(but seriously, one detail I loved about FFX is that only some characters could participate in underwater battles, a nice integration of narrative and mechanics making it clear that underwater brawling is not an universal skill)

Oh, yeah, no, it was definitely a matter of narrative integration. It certainly wasn't because three animators died attempting to merely conceptualize how Lulu's hair/weapon/beltpocalypse would work in a floating/swimming environment. That was just a coincidence.

(But seriously, Final Fantasy 10-1.5 confirms that "super swim" is an ability that can be learned, and Yuna is attempting to pick it up during her time off from heroing. Presumably Lulu and Auron were never into it.)

Yuna and Auron would all have a lot of trouble underwater, what with their long, flowing garments and all.

Lulu doesn't have that problem. Lulu just sinks.

You would think for how much time in the water the characters spend they would wear different kinds of clothes. Tidus’ shoes must be nightmare to walk in after thirty minutes underwater.

There are a fair bit of professional American voice actors in this game. Tara Strong as Rikku. John Dimaggio as Wakka. Gregg “Odie/Cornfed/Grimlock“ Berger as Jecht. Square paid some money for this.

It kind of bugs me that Rikku needs special gear to fight and maneuver underwater at the start of the game, but later she doesn’t.

I also think her aqua suit looks cooler than her regular outfit so I may just be bitter about that

She needs special gear because Square had finally discovered that every "playable character reveal" since 1988 had been spoiled by any old rube reading the instruction booklet before playing the game. Their only choice was to utilize disguises to obfuscate obvious later party members, lest they accidentally dominate their technically initial appearances. This came to a head in Final Fantasy 13, when Fang spends like 20% of the game in the background wearing a McGruff the Crime Dog costume. And that's why games don't come with manuals anymore.

I've never played 13 so for the love of dog please tell me this is a real thing (that was happening.)

It's not. Fang is actually somewhat of an exception among the playable characters in the XIII games in that her character model and outward presentation are never altered to any degree despite continuing appearances across the trilogy (Sazh is the other one). In the first game she's the last party member formally introduced and made playable, and for a good long while you only see anonymous glimpses of her from other characters' perspectives, of uncertain motive and allegiance as far as they know (and what Vanille in contrast to the others knows she won't say). It's some neat parallelism to Kain's established archetype as far as Dragoons go.

Pretty sure only gods can deifact nethicite; you've gotta manufact it like the rest of us plebs.

New, "Final" trailer for FF7R PS5 port. Weird to have a PS5 trailer for the game that isn't in 4K but w/e.

The first half of the trailer is just look at shiny new graphical updates. The back half of it though is new Yuffie stuff and might be spoilery to some of ya, so just a warning.

Also, tfw Fort Condor minigame 😤

So my understanding is that if I barely got to the train graveyard in FF7Re, and wasn't really feeling it, I might as well wait for this version, start over, and see if it catches my interest better?

(If they fix the Hell House fight it would definitely eliminate half of my apathy right there.)

It's so precious that they're still trying to make Weiss and Nero (and probably the rest of Dirge's characters and lore) a thing.

There's supposed to be an ability to transfer your save progress from the PS4 version to PS5 version, so you could just keep going from where you are.

Just remember the PS5 upgrade doesn't apply to the PS+ version.

I got FF7R in physical for Christmas, so I've been waiting for the PS5 version to be out. Let's hope RL gives me enough time to play it in June (yes, the same RL that kept me from trying it from Christmas until the PS5 reveal)

How about that Blitzball, eh? It took me a second attempt, but I managed to win the first Blitzball game in double overtime, 2 - 1. Is this a big part of the game going forward, ‘cause that was really tough for the first time?

I did not expect to hear Tom Kenny as the main Blitz commentator. FFX came out at a strange time in JRPG’s, I suppose.

It's totally optional from this part on unless you want Wakka's ultimate weapon in which case it is hyper-mandatory

The first game is absurdly hard for basically no reason. The Luca Goers are going to be a speedbump of a team for the rest of the game, more or less. (It's the Al Bhed Psyches you need to watch out for. Y'know, the ones who couldn't win the tourney unless they cheated.)

Both Wakka's best weapon and his best limit break are earned through a random number of ten-minute Blitzball games.

(Which, in my experience, is about 70 or so. I had to desaturate my TV back in 2001 when I first played FFX, to avoid burning a blue hue into the screen. My second time around, I started playing IMMEDIATELY and then did two or three matches at every new Save Point.)

From what little I know of FF X, I may not go for the super weapons. It sounds like a major commitment. I still may try a few rounds of B-ball every so often. It was interesting.

I like some of the small world building so far. The Blitzball victory sign gaining religious meaning over time seems like something that would be very possible. Yuna telling Tidus that most settlements are very small due to Sin attacking large groups of people, except for Luca, which is still under an enormous threat from Sin, but people gotta have their sports!

You don't need to spend hours in mini-games to get the Ultimate Weapons when you can spend hours grinding for materials to forge your own!

yea you can make weapons that rival the ultimate weapon comps, and sometimes that's better because the ultimate weapons are designed around sphere paths that you may not take in the expert version! I had Wakka as my healer/white mage type and lulu as my main physical damage dealer, so I had two weapons that are largely focused on constantly building overdrives when the overdrives were nearly pointless for them both... sigh

also, yuna and aurons weapons are pretty easy/quick to get, really. rikku's isn't bad either.

The only real benefit of Ultimate Weapons which can't be duplicated by crafting is automatic Break Damage Limit on selected Aeons. And I think the Celestial Weapons have a natural BDL themselves? But if you craft a weapon that consistently hits 9999s, you don't need either of those unless you want to fight the superbosses, which itself isn't all that advisable anyway.

I never felt that the Celestial Weapons were too difficult to get in FFX. Having said that, I've never gotten Wakka's because Blitzball is the absolute worst and I refuse to play even a second more of it than what's absolutely necessary. Worst mini-game in a Final Fantasy by a country mile, and, yes, I've played Tetra Master.

yea they all have BDL. I think each weapon is:
BDL
Triple Overdrive
two random skills that are mostly like, 1MP or counters or something.

but also celestial weapons have some damage modifiers that aren't possible to craft(I think?) and I don't think are really mentioned anywhere in the game. Auron's has as attack damage buff as HP goes down for example. I don't know what all of them are but i think each weapon has something like that.

If you really care about Wakka’s Celestial Weapon or final Overdrive there are guides for scum-saving the blitzball rewards that can get it down to an hour or two.

Depending on your specific tolerances this may be less annoying than some of the other weapon requirements, like dodging lightning bolts, catching butterflies or racing chocobos.
