Naming comic characters on sight...

who’s this?

I mean, nobody talks much about the Street Fighter comics, with good reason, but it is pretty cool how a recent issue had Dhalsim here come out as trans.

Speaking of, argh, I hate how I'm blanking here.

I don't blame you - this is a pretty obscure and reviled character which is hard to find information about.

So you know how DC has the character Starro? Well this is similar character that is supposed to represent the specter of Communism and is named Pinko. When it takes over a character it turns their clothing pink. (I'm not sure why it's pink instead of red. Rumor has it that it was a form of protest by the comic artists.) In this image it has started taking over the Blue and Grey Ghost.

Now I have to ask - is this a comic character or fan art of Florence Welch?

Both, in a way. That’s Spectrum, the Lion-Hearted Girl. She can control cosmic forces with the power of her voice in service of her patron, the entity she calls the Queen of Peace. The artist has admitted that she was listening to a lot of Florence + the Machine when she designed her.

I always forget this character’s name. Can somebody help me out?

Jacob? Jacob Marley?

(That's the Martian Manhunter from the A Christmas Carol parody crossover when they recast the Justice League into it. Bat-Scrooge and the Ghost of SuperChristmas worked reasonably well, but Robin the Ghost Wonder was miscast and nobody knows what they were thinking with Green Fezziwick.)

This guy seems very concerned about Spectro. I wonder what he's doing about it?

I think you have misread the comic. Polka-Dot Man here said 'fortunately'. This was from when he teamed up with Spectro.

But who is this?

(he/him)
That's the Fisher King. Readers got bored with him fast because all he did was talk about how he caught one This Big.

Who's this?

Oh that's from the manga adaptation of Kamen Rider Ex-Aid, where they mixed up the formula a bit and the monsters were all representatives of major game publishers. That's Blizzard. You can really tell by the shoulders.

Anyway I THOUGHT this was Screech from Saved By the Bell but I guess not, now that I double check.

Büge

That's Batty from Ferngully. After the lukewarm box office returns, the studio commissioned Malibu Comics to do a sequel, Ferngully: Welcome to the (Concrete) Jungle. It only lasted one issue. According to rumour, Robin Williams punched a guy who tried to get him to autograph a copy.

I thought that this was how they drew Crysta for the comic, but she looks totally different. So who is this?

Wasp-90s.jpg

Felicia

Power is fleeting, love is eternal
(She/Her)
That's Eye-Boobs, an insect-themed villain who is blind in the eyes on her face, but her "breasts" are actually a pair of multifaceted insect eyes.

Who's this?

Eraserhead, whose name is inspired by the David Lynch movie but who otherwise has absolutely nothing in common with it.

Now who is this masked man with the dramatic lighting?

This non-stop barrage of remakes is getting hard to keep track of but that's Bow from SOME version of She-Ra.

Also we've all seen THIS guy plenty but I never did get a name for him come to think.

That's Docptero the Saurian Supremacist, PhD (the P stands for Pterodactyl). He's standing on the back of a Triceraton from TMNT. (Yes - yet another crossover.)

So now who's this?

Beowulf

It's Shoom. I don't see any ambiguity here.

Oh, I remember that guy! When Professor Ivo created the Red Tornado, he also created a bunch of other androids: The Red Torpedo, the Red Volcano, the Red Inferno, and this guy: The Red Contain-o. He can hold stuff.

But what about this bubbly fellow?

That's Bub. Wolverine talks about him all the freaking time.

But I don't think he ever talks about whoever this is:

Comics really need to make it clearer when they're introducing a character. It can be really hard to tell their names apart from the 'sound effects'.

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
That’s Skull Man; the evil Robot Madter built by Dr. Cossack. His Unbreakable Skull Shield can only be overcome with the power of the Dust Crusher

Which is far more than I know about this guy;

Ooh! Where did you find a scan of the ill-fated American adaptation of Captain Harlock from?

Who the hell is this though?

Octopus Prime

Mysterious Contraption
(He/Him)
That’s Lady Trongirl, from the Illfated attempt to turn all of Disneys flops into one super-team.

Cant place this guy, though;

shark.png

Olli

(he/him)
That's Jaws Jr., the adopted daughter of the original Jaws.

Does somebody know who this guy might be?

Ugh, yeah. That’s Bloodstryke. He was a dark, edgy antihero who grew progressively stronger the more he was covered in the blood of his enemies. What can I say: it was the ‘90s.

And who’s this?

DioFight.jpg

Torzelbaum

That's The Raver attacking with his signature weapon - the glow-chucks.

Now what about this fellow?

Wow, deep cut! That’s Captain Stained Glass, a villain who represented the forces of “Romish liturgical excess” in the short-lived Calvinist Comics imprint that the Orthodox Presbyterian Church published back in the ‘70s.

What about this character, though?

That's a non-human moe representation of Tetsuya Nomura's art style. It's called Jippa/Zippa (ジッパー).

Now who's this unsavory looking dude?
