I wouldn't call Mario's FLUDD-less controls better in Sunshine, they're more or less the same as they were in Mario 64. But I do agree that the real culprit is the level design, which demands a whole heck of a lot from the player than 64 ever did. I actually think the controls with FLUDD are fine and I would probably even enjoy the game if they didn't insist on taking it away from you every third level.

I think there's also the issue of being used to the more refined controls in Odyssey and Galaxy.

Oh absolutely. But in the context of the 3D All-Stars collection, where you can go back and play Mario 64 and Sunshine back to back, one of those games is more frustrating than the other to revisit. I'm not a total 64 apologist, there are parts of that game that I find punishing and frustrating to replay, but at least they don't happen as regularly as the FLUDD-less levels in Sunshine.

Having replayed Mario 64 just before playing Sunshine for the first time, I super disagree with "more or less the same." There's tons of little refinements in Mario's movement that makes it way less frustrating. For just one example, in Mario 64 when you move from a standstill, if you are changing direction, Mario will turn around in a wide arc. This often makes him run right off a ledge, and leads to lots of deaths in levels with small platforms. If you just barely flick the analogue stick, he changes direction without the arc, but it's a really precise motion. Sunshine got rid of that arc.

But I do agree that the FLUDD-less controls aren't better than 64, but not because the controls are worse - it's because they reduced Mario's moveset. The lack of long jump and backflip increases the difficulty on some of the FLUDD-less areas, in my opinion. I feel like the FLUDD serves to make the loss of those abilities less punishing, so it stands out even more when you don't have the thing.

The SMB Game & Watch is a beautiful object, and I need to find a good way to display it. I’m kind of bummed that it doesn’t have the little metal stand the old titles did. It also doesn’t seem to have an alarm. I wanted to be awakened by the tinny cry of Marios!

It also feels like an oversight that the included Game & Watch title is Ball, rather than the original G&W Super Mario Bros. That’s always been my favorite LCD game, and I wish it were included in this or in a Game & Watch Gallery game. Man, I would pay a HANDSOME PRICE for one of these with Game & Watch Gallery 4 on it.

On the other hand, there is an infinite lives cheat, which makes this one of the best ways to play Lost Levels.

The Lost Levels already has an infinite lives cheat built into the first stage.

It's funny you mentioned this because my girlfriend told me today that she was unable to beat Lost Levels even with that exploit and that she might be able to beat it now with the infinite lives option.

I wonder if they plan a series of these and later ones will have chronologically later Game and Watches? They could do a very similar package for Zelda's 35th with Flagman, for instance.

Really interesting that the art there uses the NES color schemes. Now, if only Luigi looked nigh-identical to Mario...

They didn't use the (surprisingly good) Game and Watch Super Mario Bros here, so I'd expect something of a similar vintage to Ball.

Anyone here miss out on the SMB Game and Watch?

I wasn't able to cancel some orders in time, so I've now got multiple (2 extra).

Before I return these to the store I was going to see if anyone here was interested; say for MSRP + Tax + Shipping.

Hm. That's a good question. I'm not seeing anyone freaking out about missing it. Looks like distribution was pretty good?

Yeah, after missing out on pre-orders for the PS5, a limited Lego set and that Fire Emblem collector's edition I wasn't taking any chances.

Nintendo definitely seems to have made the Game and Watch more widely available.

The infinite lives cheat for SMB was a wise idea. My daughter, who has no temperament for NES games going "lol u = teh suXX0rz" every two minutes has been getting into it as a result.

I finished Mario Galaxy for the first time! The game went down smooth. Effortlessly fun from start to end. I got just enough stars to trigger the endgame and felt like I got a great sampling of all the games main stages. The final stage was a bit of a roadblock with the lava/bullet bill gauntlet, but it's easy to see how it works as a final stage over the weirdly short and frustrating volcano from Sunshine.

Anyway I guess Mario destroyed the whole universe, and then Rosalina recreated it? Is that what I saw? That ending was nuts, man!

Well as Sev's journey describes a movement from the lowest place to the highest, it's gotta be Luigi.

I did quite enjoy the part in Galaxy where Luigi nurtured a sick Daisy by sitting by her bedside and informing her how torture is good, actually.

Do we know who Luigi’s grandma is? If not, he needs to be really careful before meeting up with any Tinder matches.

That's my understanding of it.

Back when I had ambitions of wriing a Mario comic, I was going to use that to explain some of the changes made in more recent years, like the Koopalings no longer being Bowser's children.

(Not that I have time or money to go to Japan right now anyway.)

I'm going to admit to my darkest secret. Sometimes I buy the same game for the same platform in digital and physical.

I'm not proud of this.
