There's also a part near the end of the original series where someone tells Shinji they love him, which is important because no one else has ever said that to him and it makes the next episode hit much harder. While in the Netflix translation it's like, not love and causes Shinji to say he was "worthy of their Grace" which is uhh..
Also "I'm so fucked up" sounds more natural than "I'm the lowest of the low".

I keep erasing "lowest of the low" from my mind. Probably more accurate to the Japanese phrasing, but certainly not how you'd say it in English to get the point across.
I think this scene is a great example of how both translations have major issues.
The 90s translation is just incorrect, while the recent translation better matches the ambiguity of the dialogue in the original text but also sounds like it's not written by a human being.
It's a very hard scene to translate, and so it's also one where the flaws of both approaches really stand out.

(J/K. But then, I'm a steadfast proponent of getting meaning and nuance across even if it's not a literal translation, especially in scenarios as sensitive to context and interlocutors like this one.)
I think the thing about the "You are worthy of my grace" line is that for as much as it became a meme it's honestly much closer to how the line should feel, and honestly I think that's the right general approach to take. It's a bizarre thing to say in Japanese, too. But it also feels like it needs a few more revisions to get where it wants to be going with that approach.
I think I would want to say something like "worthy of affection," maybe, which I think better walks the tightrope of tension in that scene.
edit: lol i was googling to see various translations of the line and it looks like netflix actually changed the subtitles to "affection" at some point, honestly it's just the better translation of that scene now
lol Shinji is a rather naïve, Japanese 14yo. Having him drop F-bombs was always a bad translation and a product of the era of translation the original dub was in that we're all better off for having left behind.

I mean that was the part of the series I heard about the most concerning the new dub, and I was curious about it, but when I got to it I was all, that's it? People kept arguing "they completely changed the meaning of the scenes!", which you might have a point, if you completely ignore the animation, acting and direction of the episode entirely. I was not at a loss to understand what was going on there.
Again, the contention you see is not "I prefer this or that translation", it's that the Netflix sub/dub is unwatchable dreck. Feel comfortable filing this one under "not weeb enough to care"

A funny thing is that there is so much Eva merch that there is also a totally separate line of Eva underwear aimed at gay guys who are having sex, made in collaboration with Japan's trendy gay underwear brand TOOT:
TIL that there's a brand of underpants called "Toot" and now I can ascend to Nirvana
The name is extra funny because it's aimed at Scene Gays, so almost all of the marketing is guys with perfect bodies and usually half of their ass out and/or a semi-transparent bulge area making Blue Steel "let's fuck" faces, in underwear that says TOOT.

Dub thoughts -
Tiffany Grant revealed they recorded this film in Dec, ahead of the other Amazon Rebuild re-dubs.
* Ritsuko's performance is fine but she does not sound like Ritsuko at all. This is a little frustrating as she's had many actors over the years and they all end up sounding like Ritsuko until now : /
* Fuyutsuki did not study up on his character ahead of time. It's all wrong (very sad step down from funimation's old and tired 3.33 version)
* New Mari is perfectly fine but still pales against previous Mari
* there is a closed captioning track that matches the dub, so if you watch things w/ words onscreen you don't have to deal with a subtitle track that says entirely different words than the ones you are hearing! This is wonderful!
* oh and this new director seems fine with lips that move but don't have sound coming out - sort of offputting
* sometimes he also has characters pause unnaturally so that they do match the flaps..
* pick a damn lane
