The release date of Advance Wars was September 10, 2001, which naturally necessitated delays in other regions. This is simply a sign of how faithful a remake it is.

Honestly I'm just surprised it took this long for the delay. I mean, your first opponent in the first Advance Wars game is a cartoon Russian*, and they ain't fooling nobody with the Orange Star localization change for your own army.

*Okay Olaf was Blue Santa in the original Japanese version of 1 but the cartoon Russian thing is the one that stuck around for the sequels.

I genuinely don't know what I think on this one. It seems like an empty gesture, but empty gestures towards the situation in Ukraine are all the rage at the moment, I guess.

Well it would help if they had been at least a little more specific than "recent world events" imo

I kind of appreciate the honestly of their vagueness, because it's more upfront about this being purely about wanting to avoid bad press. Of course they don't want to make a more specific statement. They just want to publish this in another few months or half a year, when hopefully the people dying in wars aren't anyone the average Nintendo consumer cares about at all.

Reminds me a bit of when Sega cancelled Propeller Wings shortly after 9/11. It's doubtful that they would have released the game regardless so soon after orphaning the Dreamcast, but whatever.

I managed to find an OLED model Switch, and could justify the upgrade, so I’ve got that now. But it turns out that just moving my memory card from one console to the other doesn’t bring all my downloads with it, so I’ve got to redownload everything.

Three hours later I don’t even have half my curated list moved over

When I got a new memory card, I queued up all my downloads and let it run. I think it took over 24 hours to get everything, and I only had about 128GB to download.

Saw some footage of the 1st wave of new Mario Kart 8 course. Generally speaking, I think they all look good in motion. Especially the ninja castle one and coconut mall.

The exception being Toad Circuit. It's kind of fugly. Also, who asked for Toad Circuit? There are already three courses in the base Mario Kart 8 experience that could be described as "Toad Circuit, but better."

It's a new era of organization! Nintendo has at last entered the late 20th century of home computer operating systems!

Amelia N gave me a protip I didn't know before, if you're on the leftmost icon on the home screen you can tap left to scroll all the way over to the right

Honestly there are times when I think nintendo has a vendetta against wrapping menu-scrolling so that might be a pretty good tip after all

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you still can't do that in All Software, which could use that more than anything.

In all seriousness, I usually end up with decision paralysis when going through my stupid huge wad of games, so this update is probably gonna do wonders for actually helping me enjoy my library. hashtag the most first world of first world problems

Harvest Moon is Japan's SNES title this time so that may happen in English down the road, and does give hope for HM64 too

Earthworm Jim 2 will be a fun one to revisit.
I was a BIG fan of those games for gameplay and aesthetics back in the day but I'm not really interested in the wake of the creator's less than savoury takes on... everything. Not here to yuck anyone's yum but there are definitely things *I* often can't revisit when that happens.

I'd never heard of the other two, though I'm familiar with their forebearers. Dig Dug II looks like an interesting take and also you blow up islands which... probably bad for the environment.

I really doubt Doug Tennapel is getting rsiduals from the SNES Earthworm Jim's, if that helps.

DIg Dug II is... interesting. I have it as part of one of Namco's collection and is an entertaining puzzle game, but it is very different to the original and also more complex than its elegantly simple predecessor.

A more recent Earthworm Jim controversy would be its next title's announcement as an Intellivision Amico launch game.

That's... probably not happening at this point.

I wonder how stuff works between Nintendo and the publishers for these Switch Online games that are already available in collections. I bought the Namco OT Archives in part to get Mappy Land, but it also had Dig Dug II in it. River City Ransom and Double Dragon I and II are in the Kunio collection. Maybe they figure people will play the games, enjoy them, and buy the bigger collections, which is a good way of advertising and giving people a chance to try things out.

I'm happy to have both the Japanese and American versions of Mappy Land accessible because there are some differences between them and you can never have enough Mappy Land.

Sure fine but for me, a lot of the time I'm turned off when the art is in that particular creators "voice". I'm no shade to anyone for compartmentalizing/not minding if jerk don't get paid/other reasonable things. But the "voice" thing killed most Joss Whedon adjacent rewatches but there's still a good chance I might rewatch his Avengers movies sometime along with the rest of the Marvel films. And there are still creators whose work I enjoy who have done questionable things. But especially if it was once a voice I REALLY responded to, then returning to it knowing their crappiness makes it off-putting personally. And perhaps that comes from a place of not only betrayal but also "What does it say about ME that I responded to this", even if the work is not overtly indictive of their awfulness. Again, it's more a me thing and even then, it's not like it's absolutely consistent.
