Talking Time Presents: The Top 60 Video Game Enemies Exhibit at the Valdez Museum of Video Game Box Art

Huh, for some reason I'd thought the civilization that created the Moai had died out completely, but looking it up, I was wrong. Though a combination of pre-colonization decline from deforestation and then colonial diseases evidently reduced the native population to a low of barely over a hundred people at one point in the 1800s. There's now about 3500 people who consider themselves Rapa Nui, though.

I've never played a Gradius or Gradius-adjacent game, but I was aware of the Moai heads' existence in those games, and so was not surprised by their appearance here.

Thanks for dropping some knowledge, Kirin!

Since the warp whistle in Super Mario Bros. 3 is the recorder from Zelda 1, are the hands that randomly pull you into courses in World 8 also Wallmasters? Something to think about.
Is the mushroom from a Link to the Past the same as the power-up mushroom? (Or maybe it's the 1Up mushroom. Or the mushroom from SMB 2 NA.)

A lot of Mario enemies appeared in Link's Awakening. But wasn't that all just dream? But so was SMB 2 NA.

I think you might be on to something here, Kishi. Just how far does the warp pipe go!? Does it go all the way to world 8-4?

Pure trivia: The Moai's signature ring-shaped projectiles are officially named Ion Rings (イオンリング).
I think there's a bullet soul in Aria of Sorrow that lets you shoot those. (I don't remember which one it is.)

It's the Man-Eater soul. (In both Japanese and English, the description erroneously claims it lets you shoot a Ripple Laser, which is a different ring-shaped projectile from Gradius.)

BOOS (SUPER MARIO)

#14 (108 points, nominated by Issun [4], Johnny Unusual [2], Beta Metroid [21], Rascally Badger [9])
First Appearance: Super Mario Bros. 3

The description we received was in Booish, as we always seek to provide accurate information about a particular foe at the Valdez Museum of Video Game Box Art. Unfortunately, no one on staff is fluent in Booish, and we are out of Boo Mushrooms. In light of this, we share the description as provided and will continue our efforts to provide a proper translation.

"Meow Boo Boooooooooooo *cackle*"
"Ruff Boo Boo Boo Booo Oooooooooooooo"
"XCOM"
"I boo ooooooooooooo booo boo BOO *giggle*"
"*slurp*"
"4 boo boo!"
"Ruff Boo boop boop"
"Eels HA HAHAHHAHAHAHA"
"Ack"
"Life is for chumps"

Here's what our donors had to say:
A ghost that’s scared of you! Such a simple, cute concept that makes a unique, effective enemy. I especially appreciate how games like Yoshi’s Island, Yoshi’s Story, and Super Mario 64 make you overcome their “only vulnerable when you’re looking away/they’re attacking” traits. And I love that they take a major role in the Luigi’s Mansion games, where they introduce punny names to their repertoire! ~ Beta Metroid

Boos are just the best. They work well as enemies on their own or in concert with other types, and the sheer variety we've gotten over the years, all riffing on such a simple yet effective design make them one of the most endearing and useful obstacles in the Mario series.

Also I 110% believe that Doctor Who ripped off Boos for its Weeping Angels and no amount of evidence will dissuade me.

Octopus Prime

Tiny Octo was convinced that Boos were related to Phantos in some way; between the similar names and the fact that they doggedly pursue you when you show a lack of respect for their personal boundaries

What else can I say about Boos? They have some wonderful music associated with them: the SMW Ghost House is a classic, both the Galaxy and 3D World tunes are so beautifully sad, and the main Luigi’s Mansion theme captures their mischief and menace so well.

Bigger Boo in Yoshi’s Island is a really impressive creation graphically, though it’s a total pushover. I like that Paper Mario: 1000 Year Door has an entirely optional secret Boo boss just chilling in the mid-game (the only other secret boss is very much intended as an “ultimate challenge” kind of thing, so it’s not like the game is rife with secret bosses). Boo, along with Paratroopa, is classified as a “tricky” style in Mario Tennis 64. I have no idea what makes Paratroopa tricky, but you can alter the trajectory of Boo’s shots as they travel. It’s super unfair, so naturally I loved playing as Boo as a kid.

That’s all I got, I think. Boos are great, and I probably should have ranked them even higher. It’s hard to think of more than a dozen more perfectly designed enemies.

