*pushes up glasses* Please. It's not a plain text list. It's a comma-separated value list!
Likely exported directly from a spreadsheet, which is not actually the worst way to manage that data.

For a flagship franchise release from an A-list developer you'd expect something a little more complicated for dictating how the game works than a plain text list.

as a person who has approximate knowledge of how the nes final fantasy games and also final fantasy 15 are held together by duct tape and prayers, i absolutely do not expect that

Yeah, no, csvs still retain a ton of use for easy exporting between different software packages that may not play nice with excel sheets or whatever. If you know what delimiters the file's going to use, it's easy as pie.

So, the pixel remasters of I - III are out on steam, right? Because I just looked, and can't find them.

Edit: Nevermind, found them.

In case it's confusing anyone else, they're out as "Final Fantasy" and so on, no "pixel remaster" in the title

Folks on Discord have made a Mystic Quest font for the trilogy, it looks so much nicer and fits the pixel graphics really well, just copy the two files into the streaming assets folder for each game. 😊 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/866169070151794718/871261506396901406/MaxiQuest.zip

Aw dang, that looks super nice. It's a shame if it's ported to Switch this won't be possible because that one aesthetic change helps so much.

I love it, it makes them feel almost like Super Nintendo remakes now, the only minor issue I've encountered in 3 is a very slight delay loading the item page, although my inventory is quite packed so it could be to do with that too lol. And yeah, it's going to be such a shame if they end up with only default fonts on consoles, hopefully they might later add in a font selector or something officially.

It seems that it doesn't change the numerals, though? How would one go about editing a .bundle file to tweak that?

Oh, thank you for linking this. Looks fantastic. Now if only they could patch the game so I don't have to change it to fullscreen and/or borderless windowed every time I boot the game! Oh well.

oh no way, they've been having trouble fixing that apparently, this version was supposed t fix it, as far as i can tell it all looks consistent on my end, has it not altered the numerals for you? This is the Resetera thread i got it from btw, I'm not actually a member of the discord itself. i really hope they fix that, it is even more bizarre when it is clearly remembering our display setting fine in the config lol. That and the slight stuttering or tearing are the main things i hope they fix, if i play on my latop screen i get terrible screen tearing even if i force V Sync in Nvidia Control Panel, but if i play plugged into my TV at 60hz i get terrible microstuttering every 4 seconds or so instead, it really is the only thing I dislike about these ports as otherwise I think they're fantastic, being able to scope out dungeons for chests with the maps is just so handy and is actually encouraging me to want to get every item and chest 😊.

That is the latest release of that fontpack I've seen. Issue is that some system level fonts for timers are packed away in other spots of the files instead of the base font bundles (why...?), so I'm not sure what's been found for that.

Ah, thanks for the info, that does seem a strange decision, although I admit I know nothing about coding lol, hopefully they'll be able to sort it out, they're making great progress already 😊.

I was acting as a middleman for Brickroad's discord, as I mentioned it there. I didn't have any of the games myself to check. I think it was due to just copying the en file and not the ja, since the numerals are only in the ja file for some reason.

I finally took the plunge and just bought the first one, and extracting both files seems to work for me.

Oh fantastic, they're definitely worth it, especially with 3 finally being available in the west in 2D, the lack of the GBA bonus stuff is a shame but I think the minimap and the redone soundtracks make up for it. I'm currently being naughty and flying the black flag with the games due to lack of funds and wanting to see if they are worth playing, but my birthday is in a couple weeks and you can bet I will be getting the full bundle with any money I get 😊. I need to get back to Brick's playthrough of 3 actually, I started the other night and fell asleep on the couch missing most of it lol.

Final Fantasy III, in this version, is excellent. The 3D remake, more and more as I play this version, is absolutely terrible. I can't even see liking that version even if you're a III veteran, similar to how the IV 3D remake was kind of "hard mode" for that game.

Meanwhile, I just got the last set of jobs in III, and my game clock isn't even at ten hours yet. I am not a III expert, so it's just that the game is breezy, fast, and is very clear about where to go next!

Mechanics question: when I unlock more summons, can both Evoker and Summoner use them? What is the functional difference between those jobs? I haven't used either, yet, but now that I have Summoner, if and when I unlock more summons, should I even bother leveling up Evoker?

FelixSH

(He/Him)
If I remember correctly, when you summon with the Evoker, you can get either an attack, or something helpful. Like, a summon might either do a group (or maybe single, not sure) attack, or a group heal for you. The Summoner always does group attacks, which are stronger than the one the Evoker gets. So, yes, Evoker and Summoner can both use all summons, but the summons do different things.

Summoners are generally stronger, and they don't have the risky part of not knowing if you attack or get helped, but there are some cases where the Evoker might be more helpful. But in general, the Summoner is just simpler, and, to me, preferable.

Not that it really matters, as you will get the final magic class very soon, which is strictly superior to the Summoner.

Kazin

(he/him)
Oh, you get more jobs after the Earth Crystal? I thought these were it haha

nosimpleway

(he/him)
Yeah, Evoker gets either a "White" or "Black" ability out of each summon, chosen at random. So Ramuh might zap enemies with lightning as his Black effect, but he might also try to paralyze all enemies as his White. "Hold" is a white spell, right?

Sometimes there's not a ton of difference between White and Black for summons. Like, Titan's Black is kicking the hell out of something, and his White is punching the hell out of something instead.

But the summoner does what you've come to expect from a post-Rydia Final Fantasy game: big blasts of mostly elemental magic against the enemy party. Compared to the attacks from the Evoker, the Summoner's are always stronger.

5 is my favorite.
I'll cop to the "Your favorite FF is the one you played when you were fifteen" cliche. I have so many fond memories of being clustered around a crappy 13" CRT in my best friend's mom's bedroom (the living room TV was off limits until the soaps ended), absolutely entranced just watching an older brother play FFIV. Well. "Final Fantasy II" as it was known back then. I wore an Onion Kid tied to my belt, as was the style at the time.

FF I was my first, but FF II/IV is my favorite, and the one where I really fell in love with the series.

Yeah, same. I also have a lot of memories of watching my mother play FFI, because she bought the game for herself, and since there was only one save on the cart I had to wait until she was done before I could play it! And it was my Nintendo!

My favourite FF is whichever one I’m actively playing, but when I’m not actively playing one, it’s one of the SNES trilogy of games
