There are extremely significant differences between the "original" version of FFXV and the most recent version, and they're somewhat divisive. I'm not sure how you'd experience it though other than playing on a disc version on a console with internet access turned off to be sure to avoid auto-updates, though. Not sure if any of the disc versions come with the updates already patched in or not.

Well, on the whole it sounds like the problems with XV will be the same whichever version I get, so I'll probably just play the updated version and read about whatever the changes are after the fact. I'd just see it as the same thing as being unable to play the original version of XIV. I guess this will be a common problem for people getting into long-running game series in the future, where if they start from the beginning the last games will have changed by the time they get there. Heck, considering how long it has taken me to get this far with Final Fantasy, there might be even more games when I eventually get to XVI.

I got to try out FF15 some this weekend. I did not play very far, but was very "meh" on it, with the exception of Prompto's photos. I really didn't get very far, though. Just to the boat dock and then back to Hammerhead.
My question is: Is this a FF13 situation where it gets good further along?
If you are on the fence, please abandon the side quests until you get past chapter 3 at the very least. Chapter 3 is where the world mostly opens up, and you can get sucked into an abyss of sidequests from which there is no return. The main story is more interesting than any of the side stuff.

It's definitely going to come down to how you define your commitment to playing the "original" versions and the issue of what that might even mean in the era of Games As A Service. But also used PS4 discs of vanilla FFXV seem to be going for $5 or so, so it's much more accessible than the old FFIV, if you want the day of release experience.

Is there a version of FF1 that combines the quality of life improvements of the GBA-and-later versions with the toughness of the NES version?

I won't deny the sidequests are pretty meh compared to the main story, but I've done most of 'em anyway 'cuz they're basically excuses to poke around neat li'l corners of the map you may have otherwise missed.

It's more about the journey than the destination.

Re: FF15:

I never made it past Altissia. Loved the Chapter 3 stuff but once they started funneling the experience back into something more focused, I became less enthusiastic, and then finally checked out. Beautiful game with a great soundtrack, decent combat. Just don't really want to play it.

I recently figured out had to add romhacks to my SNES Mini, and have therefor added the GBA translation to the SFC Final Fantasy V, and also the Unprecedented Crisis romhack to FF4.

At first, the differences were slight, some tweaked character skills (Cecil gets low level status magic, Tellah has tier-2 magic, Rydia only gets Summons) or gameplay mechanics (equipment screen is much different, new status ailments).

Then, not terribly far into the game, one cutscene resolves itself differently.

And now I’m playing a completely new game that’s wearing FF4s clothes.

Following up on that, just reached the Moon, and what was previously a short jaunt and then an exposition dump is, instead, a vicious boss rush, starting with a rematch against all eight Fiends (with appropriate end-game level buffs), Then Golbezs Shadow Dragon, and probably then Golbez himself, but I can’t confirm that since the Dragon alone wiped me out easily.

Game didn’t have that much teeth before, just a high encounter-rate, but YEESH

Talking about FFIV, today I found that back in the 90s we were this close to having a comic book based on FFIIUS written by Kurt Busiek and with covers drawn by Mike Mignola, published by Disney.

The plot wouldn't have had anything to do with FFII, though, as Busiek didn't get a summary of the game's plot. He only got the character's names and a brief description of the characters. Busiek thought the japanese names were dumb, though, so he got permission to rename a few of them (and there was even talk of using Busiek as their in-house locator for names).

Kurt Busiek said:
I remember thinking that “Cecil” was not a heroic-sounding name, and “Cain” was possibly the worst “loyal friend” name in the history of history. And there was some weaponsmith or inventor character I renamed “Lord Blast,” in homage to Admiral Boom of the Mary Poppins stories

Yes, we were this close to Cid being cannonically* renamed to "Lord Blast".

To be fair, that particular Cid could easily have been called Lord Blast, and as far as I care that’s his actual honorific and title.

Yes, don't get me wrong, I think that name would've been awesome.

And I imagine every Cid from the series being localized as Lord Blast and I giggle.

This is the weirdest and best sentence I'll read all week. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!

my favorite part is that he correctly identified Cain as a bad name for a loyal friend, but took it in the opposite direction than the game did

Going into the comments, the most interesting part to me is that it started out being based on FF1 (meaning it was very free form and he got to make up characters), and that he lost interest in the project when he had to shift it to include the FFIV characters.

Also, now I'm imagining an alternate reality where after early success with localization (Lord Blast!) Kurt Busiek ended up with Ted Woolsey's career and we have no Astro City and I think we ended up with the better outcome in our actual reality.

Unless that world had Ted Woolsey creating a fully constructed silver age comic pastiche

In that alternate world, Ted Woolsey joined Marvel as a writer and has had a prolific career, kickstarted by one particularly celebrated graphic novel. Drawn by Alex Ross, it is the uplifting tale of a new character, Nameer, Prince of Atlantis, and looks at the legacy of the Marvel Universe from the Silver to the Modern Age through the eyes of a naive boy as he grows under the shadow of his anti-hero father, trying to reconcile his idealistic view of the world with the weight of his multiple heritages (atlantean, human, mutant). It went to win the Eisner that year, and it's considered a milestone in comics - it was reissued this year in a 25th Anniversary Hardcover. Even a quarter of a century later, fans are still in love with "Son of a Sub-Mariner"