#84 Grue (Zork) Nominated by Ixo #5

Apparently this comment has become a bit of a meme in 80s video game circles, but the grue is an often referred to antagonist that seems to always be around the corner in the Zork universe looking for a tasty meal. Is it behind you now?

#219 Fake Save Point (Chrono Trigger) Nominated by WildcatJF #22

In Ozzie's palace, the "hero" and allies run into these malicious save points at a specific point, which attack the team instead of allowing them to record progress or heal. Quite dastardly!

#109 Manhack (Half-Life series) Nominated by Kzinssie #9

These small flying, gyroscopic devices are armed with rotating razor blades AND move at a rapid pace. As one might imagine, running into one of these will greatly hurt "the hero", especially since they are programmed with little self restraint.

Hi folks!

I'm pretty busy this week, so I'm going to take a SHORT break and return to this on Saturday. Got a lot going on with work and life and just need a little breather.

Thanks for understanding! Go look at Dracula's spoopy movie list and vote for elemental tracks in the interim! :)

The main reason I nominated these is that they are, on a conceptual level, extremely funny. They're just sort of horrible balls of razor blades and hate that the Combine drop in and hope for the best, they always had a sort of slapstick appeal to me.

MALBORO (FINAL FANTASY)

#13 (113 points, nominated by Lokii [5], Positronic Brain [7], Kirin [8], Dr. Nerd [11])
First Appearance: Final Fantasy II (pictured: Final Fantasy IV Advance)

Both written history and molecular genetic studies indicate that the domestic carrot has a single origin in Central Asia.[2][3] Its wild ancestors probably originated in Persia (regions of which are now Iran and Afghanistan), which remains the centre of diversity for the wild carrot Daucus carota. A naturally occurring subspecies of the wild carrot was presumably bred selectively over the centuries to reduce bitterness, increase sweetness and minimise the woody core; this process produced the familiar garden vegetable.[7][8]

A depiction labeled "garden" carrot from the Juliana Anicia Codex, a 6th-century AD Constantinopolitan copy of Dioscorides' 1st-century Greek pharmacopoeia. The facing page states that "the root can be cooked and eaten."[9]

When they were first cultivated, carrots were grown for their aromatic leaves and seeds rather than their roots. Carrot seeds have been found in Switzerland and Southern Germany dating back to 2000–3000 BC.[10] Some close relatives of the carrot are still grown for their leaves and seeds, such as parsley, cilantro, coriander, fennel, anise, dill and cumin. The first mention of the root in classical sources is from the 1st century AD;[11] the Romans ate a root vegetable called pastinaca,[12] which may have been either the carrot or the closely related parsnip.[13][14]

The plant is depicted and described in the Eastern Roman Juliana Anicia Codex, a 6th-century AD Constantinopolitan copy of the Greek physician Dioscorides' 1st-century pharmacopoeia of herbs and medicines, De Materia Medica. Three different types of carrots are depicted, and the text states that "the root can be cooked and eaten".[15]

The plant was introduced into Spain by the Moors in the 8th century.[16] In the 10th century, roots from West Asia, India and Europe were purple.[17] The modern carrot originated in Afghanistan at about this time.[11] The 11th-century Jewish scholar Simeon Seth describes both red and yellow carrots,[18] as does the 12th-century Arab-Andalusian agriculturist, Ibn al-'Awwam.[19] Cultivated carrots appeared in China in the 14th century, and in Japan in the 18th century.[11]

There are many claims that Dutch growers created orange carrots in the 17th century to honor the Dutch flag at the time and William of Orange.[17][20] Other authorities argue these claims lack convincing evidence.[21] Modern carrots were described at about this time by the English antiquary John Aubrey (1626–1697): "Carrots were first sown at Beckington in Somersetshire. Some very old Man there [in 1668] did remember their first bringing hither."[22] European settlers introduced the carrot to colonial America in the 17th century.[23]

Outwardly purple carrots, still orange on the inside, were sold in British stores beginning in 2002.[17]

Here's what our donors had to say:
Just the worst. What if a single enemy could do everything bad to you at anytime? So cruel, I love it. ~ Lokii
Few things are more dreadful than running into one of these and getting a full dose of Bad Breath in the face - no wonder they named a brand of cigarrettes after it ~ Positronic Brain

And I will take you somewhere
Somewhere to unwind
You're tangled up in all this shit
