7 has the highest percentage of talking dogs, though.

That’s not something to dismiss out of hand.

Okay, so now I’m fixated on this...

Off the top of my head, the only FF games with Talking Dogs are 5 and 7. And I’m willing to assume there are some in 9, due to ambiguity with some of the critter-man NPCs. Never been clear on whether Lone Wolf from 6 was an actual dog man or just a guy wearing a dog as a hat, like Kraven the Hunter. Give it the benefit of the doubt though.

Of those games, only 7 had a playable Talking Dog, whereas 5 had a number of wolf men as NPCs, and 6s lone wolf was irrelevant enough that it’s not unreasonable thatyou could play through the entire game without knowing he was in it. So that’s a point in 7s favour.

However, Red XIII ultimately manages to have the least connection to the plot of the game, to the point that the optional secret characters have a far stronger connection to the story, and he’s far below the animatronic cat. In comparison, the Wolfman from 5 (whose name i regrettably can’t think of) was one of the previous generation of Light Warriors and is considered one of the greatest heroes his world ever produced.

So while 7 has the most playable talking dogs in the franchise, 5 actually has better Talking Dog representation.

If Red XIII is a cat, Kimahri is also a cat. What's the talking cat ratio in FF?

(I've always read Red XIII as a wolf.)

Red XIII self-identifies as a labrat dog. Unclear if he's avoiding mentioning being a cat on purpose or if he is in fact closer related to rats.

Lemme know if I miss any, as I'm sure I'm going to. Also; not counting anything that counts as talking *monsters* since that's a whole other ball of wax

FF1: Talking bats
FF2: There's a man who talks to beavers, which is a kind of borderline example
FF3: Nothing I can think of
FF4: Talking Frogs and Pigs inhabit Agate
FF5: Wolfmen and a turtle
FF6: Lone Wolf and Possibly Ultros (not sure if he counts as Octopus or Monster)
FF7: Red XIII and his tribe of Dogs (or possibly lions, I guess)
FF8: Do Moombas talk? I count them as being "Cat Enough"
FF9: Clear winner; nearly every city has a number of Talking Animals thanks to most of the world being Varmints
FF10: Talking Cats thanks to Kimhari
FF11: Way Too Many Cats
FF12: Bunny, Frog(?) and Lizard people abound
FF13: Nothing that I can think of
FF14: Innumerable Cats, Again
FF15: Didn't play that far, no idea
FFT: Lots of talking monsters, but no Regular Ass Animals to my recollection
FFTA: See FF12
FFTA2: See above

So more cats than dogs, but not by a huge margin if you only count one per title

FF12 also has bird people, and... whatever the Garif are.

Pretty sure XV is a human-only club. Unless you count Carbuncle, who's telepathic, and sadly relegated to a tech demo and a limited-time event from 2017.

And a tutorial.

FF15's Final Fantasy XIV event did have a Mi'qote NPC but everything else is basically in talking monster territory. 'Cept for the Terra Wars event, but I wouldn't really consider a nondescript humanoid shaped white blob that only ever says "Hiso" a talking animal.

Also if the Terra Wars event's still playable...Don't. Felt like I wasted a half hour of my life for a sword I will never use.

That part was neat, but the crossover is mostly a cookie cutter Boy Meets Girl arc squeezed into a half-hour of cutscene exposition, linear faffing about, Quick Time Events, and all of three fights. Two are just "What if existing FFXV foes but stone textures" and the one original fight is an evil clone of the girl you were bonding with.

Like, I get there probably wasn't much of a budget for this, but it felt like it did a disservice to both properties involved. Terra Battle (may it rest in peace) had some pretty cool lore stuff for a game that was basically "Move squares to kill other squares".

Not that the FF14 crossover was much better, but alternate outfits for the boys were neat and if you want to you have the option to bash your head against the Garuda fight repeatedly MMO-style for gear.

I don’t think they were the Nu Mou, unless they got a drastic redesign and rename between FFTA and 12, there were big ol froggy guys whose names I can’t recall right now in 12 and A2

Bangaa are the floppy-eared raptors.

Nu Mou are the light-half of the Skeksis so they should be really getting back to The Dark Crystal.

Seeq are Gamorrean Guards that got lost in the wrong Star Wars episode.

@WildcatJF FFV has Faris, canonically androgynous, and I personally have headcanoned as gender fluid. (Though she always presents masc)

Now that I'm no longer pretending to be a baddie out of my Enemy Contest, I did try out FFV and was digging it way more than I usually do with the series. Faris seems super cool already and I was getting that vibe too. I just need to find a better way to play my GBA cart than my busted OG DS lol.

Faris is easily in the running for being my favourite FF character.

Being BFFs with a giant lightning-breathing Loch Ness Monster who can carry your pirate ship on her back is probably cooler than Setzer's dirigibles.

Did I mention the pirate part.

And that her crew is 100% behind Faris even after the truth came out and they might have known all along anyway.

She is also a princess but eschews monarchy / royalty.

Pirates are highly democratic, historically. Faris is better than a princess, she's an elected official.
