There are very few characters who aren't on one side or the other. It was interesting to get a perspective that wasn't holy good guy or moustache twirling villain. He's what Han would've been if he hadn't have come back at the end of Star Wars.

After two seasons of westerns and Samurai Jack, this one was Mad Max.

Mandolorian does a good job of humanizing Stormtroopers immediately before reminding you how truly terrible every single one of them actually are.

Also, Bobas ship has a smiley face on its underside. Big fan of that.

Also, I... don’t know why Mando has a moustache. That seems like more facial hair maintenance than you’d expect from a guy who’s religion forbids him from taking off a helmet that hides his entire face

I think mainly because Pedro Pascal does, and why shave it off if he's going to wear a helmet most of the time?

Felt a lot more like Indiana Jones tbh. The battle on top of the truck was basically just an Indiana Jones scene with a palate swap. That's to say nothing about the Nazis Imperials moving in to exploit the natives of some jungle-place.

Fluffy Prince
He's Mando! He can do what he wants
I also love his deer-in-the-headlights look he gives the officer when he doesn't know what to answer. Although props to Pedro Pascal for making Mando emote even with his helmet on. It's like the art of sentai filmaking getting its long overdue recognition.

You know what. I’ve been pretty guarded and cynical of this show in general. But god damnit did the ending of this episode didn’t just slay me. Deep fakes aside, man I felt like a little kid again. What a time to be alive

Yeah, that was good. I predicted 50% of that, but it was really well done.

Really cool callback to Rogue One, as well

I enjoyed that a lot! Got a little verklempt when he took his helmet off in front of everyone. And they've improved on the deepfakes since Rogue One (what was the callback to Rogue One?).

Still not clear what Gideon needed the baby OR a clone engineer for, if he was just building fancy battle droids. Hope they don't just let that sit.

Also, given the post-credits scene and title card is next season focusing on Boba Fett? Or is that a new show that hadn't been teased yet?

The callback (as far as I'm concerned) is to the Darth Vader murder corridor. In both scenes you have a Skywalker coming slowly down a corridor and everyone in that corridor is facing their certain Force related death. It's just due to the nature of the Skywalker in question that the context is very different.

I'd guess it's a new show. Din's story is far from over and Boba will change it to a completely different show. Looks like he's still evil though. Also, probably for the best he wasn't on the bridge when Luke got there, would've been totes awks

The black and white feed was clever so you couldn't tell who it was. When it was a green lightsabre (and again with the gloved hand) I loudly said "oh shit"

I thought the fake Luke looked bad, honestly. And I thought Bo-Katan had gotten past needing to prove herself by earning the Darksaber in Rebels, but this is more dramatic I guess.

Still, enjoyed watching this.

It's easy to forget, but it's a TV budget and they've never pulled this off in a movie either. If it's a choice between recast or CGI, it's CGI every time for me. And Bo-Katan lost the Darksaber and therefore isn't eligible without proving herself again. And I don't believe she exactly won it the other time either.

I know it's hard but this just points to maybe they could have done this same story without it being Luke, and if they had gone that way they could have made it a better scene. We only accept it as is because we as the audience know who Luke is.

The fact that we already went through this with Bo-Katan having to accept receiving the darksaber without winning it in a fight is what makes it tiresome.

I mean, we did, but probably ~2/3 of the people watching this show? Did not. I only saw Rebels, not CW, so a lot of this Mandalorian stuff is fairly new to me. This is Disney+'s big-tent show, and it's hitting ALL the buttons for people who are familiar with Star Wars to any extent. Luke's for the people who've mostly seen the movies. Ahsoka is for Rebels and CW fans, along with Bo-Katan. Dark Troopers are very specifically for people who have played some decades-old computer games. Boba Fett's for almost everyone.

I don't understand this argument. Bo-Katan's arc means nothing to people who haven't watched Clone Wars and Rebels. To people who have, it's repeating itself.

I can't disagree with this more strongly. It's Luke Skywalker. Who on earth could match the impact of that? And he's the only character who makes actual sense turning up. It's a huge, barely repeatable event. You're getting hung up on the fact that it looks a bit janky because Hamill has aged. Swap Ezra in and one, it doesn't work, and two, who?

Luke. Skywalker.

Edit: I need to actually watch The Clone Wars so I may be miles off, but I get the impression that Bo-Katan was a bit of a shit. So the story isn't "can she get this not actually important MacGuffin back", or "can she grow beyond her old behaviour"

Yeah cool we all love things we've seen before. Why develop the story when you can just give us the man we like

These two essays both mirror my thoughts on why Luke showing up didn't work for me.

Ok then. Give me somebody that shows up that isn't a disappointing deus ex machina. It's not "look at thing you remember" it's "what does this mean for the larger story"

Edit: we know Luke can be trusted, a made up Jedi can't. We know everything goes belly up in 20-odd years, does Grogu die then? If not, where is he in the sequels? Might he continue the Jedi? Does Din get him back before the temple is destroyed? Everything about this is bittersweet.

This is literally my point he just shows up out of nowhere and the only reason you don't look at it as a deus ex machina is because it's Luke Skywalker
