I was pretty spiffed by the trailer, Original Character Do Not Steal and all, until I literally went "OH COME ON!" at the sudden reveal of Weiss at the end.
Please. Squex.
Let Dirge of Cerberus die.
i beg u
There are lowkey Advent Children, Dirge of Cerebrus, and Crisis Core references sprinkled all throughout FF7R. They're mostly on the level of easter eggs (until the very end), but they're there and I love them.
Lotta people have very little patience and love for the Compliation of FF7, and I think that's a pretty understandable pov. But in my old age I'm remembering a lot of it pretty fondly. I'm glad they keep sneaking stuff like this into the game, because it validates a little those other entries to the franchise. Especially given the themes of FF7R. Where you can, if you want to, assume
that the Complication of FF7 is not direct sequels/prequels to FF7, but is either happening in a parallel elseworld, and/or happened in a follow up rebirth cycle.
Ever Crisis seems incredibly ambitious for a mobile-first game. But goddaaaaamn do I love those cute chibi higher-resolution character models.
Advent Children had a lot of neat ideas, and I'm excited to see what it would be like to flesh that story out a little more in game form, versus making a film chiefly concerned with action sequences and fanservice. Crisis Core was actually a really good game, that was limited both by the system limitations of the PSP, as well as being trapped on a dying system nobody played. And I actually really liked Dirge of Cererbrus when I played it, but that game was bogged down by uninteresting and bad gameplay mechanics. And Before Crisis is a great idea with an interesting story, but was a shitty game stuck in Japan on a bad platform. (Antiquated Japanese flip phones.) Laundering the Complication of FF through a project like this, and giving everything a classic presentation and gameplay could actually be amazing. I think as long as they keep a lot of the gameplay systems intact from FF7 without dumbing it down too much, this has the potential to be something really special.
But like always, I find myself wishing it was FF8 getting this remake treatment. Imagine how good FF8 would look, if remade like this.
I also actually think this will be relatively not as expensive as it seems. The brief glimpses of combat looks like they're just stealing/reusing assets from FF7R. Which just means remaking the backgrounds and characters for the non-combat sections of the game, which doesn't have to be glitzy and expensive the way they're handling it. Also if it's just a text-only thing without any voice acting, then it becomes even cheaper. Since voice acting is probably where most of the budget of mobile games like Mobius FF went to.
