During the LP proper? Occasionally, I suppose. I could at least comment on it in general. You'll be unsurprised to learn that a lot of the dialogue is condensed down in the US version, or outright changed. As was Square's deal at the time, there's generally a pretty somber and serious tone to the game's script in the original (broken up by the occasional bits of levity). It's been quite a while since I've properly played SD2 instead of SoM, so I may well have to do a parallel play of the game while I go through SoM to make sure I don't mis-remember when pointing out script differences.

レツプレー聖剣伝説2!
So yeah, I may as well showcase a bit of the Japanese version as well. Starting with the title screen crawl. THE SWORD REVEALED THE POWER OF ITS TRUE NATURE TO RETRIEVE THE PEACE. EXCALIBUR, KUSANAGI, AND ALL THE OTHER SWORDS TALKED IN MYTH, LEGEND, AND SAGA... PEOPLE NAMED THOSE SWORDS IN MANY WAYS. BUT... THEY ALL MEANT ONE THING. THE ONE AND ONLY... THE SWORD OF MANA. Yes, it was originally in English and completely different. Not great English, of course, which is probably why it was rewritten, but there you have it. The menu is predictably similar, but the naming screen is completely different. Lots of characters, even English ones! Ah, right, most of my readers can't read Japanese. So I'll provide some translations for these shots. DISCLAIMER: These are on-the-fly seat-of-my-pants translations, so they're not guaranteed to be 100% accurate or 100% localized! I'll try for a reasonable amount of both. Long ago... Mana's power was harnessed by civilization, and the world flourished. Ultimately, mankind began to battle over control of Mana's power. The Mana Fortress was summoned, a vessel of the Titans. However, this excessive power enraged the gods, and so they sent the God-Beasts to earth. A terrible battle erupted between the Fortress and the God-Beasts. The world was engulfed in flames, and the power of Mana disappeared from the earth. At this time, a hero wielding the holy sword emerged, and brought down the Fortress. It was lost to man and God-Beast alike. Though the cause of the conflict was forgotten by civilization, the world was at peace once more... Time flows on... And history repeats... As you can see, the introduction got quite a lot of attention and was kept pretty true to the original script. Will this attention to detail keep up throughout? Well, Woolsey himself said "no", so I guess we'll find out as the LP continues! |
#46
Another noteworthy difference is that the title image is really zoomed-in in the American version, while the Japanese version shows off more of that beautiful Hiroo Isono art.
As for the narration, the mention of "God-Beasts" makes that series of bosses in SD3 especially resonant in retrospect. |

The God-Beasts in SD3 are in fact the same God-Beasts mentioned in SD2's introduction. They're also mentioned in Legend of Mana, but the localization team decided to call them Flammies for some reason. Fun Fact: "Sword of Mana" is in fact the most appropriate translation of the game series' overarching title to date. The title screen there calls the legendary blade the Sword of Mana, but in-game it's only ever referred to as the seiken (holy sword). Meaning that "Sword of Mana" and "holy sword" are in fact synonymous terms. The most complete translation would be "Legend of the Sword of Mana", though that's quite a mouthful. |

Part of me will always hope that somewhere there exists a copy of the original Play Station version of this game, but I don't even know how close to complete it was before being chopped down. This is gonna take some explaining to the elder, methinks. Amazingly, despite being about as sharp as a SNES controller's edge, the sword cuts through the grasses just fine! It's just chillin'. Secret of Mana's combat is a sort of strange hybrid of turn-based and real-time, with more emphasis on real-time. You can attack when your action gauge is at 100% and do full damage, or swing like mad when it's not and do about 1/32nd as much damage as you would from a full-power strike. Enemies can and often do drop items, as seen here. The item limit's only 4 of any given type, however, so items are not something you want to count on! As you fight with a given weapon (yes, this game has more than just a sword to fight with; quite a lot more!), your skill with that weapon goes up. There's a cap on how much skill you can get for a weapon that's derived from something we'll learn more about later. You can hold down the attack button to charge up your attack level and use a stronger blow. This is generally less effective than just attacking regularly, but at times it comes in handy. What a silly critical hit message! And finally, you get experience and level up just like any other traditional RPG. That covers gameplay mechanics for now, so let's continue on with the plot! |
