I love Live A Live so much as an exploration of how one engine can be used to design really different games. Each story in the game finds different wrinkles in how to express the equipment system, skills, art style, ailments, enemy encounters, and dialog. The fan translation goes so far as to use a different font for every story, which serves to emphasize the differences elsewhere.

Based on the trailer, I'm assuming they're redoing the battle system, which is a relief, as it was probably the worst part of the original. I do hope that the little unique elements of each game are carried forward - I am ambivalent at best about the mild homogenization of the FF pixel remasters and would be a little disappointed to see this strange, prickly game have its edges smoothed down.

the battle system looks the same, but perhaps some aspects of it are a bit more clear

To be fair, none of the routes in Fates are well written. Conquest in particular is mind numbingly stupid.
I consider that to be a feature and not a bug

Conquest is absolutely the best route in Fates. I love being the stupidest protagonist alive bumbling through things with my equally ridiculous siblings. Every Corrin has rocks for brains and no one in any route is communicating with each other at all, but at least Conquest leans into it to an extent that becomes campy instead of just boring. Also, very fun maps!

There are a number of games in the series with great reputations I haven't played yet (the beloved GameCube entries especially stand out here), but Fates: Conquest is probably my favorite out of everything I have played.

re: Mario Kart DLC
And throwing this in as a freebie with the NSO expansion means I'll probably end up getting the NSO expansion now.

What wouldn't have been worth the extra $30 on its own will now just be a cool bonus for some DLC I was gonna pay $25 for anyway.*

Finally talked me into it, the bastards.

I just realized yesterday that they're gonna be releasing new tracks until the end of '23, not '22

I'm an idiot.

I don't have Deluxe yet, but I've been playing a lot of MK8 with a friend, so this might be the thing that puts me over the edge and finally double-dipping. I've found the course redesigns to be really slick, so I'm very intrigued to see what they come up with for the new ones.

And yeah, still not getting on that premium NSO subscription. Makes a lot more sense to just get the DLC for good. Sure would be nice if they did a big bundle with the DLC at the end of the run on cart... crap, we're going to get a "complete" edition for the Switch follow-up, aren't we?

It's having the weird effect where I've got it for the N64 and now I'm not buying the DLC I would've got anyway

I'd probably be more tempted on it if I weren't running an EverDrive on original hardware, have most of the stuff I care about, or *coughcough* find the N64 one of my least nostalgic systems. (Still a few fantastic games on there, though, no question.)

I can’t help but feels there’s a better thread to post this in, but it IS on Switch (and on sale atm) but Haven just got an update that allows for same-gender couples. Which apparently requires re-recording something like 60k lines of dialogue for each character, which is a pretty dang huge undertaking for a small studio.

That's.... That's insane. That much effort does make me want to give them some money, tho'.

That's a huge undertaking for even a massive studio like the one I work for. I can't overstate how much of an effort this would be. If that's really how they did things, I'm in awe.

lolol and of course the first comment on that article is like “seems like pandering but ok”

Pandering is good! I want more! Please, video games, pander to me!

they should do a non-pandering version that replaces both characters with bald white space marines

Oh man, that's awesome. I'm bummed though, Haven is one of very, very few games that makes me motion sick so I had to give up on it pretty quickly. But I already loved the writing enough to watch a Let's Play of the rest and highly recommend it.

Currently playing Super Mario 3D World thanks to the recent sale. I'm not totally in love with the game... on a Switch Lite, it can be hard to line up jumps, which is something that was less of an issue on 3D Land for the 3DS thanks to a lower resolution and the added depth offered by that system. What do you MEAN I missed the flagpole? I was perfectly centered on the platform next to it before I made the jump!

What I will say is that at the end of level one, Bowser rolls in on his hoopty, a big, ugly, brightly colored Cadillac that probably gets six miles to the gallon and has a "gas, grass, or ass; nobody rides for free" bumper sticker on the back. Boy, if that's not the perfect car for a guy like him. It's a real Asshole-mobile; the kind of vehicle that demands attention, whether you want to give it or not. My father drove one of these up to my brother's wedding reception, and it was a perfect fit for his personality too.

I remember playing 3D World on a big screen TV and still having a hard time lining up jumps. Must have been the camera, or because I was usually in chaotic 4-player mode. But no matter what, it's a reminder why double jumps became a thing in 3D platformers.

Another gripe was they really homogenized the characters' special powers from Super Mario 2. Peach can float! For 1/4 of a second! Toad can run one mile per hour faster than the rest! Look out, Luigi here can jump half a foot higher! It makes me wonder why they didn't just give everybody the placeholder Yoshis/Shyguys in Mario Kart.

Phantoon

Nah, they handle quite different still. I play as Peach and when I swap to somebody else I die all of the time because Peach's floating is ridiculously good at saving you from messed up jumps. Toad is a lot faster and it becomes really obvious on certain levels.

I genuinely don't know what I think on this one. It seems like an empty gesture, but empty gestures towards the situation in Ukraine are all the rage at the moment, I guess. I get that it's bad optics right now, but I feel like no one would have noticed or commented if they'd not drawn attention to it. And now that they have, at what hypothetical future point does it become okay to release this game, if it's not okay now? "All of those people died months ago, so it's okay now. Please enjoy our cartoon nazis."

Meanwhile, I'm here playing a wargame that just came out for the Nintendo Switch that's about neighbouring powers that used to be at war but have enjoyed a long peace but now there's been a sudden brutal invasion with flimsy lies used as justification.

I'd seen several people commenting on it before the announcement. Delaying the game was the right move. "Nintendo releases game that seems to be making light of the current, headline grabbing war" is an obvious clickbait article and an easy one to avoid. They can release it when that story isn't the lead headline on every newspaper every day.
