I hope the people who put the effort into those Discovery Tour modes that eventually get added to the newer AssCreed games are treated well by the company, especially post-calling Ubi out on its bullshit. It's nice to have this one mode that's all about learning something as a compliment and alternative to the stabby murder times Da Vinci Code nonsense.

Also I hope that none of the people who work on Discovery Tour are part of the problem in that toxic workplace.

I did a Nightmare run as Aurora. I absolutely loved the way Bloodless turned out, to an extent that now that I think of Ritual of the Night, I associate it more strongly with her than with Miriam's adventure. I don't think Aurora's mode is quite as superlative but it makes a very strong case for itself and stands tall above most other search action alternate character modes in being a considered adaptation of the base game's structure into a more freeform approach--not as boundless as Bloodless had it, but a genuine distinction from the baseline that mostly comes through Aurora's personal movement and ability kit rather than the overall path one takes through the game; navigation just feels very different with her as she can freely fly, in a manner that isn't simply repeating Bloodless's high-intensity hover game. The shared delight with both is learning the nuances of their individual movesets, which is part of why I'm now a proponent of setting the difficulty as high as it can go, because it demands internalization of all the tools available that bring out the design's best (and enjoyably awkward) qualities for me when I'm pushed into a corner, not that it's required to observe and interact with them.

You'll learn to use the invincibility frames of her leaping sword slam from a backdash for evasion, offense and navigation all at once, as it keeps her safe while inflicting the enemy with knockback and a defense debuff, while also traveling in an arc that offsets her lack of a traditional double jump when slow-ish flight won't suffice. That's just one ability out of several, with the parry counter being another that can utterly change the feel of the game and how you regard its level design obstacles and individual bosses; some remained the terrors they had been before (I would not characterize any as such on the default difficulty but Nightmare earns its denomination) while others crumpled against Aurora's personal tools. That's probably the best outcome for this update that calls back to a game that may as well command its own nostalgia at this point, in that it's able to inject yet another fresh perspective into this game that has gotten the kind of painstaking support many years after its release that most can only hope for.

I enjoyed it! Child of Light is at this point hazy in memory so I couldn't really comment in detail on the authenticity of Aurora's showing here in relation to the source material, but the writing voice and other facets of the presentation (the custom HUD is especially nice) seemed on point with what I recall of her game. The rhyming verse extending to everything about her down to menu descriptions sells the abrupt crossover nature of her scenario well in how it stands out and apart with the few interactions she gets with Bloodstained-native folk. It's also unusual in this way because bonus character modes in games like this rarely get more than a passing narrative contextualization, if that.

In Arvantville, Lindsey awaits her mark
So seething with rage at injustice done.
Having strangers do her bidding, as if a lark,
She gives out grim quests, more rewarding than fun.

Lo, without Miriam, would a child kill, instead?
Will a sweet fairy princess see murderers dead?

(most of the NPC's are not in CoL mode but I'll give you this kindness)

Not going lie, I saw this update and thought maybe Bloodstained 2 had been announced at that State of Play I missed...

I actually think it is significantly weirder

What other gaming characters of the early 2010s will they collab with next? The kid from Limbo? Elizabeth Bioshock? Flappy Bird??

Careful there. One moment you might be negotiating the rights to use Gex with Crystal Dynamics, and the next moment you'll find out that you accidentally got acquired by the Embracer Group.
