This is one of those things that I would tell stories about for years if I were that child's teacher. She has brought joy into faculty lounges for years to come by making that mistake.

(Incidentally, Googling "unpopular cats," at least on my computer, mostly seems to give results for "unpopular takes about Cats the musical," which would make for a fascinating report in its own right.)

In my last year of school, we had to do a project. My group made a website for a sports club. Part of the project was a something like a report, I guess a sort-of pre-academic work, where we wrote about all the parts we did, including correct quoting. Part of that was a summary in English. Which was part of my work.

I didn't know "Navigation Bar" back than. In German, the word for it is "Navigationsleiste" ("Leiste" of course being the translation for "bar"). But "Leiste" is also the word for a part of the body. And I didn't look up "Navigationsleiste", only "Leiste".

Our English teacher always was so nice, to read over these summaries, correcting them, before we handed the whole thing in. When we got it back, he told me the whole teachers lounge was very amused, by my translation: "Navigation Groin".

For the record, I did find it funny, too.

Computers were both expensive and shared, so we had one for the family, in the living room so everyone could “enjoy it”. When I felt the need to see pictures like that loading one stripe at a time, it was the rare times I was home alone, and I would still hover the mouse over the minimize or close buttons on Netscape Navigator, just in case.

I kept mine in the subfolders of something other people wouldn't look at (some downloadable game I don't remember) but yep, same approach

Nah, they don’t use computers anymore, just phones and tablets. Plus no need to have a stash when it’s streaming 24/7. We’ll find out if they know about incognito mode when I go through my router traffic logs though!

Due to repeated copying of old drives as I moved up to bigger ones, I’m pretty sure I *still* have several weird nested porn folders lying around. Does seem pretty anachronistic these days, though.

Star Ocean 2 R demo is available, it's good, and cool. It has a 3 hour limit but you can skip cutscenes (or run them at 2x speed) so you don't spend half of that time limit watching Claude and Rena emote ... at each other.

I had forgotten that until you said it, but yes! There were a bunch of major .gov or .org sites that had porn .com equivalents.

I had a little tin box full of rewritten and refilled AOL disks; probably two dozen of them by the end of that era. A bunch with my own writing and files but a lot with porn...because you could only fit a few pictures on each one. My matryoshka of pornography was first video files too big to fit on a single disk, and then when I eventually got my own computer, I used it just in case someone else happened to want to use my machine. Nowadays, there's just the "Not Work Safe" directory sandwiched between folders of comic pdfs and emulators, because my laptop is mine alone and by the time Babywulf is able to find any of my porn...he'll knowingly be looking for it.

Hmm, I remember the CDs but not discs. And CD burners were way later.

I couldn't risk the 5-10min of downloading over and over again! Much faster to just have it in a folder/window. Also personally I usually just needed to look at something then close it, didn't need to keep it open or watch long videos.

Reminds me of the first time I discovered the temporary internet files folder and I was all !!!!!!!!

And when my college-aged sister came over to visit with her boyfriend I checked that folder after they had used the computer and it was now full of porn. I never told her about it. I bet she doesn't know.

My friend typing in %temp% in that search bar and it went to a weirdo folder with 20,000 .tmp files and folders with one weirdo file inside.
