spines has it!

1. Another kidnapped girlfriend.
Even way back then it was a pretty tired trope. But hey, the fact that she can kill you at the ending if you touch her disrespectfully is cool!

2. Cut scenes! More or less!
Cinematic wipes between stages show scenes of the boss (Akuma) ordering soldiers after you and such. Akira Kurosawa films were an influence on the aesthetic.

3. Blonde to criticism.
Despite clearly taking place in Japan, both the protagonist and the girlfriend are blonde. The player character is unnamed, but the girl is "Princess Mariko". Broderbund claims it was a nod to "anime style".

4. That bird’s a bastard.
In addition to various soldiers, occasionally Akuma's pet bird comes after you. It's fast and if it hits you while you're not in fighting stance it can one-shot you.

5. A lot of very nice frames.
Rotoscoping was used to create fluid animation cycles, even though the Apple II could only do 8 frames/sec.

6. Left to right, by strides or inches.
You always progress left to right. From a standing stance you can run, in fighting stance you shuffle.

7. Dude wrote this while he was an undergrad.
Jordan Mechner developed the game over a couple years at Yale as a side project before submitting it to Broderbund.

8. One bad guy at a time, please.
The combat system is entirely one-on-one fights.

9. Kick! Punch! Dodge! Bow?
You can kick and punch at three heights; from standing stance you can bow to your opponent.
