Incidentally, if anyone would care to post some brief instructions as to how to move around the pieces in paint.net, it would be much appreciated.
Select the layer that the piece is on, then use...Move Selection, I think it is, to drag it around. (Selecting a layer is as simple as having it highlighted, not having the checkbox marked. That's visibility.)

I don't think you can move that far. Oceans count as spaces, so either of those moves would take a couple turns.

His moves are valid. Crawling Chaos's faction ability, Flying, allows two-space movement.

And that checkbox can help you determine if you're about to move the right unit. That's why I went to the trouble of numbering them all.

Updated with MrChris's move:

periodical, feel free to move.

Sure thing! We're all learning it here, so I appreciate the sharp eye.

Not obligatory, but might be helpful to note you're using a power that breaks the basic rules the first time you do so, just to give the head's up. Like Flying, Fertility Cult, etc.

Thanks, I'll give that a try next round! I spent about half an hour trying to figure that out, but I'm kind of jetlagged at the moment, and the help file was obviously intended for people trying to use the program for artistic purposes, rather than people trying to move little cultists around the world.

Sure thing! Also, I was wondering: how should we handle die rolling during the game?

Dice roller of your choice. I prefer roll-dice-online.com, but there are others that allow you to prove your results. We're on the honor system here, so I've no preference. Just tally your dice, copy over the results, and state how many pains and kills you rolled. Like so:

6 - 5 - 4 - 5 - 3

One kill, three pains. So if we were having an actual battle, you'd remove one of your units and retreat three, and I'd do whatever you rolled to my units.

Alright I'm scared but I have an idea of what I want to do. Also I'm on my phone if someone would be so kind as to update map before they go?

I'm putting Nico to bed (in the room which houses our computer), so I don't have time to update the map. But if someone can update it for me and periodical, my move is:

Power: 6
Doom: 0
Elder Signs: 0

Action: Build Gate in Indian Ocean

Power: 3
Doom: 0
Elder Signs: 0

Whoever does this should be able to just duplicate any current Gate and move new one over there, and stick my Cultist on it.

I would, but paint.net tends to make my computer run extra slow, so I'd rather not fiddle with it more than necessary.

All right then, here we go. This covers Black Goat turn 1 and Cthulhu turn 2.

Now that I've actually read through the rules and all, I think I ended up doing something stupid my last turn. Oh well.

Eh, you could always just move your Cultist again, or a different one, or something.

A second Power if I move it again! Oh well, it'll be fine. I'll figure something out.

I wouldn't worry much about it at this stage. And remember you can Hibernate to carry over power; you don't have to spend it sub-optimally.

Yeah, Gerad's up.

I know. I've figured out how to play (...sort of) now. Rather sad I have to rely on one of you people to get six spellbooks before I can. :/

OK, I think I've mostly sorted out this paint.net stuff. It does seem to take 5-10 minutes to save the file, though.

Round 1

Yellow Sign Turn 2

Power: 7
Doom: 0
Elder Signs: 0

Action - Summon The King in Yellow in Arabia (4 power)

Power: 3
Doom: 0
Elder Signs: 0

I'd like to take the Screaming Dead spellbook, but I couldn't figure out how to get it from the spellbook file to the map file.

It does take a bit; the .psd is pretty big. Uploading takes a while too. 5-10 minutes seems like a lot, though; must be because it's Paint.net. Maybe The GIMP would be quicker?

As for the spellbook, there should be an option to "duplicate layer" in the menus somewhere, and you should be able to duplicate it to *another* file, so you'd do that from the spellbooks file to the map, and then situate it. If that doesn't work, I can update it later, but for now it's understood you have it.

I couldn't figure it out. I can duplicate The Screaming Dead within the spellbooks file using that "duplicate layer" option, or I can import all the spellbooks at once to the map file, but I can't find a way to just transfer The Screaming Dead to the map.

Round 1
Crawling Chaos Turn 2

Power: 6
Doom: 0
Elder Signs: 0

Action: Build Gate in Central America

Power: 3

It looks like it's going to take Dropbox 20 minutes to sync for me, but I'll try updating the map once it's done.

Black Goat's turn is next.

EDIT: After about 15 minutes I somehow managed to add a Gate to the map in the right location, but I have no idea how I did it; don't expect me to be able to do this a second time.

My gosh, this seems troublesome. Is it Dropbox that's causing everyone problems, or Paint.net, or both?

The latter, for me. I don't have any experience with image-fiddling software, so I don't exactly have anything to compare it to, but it hasn't been easy to use thus far. Just about every time I try to do anything, I somehow end up selecting the entire image. I'm not sure how or why this happens, so I haven't been able to figure out how to avoid it so far.

As it turns out, I mentioned the wrong tool last time. The tool you want to use is "Move Selected Pixels".

Paint.net is certainly pretty choppy; anyone want to see if the GIMP works better for them? My computer seems to be handling things better, so I'm not sure if it's a good test bed.

Here's the map reflecting MrChris's new gate.

And like a dope I forgot to add the spellbook. I'll upload the .pds with it.

The other option, I suppose, is that we update less often — maybe someone picks up every other turn, or something? The reason I wanted to spread this around is because I'm only able to do it myself at night in a pretty narrow window right now, and this keeps things moving.

EDIT: OK, it looks like you can only duplicate a layer to another document in photoshop. But a workaround for spellbooks in Paint.net would be to put a selection box around the one you want, copy it (like, ctrl+c) and paste it onto the other file. That'll create a new layer that you can situate on top of the spellbook slot.

EDIT 2: Hey, my Indian Ocean gate is gone! I think I figgered out where MrChris got his from! You CAN duplicate layers in Paint.net -- go to Layer, then to Duplicate Layer. It'll appear exactly on top of the original, so just select the new one and you should be able to move it. Paint.net is really choppy -- I find it's best if you put your pointer right on what you're going to move, for easier tracking. It might be my graphics card is more up to it, though. My computer's 7 years old, but the GPU is an Nvidia GTX 460, which still holds up pretty well.

EDIT 3: I've added a bunch of gates to the .pds and uploaded it again. I made sure to place them under all the monsters and acolytes in the layer order, so you should just be able to grab one and slide it under your acolyte no problem. They're all in a stack with mine in the Indian Ocean for now. Just run off another copy if you need one.

periodical, you're up.

And everyone, I know there's been a ton of accounts and programs and files so far, and I want to thank you for being champs about it as we work through the trouble spots. It'll make the next game much easier to execute!

I'm going to suggest one more thing: GIMP. I just tested it out, and it seems to work MUCH more smoothly than Paint.net for this big file. It also opens .psd files without needing a plugin.

Cool. The Move tool is buried in the icon menu a bit; you can push "M" to select it.

Also, when I installed it, it didn't drop a shortcut on the desktop. You can find the .exe in the program file under "bin."
