Played through 64 for the first time since the '90s, probably. 105 stars--all the standard ones, not compelled to collect coins for the rest. Plays well in handheld mode for two big reasons: the primary control method being analog, which is the only configuration suited for the Joy-Con ergonomics; and the general U.I. and visual style of the game, redrawn as it is in places and upscaled, being fundamentally large, clean and legible on a smaller screen. So many ostensibly well-suited Switch releases fumble at one or either of those, but not here.

Sunshine was the main reason I got this collection. I've never played it before, but the further it strays from the Mario template, the more I expect to like it. We'll see.

Ugh, the controls aren't inverted for the cannons in Mario 64, either. Come on

So they added these little grey dots in the FLUDD-less levels of Sunshine as a sort of visual aid to see where platforms are moving that were definitely not there in the original release... Which is welcome, but why add that and not an inverted control option, too?! Baffling!

Replaying Super Mario 64. It's still super fun, although the camera and controls sure have been improved in later titles. I think the controller remapping makes sense, though, and I am looking forward to digging in more!

Does anyone know how the pins thing works? I did all the silly shit on their website last week and just registered my physical copy for the My Nintendo gold points... do I have to do anything else? Is that all?

I think you'll need to go back in to the Mario site to "earn" them...

It's saying it could take 48 hours for your coins to process for that mission to complete.

Mario Sunshine is great and everybody go read Loki's post if you haven't already.

Currently at 40 shines and zero blue coins collected. Planning on using a FAQ to 100% the game :)

22 stars in SM64. While Mario is a little more slippery than I remember (might be due to the N64 stick and the Switch analog being quite different in feel), I'm beginning to get back into the groove.

Is Mario 64 the original, or the Ds remake? Reading the comments makes me guess the former, and I don't have a switch anyway, but I'm curious.

Not the original N64 version, but a later N64 version that adds rumble support, removes a physics bug or two, and makes some minor audio changes.

But... but Nintendo knows best!

Like last time, when it was inverted! 🤪

I am genuinely perplexed they'd go to these lengths to give you the original games as unaltered as possible, then alter one aspect of the controls and give no scope to correct it.

And credits on Mario Sunshine with 58 shines total. Corona mountain is annoying! Stupid boat. It's simple, but I actually like the final boss. Been a long, long time since I beat this. There's some super annoying shines - the last one with Yoshi in Ricco Harbor is the literal devil - but it's a fun game.

Looking forward to doing everything in it, then moving on to Galaxy, which I haven't played since 2008...

It just wouldn't be a Mario All-Stars collection if they didn't make arbitrary changes to how the games play.

I thought I would be smarter than everyone, since I've never played Sunshine and I wouldn't care that they had changed the controls. But I started spraying water and it immediately felt wrong to press up to aim higher! Why did Nintendo decide to swap the FLUDD controls?? Anyway, I've dipped my toes into each of the games and the ports seems pretty nice. The platforming in Sunshine is certainly different, but the lack of a crouch button means they've taken out the two most useful jumps in 3D Mario games and it feels like a personal affront. I got to the first FLUDD-less level and immediately lost all my lives, because the platforming feels so weird compared to 64 and Galaxy. Speaking of Galaxy, that game looks fantastic at 1080p. As a full priced game, I'd hesitate to say it's worth getting the collection for Galaxy alone...but it kinda is. God damn it, they better release Galaxy 2 eventually or I'm gonna be mad.

I haven't played Galaxy 2, but I've seen people say it involves using a pointer while also doing other things in a way Galaxy doesn't. So it may not be so easy to convert.

I thought about this for a second and the biggest difference between the games, control-wise, is the addition of Yoshi in Galaxy 2. You have to aim at the screen to grab grapple points using Yoshi's tongue, so that maybe requires a tad more precision than the stuff you do in the first game. But you still have to shoot star bits at enemies in Galaxy 1, so I don't really think it's that huge of a difference. And the option is there to play with detached Joycons, at least on the standard Switch. I could totally believe that Nintendo made their decision based on that, but I really hope it's not true.

I used the Pro Controller for the little bit that I played this morning. The gyroscope does a pretty good job of controlling the pointer, though it's definitely a bit less precise than the original Wii controls were. Then again, having spin mapped to a button is such a huge improvement that I'm not sure I'll ever go back to separate controllers...

I’ve been playing with the joycons and it feels great. Very close to the original experience. I prefer joycons over the pro controller in general tho.

So, I followed a FAQ for about half the blue coins - I was enjoying exploring the levels looking for them, until I came up against the whole "some blue coins are only available in certain instances" crap. In any case, 120 shines get. Here is your reward for getting all 120:

nXWpSTV.jpg

Blue coins aren't really a problem since your reward for getting everything is so meager. So don't worry about it! Play the levels you like and grab blue coins as you see them, but don't stress about it.

The pachinko shine still sucks, Yoshi is pretty much awful to use all the time, the rollercoaster at Pinna Park is annoying, but other than that I think the game is really fun. Now to chow down on Galaxy (I beat Mario 64 a few months back on PC so I'm not itching to play that atm)

Only if you're trying to use his abilities to actually accomplish something. My primary use for Yoshi when playing Sunshine was flutter jumping on the rooftops, eating the (respawning) fruit at the stalls, and projectile vomiting on any Piantas I didn't like.

That level where you have to vomit on fish to get to distant platforms is an absolute mess. I hate Yoshi in Sunshine.

Played a half hour of 64 just to check it out. Nabbed a few stars; like riding an old bike, it came back to me. Lots of delightful "Oh yeah, I remember this" moments.

Played a half hour of Sunshine. Nabbed two shines; threw some fruit into a basket because the lady just wouldn't accept me putting them at her feet. Got a fuckin' blue coin for my trouble. Lots of unfortunate, "Uuugggh, I remember this" moments.

Haven't booted Galaxy yet.
