Using the Game Gear versions of the games which have Master System versions is baffling. Would the emulator even need to be that different?

I’m a sucker for Tails Adventure, though, so…

Short answer, no. The big thing you'd need to handle is different SMS and GG hardware palettes and some of the oddities with the way the SMS pause button works (GG pause is a normal button, SMS pause is more like a hardware interrupt). Compared to the ground work of getting a GG emulator coded in the first place, neither of these is very difficult. Hell, over half the games would run with little-to-no issue at the SMS resolution (I mean, you'd still have Sonic fixed to the GG screen width in stuff like boss battles unless you changed the game code, but that's a minor issue).

Outside of Sonic 1 and maybe 2, though, I do think the GG versions are actually the superior releases, as they're a bit more polished up and tend to look and sound just a little bit nicer.

It's funny we've got the islands for Spinball and 3D Blast and yet we only get the GG port of the former and the music of the latter, though I suppose they've been playable on modern systems for about half a decade now

Chaos is much better on Master System, imo - the increased resolution just makes the game that much less frustrating to play. Same goes for Sonic 1 and 2, yeah.

I guess I should be clearer -- I do own a copy of Chaos for SMS but the music is a little rougher and I don't like, for example, the title screen:

By the time the GG game came out they were able to successfully crib from the finalized Sonic 2 title screen. (Chaos SMS came out a month before Sonic 2 Genesis; presumably they went with the rather, uh, stylized title screen because they didn't want to reuse the Sonic 2 beta screen. Final title screen wasn't implemented until after SMS version came out.)

My main issue with GG Chaos specifically is that in localizing it from Japanese S&T they stripped out a lot of ring locations from boss acts, making them more annoying to play. Most of the bosses were a little too easy in the SMS version due to all that extra space, and I think they over-corrected just a little bit, as it's otherwise not a very difficult game.

Eh? It's on the console itself rather than the controllers, but it's not "a hardware interrupt." Plenty of SMS games do the whole pause menu thing and have it bring up an inventory screen or whatever.

I mean in terms of how the software has to handle it -- not 'hardware interrupt' in the sense that it halts the system or something, I mean 'hardware interrupt' in the sense of the CPU being made to jump to a specific part of the ROM when pressed, rather than the software telling the CPU to check the bus for controller state. There's a reason that games backported to SMS usually wind up with really weird control schemes.

There's two new challenge modes, a jukebox mode, and a bunch of new doodads to collect to fill it out, and some QOL improvements, like the ability to level up way faster at the old rock guys.

So no big changes, but several appreciated little ones.

Kudos to Sega for realizing that the best approach to April Fools’ is to actually make a ridiculous thing, not just lie through your teeth. The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is free on Steam:

I’m not going to be able to play it until Monday, but I’m excited, particularly as a Tails stan.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is genuinely delightful. Best April Fools Day "Prank" I've ever seen.

IT LOOKS... GOOD!!!

But I have CONCERNS about exactly how much co-op should be in 2D sonic.

Ah who the fuck am I kidding it's Sonic Classic Heroes 2.

Sure, why not? I don't know that I love what I've seen, but I'm also not certain that I fully understand what I've seen. Kind of jarring to announce this when Origins Plus is still in the pipeline but I thought Generations and, hell, Forces both did the 2D classic Sonic thing pretty well so this should be at least good

I kinda wish 2D Sonic games were always pixel art, and 3D Sonic pushed the graphical envelope. Still, this is a better art style than Sonic 4, and looks like it could be fun.

I am intrigued as to how 4 player Sonic would work! Also fuzzy jellyfish times. Overally it was kind of hard for me to follow what is interactable on the screen or not though, it's a bit busy.

the uncut footage I've seen looks fun. I think the trailer front loaded a lot of boost shit but the physics seem to be on point. I mean, who am I kidding, I'll play it.

it's kind of a laugh that they're saying it won't recycle locations when it's very clear that it will, and does; in spirit if not in exact name, etc.

They just mean they'll have an expy of Green Hill (ala Emerald Hill, Angel Island, Seaside Hill, etc.) instead of the actual dang Green Hill. Which is fine 'cuz we've been seeing way too much of Green Hill (also Chemical Plant) lately.

Which works for me.

Appealing to nostalgia is great and all, but as the saying goes, "how can we miss you if you won't go away?"

I don't know what they did to screw it up but they get reasonable-looking colors for Amy in the Origins Sonic 2 character select menu and then in game she's been given the opticwhite treatment
