I don’t really care if you like Chaotix, it just means you like something I think is unbelievably boring. I can’t imagine what it is you get out of it. If it’s just “wow look at/listen to that” then more power to you, but that is a deeply dull game to me.

I want to pick up Sonic X Shadow Generations and am choosing between Xbox and Switch. Is slowdown on the Switch an issue? I'd rather have good performance for a Sonic game than portability if I have to balance those two. Also I have a save from the original Sonic Generations on the Xbox if there's any unlocks or bonuses.

i haven't heard of any unlocks or bonuses, but since my old save data for it was inexplicably wiped, I can't say firsthand.

I don't remember experiencing any huge performance issues in the Switch version, but I think it runs at 30fps like the original 360/PS3 versions (or maybe that was just one of them, I forget) did.

There are longer load times on Switch, and I noticed that picture quality/textures could seem a little weird sometimes.

Basically, Switch version isn't bad, imo, but the Series X version ran better overall when I played them.

I played a few levels of Sonic Colors: Ultimate because it's free this month on PS+.

On some of these levels, I reach a big ring just about 30 seconds in. I run into the ring and the level finishes. The timing of it seems too quick, and I think I see stuff beyond the ring. What's going on? Am I supposed to find an alternate route? Or jump over it? Or is the level simply that short?

IIRC, the levels are shorter, but there are more of them.

If you're interested in the Sonic Racing Crossworlds game that comes out soon, there's a free network test this weekend where you can try the game. Seems to be available on basically all platforms.
Network test seems pretty fun! Enjoyed my time with it, sadly ran into issues with auto acceleration not working in online mode for some reason so I can’t play much sadly, had fun though! Reported the bug to sega support, and this didn’t exist in the previous test so im hoping it’s fixed soon.

Overall opinion is that I think this is a huge step up above the previous private test, tons of improvement to sense of speed, handling, and overall game balancing. Not sure if I’ll pick it up at launch but would be happy to buy it on sale a few months after. Had a few hours of enjoyment out of it, and im excited to see what the other tracks are, and if we see even more sega crossover tracks beyond Space Harrier (I think?)

I would like to offer a formal apology to @madhair60 for my past opinions on Sonic CD*.

It has fully clicked with me now. I'd beaten it a few times, but that Retronauts (which I relistened to a few days back) combined with actually using my Sega CD and following your oft-suggested way to play (chill. Explore. Find stuff. Enjoy the art, enjoy the music. Don't worry about the ending), I have come to regard Sonic CD as among the best in the series. It is just a fucking treat. I beat it a couple days ago by finding all the robot generators, which I'd done before. I beat it by just doing whatever in the levels themselves after that, getting all the Time Stones. And just now, I played through it just exploring the Bad Future of each zone, which I'd never done before - I had messed about with the Good Futures, a little, but there were a few Bad Futures in there that I don't even think I'd seen before. They might have the coolest art in the game! Was just an utter delight to just poke around in while listening to the music (US version this time, although the Time Stone playthrough I mentioned earlier was via a burned EU 60hz patched disc I made with the Japanese soundtrack). I still have an EU/Japanese playthrough to do to hear the Sonic Team music for the Bad Futures! Yay!

I also didn't even know the D.A. Garden existed, so I did the Time Trials to unlock whatever I could with roughly a cumulative 26 minute rank (which sucks, I'm sure, but I dunno man I go in loops in Stardust Speedway and get lost in the first level of Metallic Madness all the time). I'm glad you pointed it out on the podcast, it's neat! I don't think I'd have ever messed about with Time Trial, really, had I not known there was actually stuff to unlock (although having done it now, it is a fun way to play through the levels again).

A year ago, I would have unironically said I liked Knuckles' Chaotix more than Sonic CD. I still love Chaotix, but Sonic CD is easily the better game, something I'd never thought I'd say. Besides whatever they've hidden in those Bad Futures, I think I still prefer the US soundtrack, but they both are amazingly good in their own ways.

*tongue firmly in cheek, but also kind of not really, I was a hater

The only thing I don't love about CD is that I'm not good enough to unlock the free play mode for the bonus stages. I just adore those.

Well, as I do most of the game, but I just wish I could load those up and play whenever I want, particularly on the newer versions.

Hate that they're basically gatekept behind a speedrun.

I don't know if this is considered heresy in the fandom or something, but I think Sega CD with a metroid-style automap and a Super Mario World-esque casual stage select (Oh, I missed an "exit", let me come back to that later) would improve the game gigantically. When I played through Sega CD as an adult with an online map, it was a totally different experience from when I hit it in my younger years.

How do you unlock those? I've gotten under 25 minutes now -

And I don't know how to access them. Do I have to go even faster? Or was that added for future ports? The above are all on original Sega CD hardware...

I think you have to complete all the time attack stages in a total time of 30'21''05 or less, then press left on the title screen for the option.

This must just be in later ports, because I'm under 25 minutes and there is no special stage select anywhere, including on the main menu to the left. Ah well.

I just sat down and played through Sonic Superstars as Sonic. The main levels are fine - some, even, are really cool - but the bosses are awful. I remember madhair saying somewhere that the bosses in Mania are slogs, and while I agree with that to an extent, the bosses in Superstars are infinitely long. They suck so bad, especially the final boss. Sheesh.

Yeah, they start off well enough, but by the end...

I don't remember Mania's being too bad. But Sonic 4's...

The problem, for me, is when you can't hit Eggman. In the Genesis games, you're usually able to deal as many hits as your level of skill will allow in a given amount of time, and he moves into his next pattern of attack when he wants to, not just because you dealt him a blow.

But most newer games seem to want to really drag it out, one hit at a time, then move on to the next sequence.

Superstars expects you to use Emerald Powers to trivialise bosses (or sections of bosses), but on the first playthrough most of them are absolutely a slog, yes.

On further playthroughs this is less of an issue, but still an issue. I don't really mind the final boss being especially cruel, given it is the final boss. Well, except for the "true final boss", which is hideous shit fit only for the dead.

The biggest surprise about superstars for me was how it wasn't very good for couch co-op at all.

I thought that was the whole point of the game!
