The MCU's taking a week off before The Falcon & The Winter Soldier next Friday, but there's a fun WandaVision making-of special up on D+ today. It's under "Assembled" in the MCU section, which I guess will be a series of similar specials for the shows and movies going forward.

I enjoyed the story of Teyonah Parris having no idea what she was even auditioning for, under Marvel's typical veil of secrecy. "Congratulations, you got the part!" "Great! What part is it???"

I understand why they did it, but Blueberry Vision will haunt my nightmares.

I enjoyed the segment about the opening theme compositions, and Paul Bettany's origin story as the voice of Jarvis, but Kat Dennings deserved a longer interview.

I'm watching Wondavision. Have watched the first four episodes, at the moment. I like it a lot, but I really wished we had just stayed inside sitcom-town. Just give me more and more bits of weird things happening, I don't care about the outside world. During episode 4, I was always thinking "can we go back to Wanda?". That episode felt like typical Marvel stuff, while the first three episodes felt so much like something fresh and interesting. Maybe that's just me, really enjoying deconstruction of sitcoms, but the first three episodes have such a nice, weird vibe, and I want more of that. I guess we are going to Marvel it all up, as we go along? For now, I'm very much into what I'm watching.

I really, really liked WandaVision.

The final conflict having some climactic action but ultimately being solved by a conversation was what really sealed it for me. When Copy Vision disengaged, I was worried the show would take the easy way out by bringing her and Wanda together instead of letting her finally face her grief. The show was ultimately about two women coming to grips with their grief in different ways, and I really liked that. The best MCU material has very strong underlying themes, and I think WandaVision nailed that aspect.

And we're back with full-on Marvel shenenigans with TF&TWS 1. I appreciate how cognizant all the post-Endgame writers are of the total mess the Blip was, and how we continue to explore the ramifications at the macro and personal levels. As a narrative, this episode focuses hard on letting us know what's become of Sam and Bucky after the movies, which is fine, but, ironically, it wants to show us so much of what's become of them that sometimes it feels unfocused. And I did have a needle-scratch moment when Sam's intel guy described the Flag Smashers' goal of "a world without borders" as something inherently and unquestionably bad, without the show pausing to explore the nuances in such a hyper-charged political statement.

I liked Rhodey's cameo. I hope he shows up more often. I also really did appreciate the much more (ahem) grounded issues Sam has to deal with--one never stops to think about non-millionnaire superheroes balancing their finances, but here we go.

I was kinda disappointed the New Guy wasn't called USAgent :p

Also calling it now, the loans clerk is totally Mr. Sinister and that's how the MCU introduces Rom the Space Knight, but not before revealing that Bucky's neighbor is really an Elder of the Universe. ScreenCrush, I'm ready for my YT video.

I have seen people say that Marvel didn't take the ramifications of the blip seriously but that was back when the only post-Endgame release was Far from Home, and those movies are comedies.

Walker was Captain America before he was US Agent in the comics, too.

I enjoyed the episode mostly, although to be honest it dragged a bit for me. I was hoping for more forward movement in the story if there's only six episodes.

First episode was fine, and actually better than I expected, but still a pretty hard meh. Mostly the same problem I had with Wanda and Vision tbh. These are sidekicks and/or b-listers who the movies previously have barely spent much time characterizing into characters I care about. It's great to finally give them this much characterization, but I can't help but feel like it's a little too late for me to truly care. Especially now that they're being slotted in as substitutes to the characters I cared a lot more for. It's like DS9/VOY syndrome back in the day all over again, where these things things are being offered up as substitutes/sequels and all I want is to go hang out with TNG some more. At least now I'm cognizant of those feelings and can attempt to put them aside.

I also have a whole host of problems with Falcon as a character as well, but I assume most of my problems/questions can be handwaved with 'Rule of Cool', editorial mandates, or other such nonsense.

They didn’t call mysterious New Cap the USAgent, but... c’mon now. That’s almost definitely John.

Did Red Wing show up in the movies? I mainly remember Sam inexplicably popping machine guns and missiles out of his wings a bit, but not that.

Anyway, I liked it! I was expecting something a lot more conventional than Wandavision (how could I not?), and this is very much that. And I had a great time watching it! Show managed to match the energy I liked so much about early Agents of SHIELD.

"He" debuts at the beginning of Civil War, when Falcon manually guides the drone beneath the assault truck's undercarriage and tracks it. Later he calls it by name to Nat and jokingly asks that she thank it for its support (right around the same time Cap is fighting for his life against Crossbones and the building gets blown up.)

Really enjoyed this as a surprisingly quiet, thoughtful reintroduction to these characters and to the state of the world post-Endgame. The fact that they didn't immediately mash Sam and Bucky together in the first episode, nor rush to bring in Zemo suggests to me that they have a solid, well-formed plan as to how to spend these six episodes, and that we'll see the characters well-served by it.

Pretty exhilarating opening action sequence; I've always enjoyed Sam's aerial stunts. Seeing him hand over the shield (and especially his look of pained regret at seeing it in USAgent's hands at the end) was intriguing, and I look forward to his journey towards deciding he's the man for the job after all. Others may see his family situation as padding, but I'm always hungry for more information about these characters' lives outside of the costumes, and I ate it up. The detail that the Avengers aren't all on living on easy street by virtue of being close to Tony Stark was appreciated as well. (There was a cute Xbox ad with Anthony Mackie a couple weeks ago that mentioned his nephews for the first time, so I was pleased to see them confirmed as canon here, haha.)

I kind of winced every time Bucky's therapist called him "James," since he made a point of telling Zemo his name is Bucky when he did the same thing in Civil War. Adds an extra subtle element of tension to their relationship, which he already describes as passive-aggressive. Regardless, I'm glad to see that he still has a lot to work through psychologically, that he's not just magically fine now that the Hydra brainwashing is out of his system. I also imagine we'll get more of his thoughts about Sam being bestowed (and rejecting!) the mantle than just the smile and the "go ahead" we got in Endgame.

I recognized a few reprised musical themes from CA:TWS, so I was not surprised (nor displeased) to see that Henry Jackman had returned as composer.

Rhodey! I almost forgot he was announced to be in this. I hope we see more of him.

Looking forward to next Friday.

Why is nobody talking about the return of Batroc!

Now, admittedly, it’s been a good while since I saw the movie so o forgot who played him, but as soon as a super acrobatic French kick-boxer appeared, I realized that my wishes came true and George Batroc performed the greatest leap of all; from movies to streaming TV mini series!

I wasn't sure either since it'd been a while since I saw the movie and wasn't sure if he survived.

APPARENTLY YES HE DID

It's interesting that both of the Disney+ MCU series so far have introduced government-created forgeries of existing Avengers.

It's Marvel/Disney, they kinda can't help themselves with beating the drum of how you can't trust the government and everything can be solved by vigilantes and private industry.

It was kinda weird when they started to have Emily VanCamp show up in the credits but then just cut away because she wasn’t actually in the episode. Why even have the picture? I assume she’ll be third billed whenever she shows up but maybe not and there was some mysterious purpose to the choice...

Eh, I noticed that too but I didn't really mind. It's a poorly kept secret she'll be in the show, and they probably just didn't want to radically edit the credits sequence for every episode.

She's been in the trailers and the promotion for the series. How is it a secret, "poorly kept" or otherwise?
