I don't really know what constitutes a "gimmick" for a series where each and every character is highly specialized and anchored through their individual mechanics and concepts. Everyone's distinct and fun to learn the nuances of. The big thing with Duodecim wasn't only the substantial newcomers, but how all members of the roster were subject to major changes and additions in their movelists and properties. It's a really terrific follow-up in that regard.

Couldn't find a thread for the FFVII Remake, so:

It steadily dawned on me as I watched that this was a parallel sidestory rather than a sequel (unless Sector 7 wasn't pancaked by the pizza this time around? I dunno, I've only made it out of the Sewers so far). But I was pretty spiffed by the trailer, Original Character Do Not Steal and all, until I literally went "OH COME ON!" at the sudden reveal of Weiss at the end.

Please. Squex.

Let Dirge of Cerberus die.

EDIT: There's also an episodic mobile game covering the entire timeline, apparently:

I've been having so much trouble with the Remake's combat system, "de-making" it back to turn-based may make it much more manageable?

Ever Crisis seems incredibly ambitious for a mobile-first game. But goddaaaaamn do I love those cute chibi higher-resolution character models.

Nomuuuuurrrrrraaaaaaaaaaa~!

More seriously, I'm guessing this is just an extra bit stapled to a generational upgrade to VII Remake?

That mobile game looks neat but I've no doubt there is no way it's gonna run on my phone. Maybe if I'm lucky it'll get a Switch port like the FF15 one did.

Just like it happened to The After Years on Wii!

Replaying FFV right now, and guys? I think Faris may be gaming's first enby character? Even if that's not how they were intended, that's certainly how they come off.

Which version are you playing? Is it something that depends on the script/localization, or would it be evident regardless of it?

I feel like Noah/Lutz/Rune from Phantasy Star beat Faris to the punch on that, but it was muddied a bit by localization choices

Here's the full list of features:

Yyyyep, putting my Remake playthrough on hold until I get it on PS5. Photo Mode alone is worth the wait for me. (And maybe they'll have rebalanced Hell House by then.)
One little clarification is that it's 4k -or- 60fps which honestly isn't a huge deal but worth noting.

I wish it were easier to get hold of a PS5 though, holy crap. There's finally gonna be enough of what I want on it to be worth getting.

Not sure. I'm playing a [redacted] version of the game, as I do not have the patience for the PS1 version these days, and the GBA version changes too much.

There are lowkey Advent Children, Dirge of Cerebrus, and Crisis Core references sprinkled all throughout FF7R. They're mostly on the level of easter eggs (until the very end), but they're there and I love them.

Lotta people have very little patience and love for the Compliation of FF7, and I think that's a pretty understandable pov. But in my old age I'm remembering a lot of it pretty fondly. I'm glad they keep sneaking stuff like this into the game, because it validates a little those other entries to the franchise. Especially given the themes of FF7R. Where you can, if you want to, assume that the Complication of FF7 is not direct sequels/prequels to FF7, but is either happening in a parallel elseworld, and/or happened in a follow up rebirth cycle.

Advent Children had a lot of neat ideas, and I'm excited to see what it would be like to flesh that story out a little more in game form, versus making a film chiefly concerned with action sequences and fanservice. Crisis Core was actually a really good game, that was limited both by the system limitations of the PSP, as well as being trapped on a dying system nobody played. And I actually really liked Dirge of Cererbrus when I played it, but that game was bogged down by uninteresting and bad gameplay mechanics. And Before Crisis is a great idea with an interesting story, but was a shitty game stuck in Japan on a bad platform. (Antiquated Japanese flip phones.) Laundering the Complication of FF through a project like this, and giving everything a classic presentation and gameplay could actually be amazing. I think as long as they keep a lot of the gameplay systems intact from FF7 without dumbing it down too much, this has the potential to be something really special.

But like always, I find myself wishing it was FF8 getting this remake treatment. Imagine how good FF8 would look, if remade like this.

I also actually think this will be relatively not as expensive as it seems. The brief glimpses of combat looks like they're just stealing/reusing assets from FF7R. Which just means remaking the backgrounds and characters for the non-combat sections of the game, which doesn't have to be glitzy and expensive the way they're handling it. Also if it's just a text-only thing without any voice acting, then it becomes even cheaper. Since voice acting is probably where most of the budget of mobile games like Mobius FF went to.

So what's up with Ever Crisis? People seem to think it will be a more 1:1 remake of the pax ff7. I think that sounds unlikely

they think that because what we saw of it was a 1:1 remake of FF7, but as i understand it it's mostly just remaking major sequences and set pieces from FF7 and all its spinoffs

Sony just announced that FFVII R is going to be on PS+ in March. I might re-up my subscription for a month and play through it. $10 for a month long rental is a pretty good deal.

Crisis Core
Crisis... Crisis?
Advent Children or, in fact, After Crisis
Dirge of Cerberus: Dawn of Crisis
Ever Crisis

We've gone through, in alphabetical order, AC, BC, CC, DC, and now EC.

I'm now registering domains for Former Crisis, the prequel that deals with the Cetra's conflict with JENOVA.

Generational Crisis for the kids of the FF7 cast get their chance to shine

Hojos Crisis for everyone’s favourite non Mr Sinister to get his time in the spotlight

Infinite Crisis, where the heroes replaced by their more popular Earth 1 counterparts come back trying to fix things when it’s clear that the wrong universe was saved

Oh it's DEFINITELY not gonna be that. It's going to cover the entire compilation in episodic format, basically.

Also apparently PS+ VII Remake can't be upgraded to the PS5 version. So if you want to pick it up intending to do that it sounds like you'll still need to pay for the game.

It's honestly too early to say for certain either way, but I have hope it'll be more 1:1 than not. Doing things in an episodic manner makes a 1:1 a lot more feasible IMO since you can break production down into discrete units and it will alleviate the pressure of getting everything out the door at one time, so you can spend more time on individual parts of the story and make it as expansive as possible. Before Crisis was published for four years, I assume a similar scenario here, maybe even longer since the platforms are a lot more adaptable these days and a game isn't suddenly dead because that specific brand of flip-phone is no longer in vogue.

FF7R on Plus not letting you get a free upgrade to the PS5 version makes sense. And you'll still be getting the game to play for free, and it can still play on the PS5 and still look pretty damned good anyways.

I played VII Remake to completion when it came out, and afterwards immediately played it again on Hard mode and whatever else was required to attain the Platinum trophy for it. You'd think at this point I'd have had my fill--it's not even been a year--but Intergrade is still the best reason for me to eventually get a PS5, at this point. More than anything, I'm happy that we have a Yuffie gaiden with her in the starring role, which I think has been a long time coming, and hopefully raises the stock of a character who's historically been casually maligned by not insignificant portions of the audience. I want her to be an unrepentant shithead and pain in the ass as always, although it's certainly a different dynamic when the POV is turned to herself.

The Compilation nods are entertaining to me too for the same reason that they likely frustrate people who want to go on believing nothing of worth was ever created for this sub-series past 1997, and view anything done by original staff or others past that point as "fan fiction" in the derogatory sense. You can't really make anything that's fundamentally by fans, for the fans, about fans, without integrating everything that encompasses, and I've been pleased with them including as much as they can in novel ways to the story they want to tell.
