Rumour that PS3/PSP/Vita store is to permanently close

So the rumors of the store closing is what finally gave me the push to hack a Vita. I got a second hand one for cheap to experiment (I didn't want to risk losing access to my purchased games) and a SD card adapter and I'm surprised at how easy it was - the homebrew scene has improved a lot in the last years. MInd you, the terminology and software names are still confusing as heck, but the process itself was flawless and it's nice that the modding community has finally understood friendly UIs are good. I've loaded it with all the PSP and PSX games I ripped from my collection a decade ago and, oh man, this thing is beautiful. I finlly can play Gitaroo Man and Chrono Cross in my Vita.

I'm thinking of hacking my main Vita _and_ my Vita TV - no emulators, just to install the plugins that allow the Vita to use a SD card. Having a decent storage size for cheap is a heaven sent, and I wouldn't mind having all my Vita games loaded in a console without having to back my games in my PS3 or PC.

How are you loading your games onto the new SD card? Can you somehow get them directly from the PSN store, or do you have to resort to less savory methods?

I can access and download from the store, and I load my PSP games using a FTP server. I understand you can also dump and reload card games using the same server, which is something I'm considering doing to backup my collection.

Can you still hack a Vita that has more or less kept up to date with firmware? I don't even remember when I last had to update mine, but I figure Sony would gladly lock down any homebrew attempts year after year even if they'd rather forget the platform existed.

But yeah, I already have everything I want for it, including PSP and PSX games, but having a single, large SD card hosting all my games and dashboard bubbles sounds enticing.

You can and they did. From what I’ve read hackers discovered a vulnerability in firmware 3.6x and sat on it for years until the Vita stopped receiving updates to make sure Sony wouldn’t patch it. As a result, while you can’t run homebrew in newer firmware versions, you can use the vulnerability to downgrade the firmware to a version that can.

Thank goodness they sat on it. Then again, when your press guy is referring to the game that used to be your system's killer app (gran turismo) in "why the fuck are these weirdos playing this" terms, the writing is slowly fading onto the wall.

fucking lol, I can't even download my old stuff from the Download list anymore. Bravo Sony

Gah, if I can't do this, then there would be little point in hacking my Vita. May need to look into ways to transfer my memory card games onto SD if that's the case.

People are reporting that many game patches are not working already. If you want to make sure your games are up to date do it sooner rather than later

Incredible. Good thing AC: Verdict Day has a physical release. Guess I should hack my PS3 soon.

Never purchasing another Sony product again.

I don't think this kind of thing is going to be limited to Sony, to be honest.

Is it throwing error 80029721?

I was having the same issue a couple of weeks ago. I would have expected them to have it resolved by now.

In any case, I was eventually able to get around it by enabling two-factor authentication on my PSN account, leaving my PS3 off for a day, then signing in with a "device setup password" generated at http://idp.sn/device-password. I was then able to download all of my digital purchases.

My best guess is standard auth and 2FA authenticate your digital downloads differently. They probably don't have a lot of resources devoted to legacy PSN support, so the increase in traffic after the shutdown announcement may have crushed their standard auth but spared the presumably less-used 2FA system. But who knows? It's absolutely ridiculous that they haven't said anything publicly about it yet, since it's been a problem since the beginning of April.

Is it possible to check for updates on installed games without putting the disc in, or am I stuck going through my entire collection making sure they're all up to date?

I try not to get too indignant, but this is the leading ecosystem in gaming, an absolute juggernaut in the industry. Absolutely none of this should be happening.

You're absolutely right, and the more it spreads the more my console purchases will be solely defined by "will this new Monster Hunter be at least temporarily exclusive to this Nintendo portable for local area play?"

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a company to provide you what you paid for. And even Nintendo still lets you download all your purchased software and the Skyward Sword patch app from the closed Wii Shop. That Sony can't even make sure things keep running until their own deadlines is shameful.

Yeah. Microsoft is having a lot of goodwill now, but it only takes a change of strategy for them to throw old games under the bus. And they would do it too, remember they didn't have BC plans and had to swerve after the XBOne got its cold reception.

If you really care about digital preservation, the only "safe" console is a PC. Kinda. Even if the new Windows breaks legacy support there'll be always an enthusiast working on restoring the functionality, and if your hardware breaks you can always get a new one, unlike with legacy consoles. But even then, in the long term, because of DRM schemes and companies deprecating stuff all the time, I'm afraid the only true way to preserve digital games is, unfortunately, to resort to less savory means.

Yeah, at this point, if there's ever a serious crackdown on software piracy, that's it, entire eras of video games will disappear save in the hands of private collectors.

There's a reason that if there is a GOG version on PC, I will always, always buy from there.

I'd imagine that, even if that were to happen, some brave souls would keep ROMs and ISOs squirreled away on some hard drives until the heat was off.

In anticipation of these stores shuttering, I bought a few PSone Classics including Klonoa, Tron Bonne and Spyro 1. Unfortunately I discovered after purchasing Spyro that it's only playable on PS3/PSP, but not on Vita. There doesn't seem to be any technical reason for Spyro to be unplayable on Vita, so I assume it's a publishing rights issue. Whatever the case, you should verify platform availability on any PSone Classics if playing them on the Vita is a consideration.

Also got Persona 4 Golden and Downwell, the latter of which is still on sale for $0.99 via the web-based PS Store.
