Also, the movie opened on Monday, you gave 'em one day to go to theaters and see it
Is that the Japanese standard release policy? Over here theaters premiere Thursday and have official Friday releases, but I dunno elsewhere. Monday seems like an awkward day to release a movie.

That said, my understanding is it's only Monday because they wanted it released as soon as the state of emergency was lifted* but Sunday wouldn't make sense.

* in the end it was not lifted on the 7th but they released anyway.

Real talk though, and I mean actual major spoilers based on actual impressions that seem to be accurate, so if you care about being surprised three years from now when this is available internationally please don't read:
It sounds fine! For better or worse it does take a cue from the comics in that it has the characters actually interacting and makes the parallels between Gendo:Yui::Kaworu:Shinji really explicit instead of just letting the viewer put that together.

And now massive, massive spoilers, like for the actual ending and stuff of this project that's been running for 15 years, which I'm putting under a separate bar:


I am intrigued by what will happen with the franchise going forward: By elaborating on the multiverse stuff from previous spinoffs they gave themselves an out to continue to produce Evangelion projects, and obviously folks got bills to pay, but if we're going to continue to treat Evangelion as Anno working through his issues it feels like ending this movie series that's been running since 2007 or whenever with the message that the only for anyone to be happy is to live in a world without Evangelion is very....
 
Two new official videos with a lot of new scenes and images that were not in trailers. People are complaining about spoilers but I feel like it's not really a problem unless you're like pausing it to go frame by frame and/or have already read a summary so you understand why the spoilers are spoilers. On the other hand, I'm extremely not spoiler sensitive and that's basically always how I feel about ads with ostensible spoilers in them though, so view at your own risk, I guess.



edit: Oh, also, this is thoughtful Japanese language review. I'm not going to translate or summarize it (maybe later if I have time and feel like it, but I don't anticipate those two conditions being met anytime soon), but this is a forum full of nerds, so just posting for other people who can read it or who can't but are interested enough to read a machine translation.

While it is true that the lack of context means people aren't going to fully understand the specifics of what's going on in those trailers, those are some BIGGO SPOILERS. I am not particularly sensitive to spoilers for most things because I just don't care about most things like that. But there are definitely times I have appreciated the experience of going into things blind, or looked back and wished I'd gone into a thing blind to get the full effect. So if you care about that mentality and/or care about Eva, I highly recommend not clicking on those videos. There's a lot of stuff happening in them that I assume would have a better impact if you aren't spending the entire film waiting for them to happen or with those images in the back of your mind constantly. I appreciate the linking to them, but definitely a situation of clicker beware.

Aah, i want to watch this movie. I love Anno's imagery. One of these days it would be nice to watch Anno's live action movies outside of Godzilla. They seem to have very nice images.

Ah, i also think Evangelion 3.0 is the best of the first three. I like Eva best when you don't understand what is going on (at least i didn't when i was watching 3.0). I've always felt empathy for Shinji, and when i don't understand what is going on, i understand more Shinji's reaction to this weird, alienating world. I always felt the unconclusive nature of the worldbuilding was intentional: it reflects more the mind of a depressed Shinji than a cohesive, explained world.

That is, i hope Eva 4.0 is nuts and doesn't explain too much.

Even if you don't end up liking it as a movie, it's an interesting relic for anyone interested in Japanese film because it features director Iwai Shunji (All About Lily Chou-Chou, Swallowtail Butterfly) in a lead role.

From Shunji Iwai, I've only seen All About Lily Chou-Chou and Hana & Alice. I liked them both! And now i know he's a cutie, because i've seen Shiki-Jitsu yesterday.

I liked it a lot too! It's very much an Anno movie - it has depressed characters, a feeling of strangeness in relation to the world, monologues, etc. Well acted, some very beautiful shots. I teared up a little at the end.

Let's see if i have something more to say... The pillow shots felt shorter than usual to me, which just added to the feeling of disconnection. A LOT of cute shots of *googles* Ayako Fujitani. The view on sexuality of the main characters here feels different than in Eva, too - for the "director", it's more an encouragement to connect with another person, and for "the girl", just another untrustworthy aspect of a relationship. That's how i read it, anyway.

I'm still thinking about Shiki-Jitsu, so i was reading stuff about it online, and learned that apparently Anno is an actor in a Shunji Iwai movie from last year. He also appeared in the excellent Taste Of Tea (which i highly recommend to everyone).

I was also listening to the Shiki-Jitsu soundtrack on youtube and i was reminded by how much some frames of this movie are beautiful.

I like Anno a lot, but one thing that I bet helps with this depiction of gender and sexuality in Shikijitsu is that it was an adaptation of a work of fiction written by the lead actress, not something by Anno himself.

Yeah, i enjoyed it! The whole "character is stuck in daily rituals so she can forget everything and mindlessly hope things get better" struck a chord with me.

About the fantasy of a manic pixie dream girl thing... Hmmm... It didn't feel like that to me. The movie has a beautiful romance, it is a movie about two very handsome people (and a great one at that!) and the focus of the camera is definitely on the unnamed girl, but i don't think any of this is for fantasy purposes. It felt more like a tug to come back to the real world, just like the scenes of cuddling. A lot of those scenes are from the viewpoint of the "director", making his movie, so it has a narrative purpose, both for "director" and for us, since we're trying to understand her too. And the director constantly thinks if he's up to the challenge of having a relationship with a suicidal person, so, yeah... i didn't read it like a personal fantasy. But it could be read like that, i think.

Anyway... Just wanted to think aloud about the movie, hahaha. One more Anno movie about depressed people that come about a personal discovery in the end.

I think the biggest factor is that the 90s release made more of an effort to naturalize some of the language, to the extent that certain scenes are more like an adaptation of the original work than a translation. Whether or not you want something like this is both an aesthetic preference and a question of your whole idea of what a translation should be doing, and it's reasonable to disagree. Personally, I think that the 90s translation is too loose and the recent translation is too literal minded, so I don't really have a strong preference. But also, striking that balance is really difficult, and I don't think either approach is way off the mark. Neither are really exceptional as translations, but both are perfectly functional and basically about average for anime translation standards.

But ALSO! In my opinion as the founder of the Atlus school of Localization...

The sins of "Netflix script" which apparently dates back to forever can be summed up with two decisions.
1) Pronouncing NERV the German way which I'll call "Naerv"
2) Retaining the Mangled Janglish of "First Children" as in "They think Shinji is so great because he's the First Children but since I'm just the THIRD Children I have to play backup. This sucks!"

On a basic level these two are contradictory decisions. One says NERV, a multi-national organization would stick to poorly worded terms that sound cool in Japanese but make no sense in their native language (First Children). The other says NERV, a multi-national organization would enforce source language pronunciations even when the language-specific phoneme is alien to the speaker (Naerv).

So which approach do you pick?

For my money you pick neither - they both suck. And the fact they're both present suggests someone in the chain feels natural sounding English is inferior to other languages.

If I were assembling a perfect dub of Eva, we'd obviously use "First Child" "Second Child" etc. It's grammatically correct. I do not believe NERV as an organization would knowingly create a plural-reading term for a singular person. But I would also stick to the English pronounciation of NERV for two reasons:
1) In the Japanese they are not saying Naerv. They are approximating "nerve" in Japanese.
2) Americans do not say Toyota, Honda, Nintendo, etc. correctly. They're all CLOSE - they're easy to approximate between the two. But even marketing for those companies in America, and American employees of those companies, say them "wrong".

In "my" dub, Asuka would be the only person who said it Naerv. Because it makes sense.

And people would still hate it - because fans.

So go with everything estragon said instead.
