far as remakes go, but it’s still head and shoulders above most of the series.

Sorry, yeah, I mentioned my MMX play earlier in the thread and it was counted already. So my MHX play just brings our total to 292.

As for MHX's reception, I guess it depends on what circles we ran in, but I remember it being viciously hated, treated as an absolute massacre of a classic. The positive-if-muted reception you witnessed makes a lot more sense to me!

Maverick Hunter X is great! I never understand why people get mad at remakes... they're new games! The old ones still exist!!

8, unless you played through it twice in a row; Boss Rush rematchs don't count.

Now, you better start booting some guys into holes because we're at 300!

I also have no memory of MHX being hated. It was one of the first PSP games I got (along with Powered Up!), and always liked it. I did a Vile playthrough for Megamas 2018, and that's pretty fun! I recommend it.

Discovered today that PureSabe, the hacker behind Rockman 4 Minus Infinity, released a new hack on Halloween this year called Rockman 7 EP. If you're familiar with Minus Infinity you know it's one of the Goats of the MM hacking scene and EP is just as technically impressive and creatively rich. Highlights:

  • If you collect life or weapon powerups when at your max it will overflow into secondary bars that slowly drain. Little bonus energy that feels good to have.

  • Ridable vehicles! About half the stages have something you jump in and ride around on.

  • Turbo Man's weapon, Self Burning. By overheating Mega Man turns the tables and deals contact damage to enemies. Trade off is you're still vulnerable to projectiles and can't fire while it's active. Feels like it belongs in the pantheon of great shield weapons. Also it heats water to boiling and damages any enemies in that pool. That's a neat bit of programing.

  • The game does a lot of neat stuff with water mechanics in fact. There are several different types of water with different effects like some green goo in Shade Man's stage that slowly turns Mega Man into a zombie.

  • Extended homages to Castlevania and Gradius. Capcom and Konami are basically the same company after all.

  • Spring Man's stage is wonderfully clever.

  • Extended visit to the Robot Museum.

  • In that mode, the refights are in a set order with no breaks in between. Think of Actraiser's boss rush. Very frantic!

  • Who know Mega Man's friends were such badass once they join the fray?

  • Showstopper Wily stages, but very difficult. This is to a point as the game gives out E-Tanks like candy, but tracks how many you use. Each one used costs Dr. Light something like a hundred thousand yen and at the end you get to see how much your antics cost him. EP is an easy game to tank through and see the sights, but is designed for low score runs. Additionally it tracks your time in each stage. How courteous to speedrunners!

  • Capsule is a crazy idea that I feel people will either will love or hate. I thought it was a great idea but also something of a puzzler and also what some might call "excessive."
We all have our excessess I suppose. I don't intended when starting these posts to go on for so long, I just find these games so interesting to think about. Mega Man as score run type of game, whoda'thunk? I think it's Neat.

8 more masters plus a certain someone you know who.

Just finished the original Mega Man. Took me longer than expected because I always screw up something. Died a couple of times against the Yellow Devil, but finally got through (no pause trick!), but the boss rush at the end is what really gets me. It usually comes down to Guts Man behaving... and sometimes, he just doesn't. So that's seven more done and dusted.

Finished off MM6 as a little late night snack. Another 8 on the pile.

They had one chance to fix Boomer Kuwanger's name, and they changed it to...Boomerang Kuwanger.

Keeping the Kuwanger was a fucking genius decision. I love it.

Also, MM5 done. 8 robots, plus a dark man down the hatch. (Or, 4 dark man's? Up to you Octo!)

7, 8, and 9 are done. 7 and 8 were basically sleepwalks, 9 I only played twice before this time and it reminded me how brutally unfair it was in certain spots, in an unfun way. Still, dead robutts is dead robutts.
